Solana Token-2022 Confidential Balances can hide token transfer amounts and balances from public observers, but they are not anonymous—and their proof-verification dependency can be disabled by a network feature gate. That creates a practical trade-off: privacy comes with extra computation, larger transactions, integration limits, and a risk that confidential operations may temporarily become unavailable.
What is private—and what remains visible?
Solana Foundation documentation describes Confidential Balances as a Token-2022 extension for transferring tokens without revealing the transfer amount. Its privacy boundary is specific: only transfer amounts and token balances are private; token account addresses remain public. Confidentiality should not be confused with anonymity or untraceability.

A mint can also configure an auditor public key. The holder of the corresponding secret key can read transfer amounts, so the privacy model may include an auditor as well as the sender and recipient. Whether a particular token offers this feature, how it handles auditor visibility, and which accounts may use it depend on the mint’s configuration and implementation. The extension should not be assumed to work with every token or stablecoin.

Confidential operations rely on an on-chain zero-knowledge proof program to verify proofs. Agave’s feature-set source includes feature gates named disable_zk_elgamal_proof_program and reenable_zk_elgamal_proof_program (Agave feature set). These are network-level feature mechanisms, not switches an individual holder can flip.

A technical account by xroot.dev reports that a flaw in the verifier’s Fiat–Shamir transcript was identified in June 2025, followed by activation of the disable gate on June 19, 2025 (epoch 805, slot 347,760,000). The same account reports re-enablement on June 4, 2026 (epoch 982, slot 424,224,000), and a Token-2022 redeployment later that month. These dates and events are reported by that account; they are not independently confirmed here by a direct chain query. As of October 5, 2026, this is a historical report, not a live-status check.
According to that account, during the disable interval ordinary public token balances remained usable, while confidential balances and pending deposits could not be operated on until re-enablement. In practical terms, a confidential balance could remain encrypted on-chain while proof-dependent actions—including withdrawal—were unavailable. The reported episode shows that a verifier safety measure can affect access to confidential functionality, not just the degree of privacy.

What the proof computation costs
xroot.dev’s 2026 article says the following proof-verification figures were read from Agave validator source at commit beee69b958. They are compute-unit costs for individual proof types, not total compute for a transfer and not a transaction fee.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Proof type | Reported verification cost |
|---|---|
| Batched 64-bit range proof | 111,000 compute units |
| Batched 128-bit range proof | 200,000 compute units |
| Batched 256-bit range proof | 368,000 compute units |
| Public-key validity proof | 2,600 compute units |
| Zero-ciphertext proof | 6,000 compute units |
| Ciphertext-to-ciphertext equality proof | 8,000 compute units |
| Ciphertext-to-commitment equality proof | 6,400 compute units |
| Percentage-with-cap proof for confidential fees | 6,500 compute units |
A transaction may require multiple proofs, instructions, and other work, so its total compute depends on how it is constructed. These figures do not by themselves tell you the complete compute budget or fee for a particular transfer.

Why transaction size and version matter
Proofs also take space. xroot.dev reports range-proof sizes of 672–800 bytes for proofs from 64 to 256 bits, compared with a 1,232-byte legacy transaction cap. Large proof payloads historically made it harder to fit a complete confidential transfer into a legacy transaction.
Solana’s SIMD-0385 proposal describes transaction v1 and a 4,096-byte ceiling. A separate technical analysis reports that transaction v1 activated on mainnet on September 15, 2026; that activation date is a report, while the proposal is the primary source for the format. More capacity can ease transaction assembly, but it does not remove proof compute or guarantee that every wallet, program, or service supports the format.

Compatibility can be another cost
A downstream system that expects to inspect a plaintext transfer amount may not be able to process a confidential instruction in the same way. For example, an x402 analysis describes a verifier that expects a readable TransferChecked amount and cannot see that amount in a confidential transfer (LLM4Agents’ analysis). This is a specific integration example, not evidence that all payment systems reject confidential transfers. Before relying on one, check whether its verifier accepts confidential instructions or uses another validation path, such as an appropriate auditor-key arrangement.

- Availability: Keeping value in a public balance preserves ordinary public-token operation in the reported disable scenario. Moving it into a confidential balance adds reliance on the proof program for confidential actions.
- Privacy boundary: Confidential balances conceal amounts, not account addresses. A configured auditor key can also give its secret-key holder access to amounts.
- Engineering overhead: Proof type and width affect verification compute and payload size. Transaction construction and supported transaction formats matter too.
- Token and service support: Confirm that the specific mint enables the extension, that account approval requirements are met, and that the wallet and any payment or application integration support confidential operations. Adoption claims are time-sensitive and do not establish current support across the ecosystem.
Confidential Balances are therefore best understood as a privacy feature with explicit operational dependencies, rather than a drop-in anonymous replacement for ordinary token transfers. Whether the trade-off is worthwhile depends on which amounts you need to shield and whether you can tolerate the added proof, integration, and availability constraints.
