Solana and XRP serve different roles, so neither is an automatic winner. Solana is a blockchain network built to run programs and general-purpose applications; SOL is its native asset. XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), whose documented features include payments, cross-currency exchange, and token issuance. The better fit depends on what you need to do—not on a simple fee figure or an assumed investment outcome.
Solana and XRP are not the same kind of thing
Solana is the network, while SOL is the asset used natively on that network. XRP is an asset; the network it belongs to is the XRP Ledger. Keeping the distinction clear matters: a comparison of Solana and XRP is really a comparison of Solana and XRPL, including their native assets and network features.

What can you use each network for?
Solana: programs and composable applications
A Solana transaction can contain one or more instructions, authorized by signatures and associated with a recent blockhash. Programs process those instructions. This design supports general-purpose applications and transactions that compose multiple on-chain actions. If an instruction fails, the transaction’s account-state changes are rolled back. Solana’s transaction documentation explains the structure and execution model.

XRPL: transfers, exchange, and tokens
The XRP Ledger processes transactions into validated ledger versions. Its documented features include XRP transfers, tokens, a decentralized exchange, and cross-currency payments. Its token documentation covers fungible trust-line tokens, Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs), and NFTs; XRPL notes that MPTs remain in active development and do not have full feature parity with trust-line tokens. See XRPL’s token documentation.

For a cross-currency payment, XRPL can find a path that exchanges the sent currency for the destination currency through available offers and liquidity. A token-to-token payment may route through XRP if that route is cheaper. A suitable path and adequate liquidity are necessary; the feature does not guarantee that every requested exchange can be completed. Details are in XRPL’s cross-currency payments documentation.
How do the fees compare?
| Fee detail | Solana | XRP Ledger |
|---|---|---|
| Published base or minimum | 5,000 lamports per signature, according to Solana’s official fee documentation checked October 4, 2026. | 10 drops (0.00001 XRP) as the current minimum standard transaction cost, according to XRPL’s official documentation checked October 4, 2026. |
| What can change the charge? | An optional priority fee, calculated from the requested compute-unit price and compute-unit limit, adds to the base fee. | Network load can raise the cost required for relay or inclusion; lower-cost transactions may be ignored or queued. |
| Where does the fee go? | The base fee is split between burning and validator reward; the priority fee goes to the validator. | The transaction cost is destroyed rather than paid to a party. |
| If a transaction fails | The fee is still charged, even though account-state changes are rolled back. | A transaction cost is destroyed if the transaction is included in a validated ledger, including some failed transactions. |
These figures are not a like-for-like USD price. Solana’s base is per signature and may be supplemented by a compute-based priority fee; XRPL’s figure is a minimum denominated in XRP that can rise with load. Asset prices also fluctuate. A valid live-dollar comparison would need the same date, transaction type, network conditions, and conversion assumptions; no such calculation is established here. See Solana’s fee structure and XRPL’s transaction-cost documentation.

What happens when a transaction fails or is confirmed?
Solana: atomic state changes, but not a free retry
Solana executes a transaction’s instructions together: if an instruction fails, the transaction’s state changes are reverted. The transaction fee is still collected. In other words, atomic execution protects against partial state changes; it does not make a failed transaction cost-free. Solana’s transaction documentation and fee documentation describe these mechanics.

An initial server response can be provisional rather than a final result. XRPL advises applications to determine success from validated ledger results, not provisional API responses. A transaction cost is destroyed when a transaction is included in a validated ledger, even for some transactions that fail. See XRPL’s consensus-structure documentation and transaction-cost documentation.

What risks and trade-offs should you consider?
Consensus assumptions differ
XRPL documentation describes validators proposing transaction sets and each server evaluating proposals from its chosen trusted validators, called a Unique Node List (UNL). A ledger is validated when a supermajority agrees on the resulting ledger hash. The documentation characterizes this as a trust-based protocol and notes that certain validator-fault conditions can halt progress. It also states: “Confirming transactions does not require wasteful or competitive use of resources, unlike most other blockchain systems.” That is XRPL documentation’s characterization of its protocol, not a neutral comparative measurement. See XRPL’s consensus protocol documentation.
This comparison does not establish that either network is categorically safer. The consensus assumptions differ, and a deep technical comparison of Solana’s consensus design requires evidence beyond the protocol details summarized here.

Fees, execution, and software create practical risks
- Fees can vary with network load and transaction parameters; on Solana, an unnecessarily high requested compute-unit limit can raise the priority-fee calculation.
- Transactions may fail, and failure does not necessarily prevent a fee from being charged or destroyed.
- Using a wallet or self-custody device requires compatible software and careful key management. Ledger’s supported-assets page lists both SOL and XRP, but support depends on the specific device, wallet application, and feature; check current compatibility before relying on it. Ledger’s supported-assets list is one reference.
Network mechanics alone do not resolve market volatility, regulation, exchange or custody exposure, smart-contract risk, counterparty risk, or investment returns.
Which one fits your needs?
| If your priority is… | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Building or using general-purpose applications | Solana’s program-and-instruction model and the applications you intend to use. |
| Payments, cross-currency exchange, or token issuance | XRPL’s payment paths, available liquidity, and the token features relevant to your use case. |
| Comparing transaction costs | The exact transaction, signature count or compute settings where relevant, current network load, and asset conversion rate—not just published minimums. |
| Holding assets through a hardware wallet | Whether the exact device and wallet application support the asset and features you need, plus your own key-management practices. |
These are differences in network capabilities, not evidence that SOL or XRP is likely to outperform financially. The protocol documentation does not establish investment merit or comparative returns.
