Treat the output as a guide to the document, not a substitute for it: open the cited passages and verify important details in context.
How to use Acrobat to understand a complex PDF
- Check whether the file is eligible. Adobe’s technical requirements, last updated September 1, 2026, list files under 100 MB and up to 600 pages. The file must not be password-protected or restricted, and PDF Portfolios are excluded. Adobe says server settings determine these limits and may change them. See Adobe’s AI Assistant technical requirements.
- Generate a first-pass outline. Open the PDF and select Generate Summary. Adobe says summaries can include section headings and summaries, with cross-references that open the corresponding document section. This is useful for finding the document’s structure before reading closely. See Adobe’s guide to generating AI summaries.
- Ask a focused follow-up. In AI Assistant, ask about one specific concept, obligation, comparison, or uncertainty. Adobe says responses include source citations; selecting a citation takes you to the relevant location in the PDF. A narrow question is easier to check against the source than a broad request to explain everything. See Adobe’s guide to using AI Assistant in Acrobat.
- Check the source before relying on the answer. Read the cited passage and its surrounding material. Pay attention to definitions, exceptions, dates, footnotes, tables, and qualifying language that a short answer may omit. Adobe recommends reviewing generated summaries against the source; citations make that review easier, but are not a guarantee that every answer is correct.
- Use PDF Spaces for related material. Adobe describes PDF Spaces as a way to add PDFs, links, or text and ask questions across their contents in one place. When an answer draws on multiple items, check which document supports each point rather than assuming the sources say the same thing.
Check language, content, and feature limits
Language requirements differ by feature
Adobe’s technical requirements page lists supported document languages for Acrobat desktop and web GenAI as English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Swedish, and Dutch. Separately, it lists the Acrobat, Reader, or Scan application-language settings required for GenAI as English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Japanese. Support for a document language does not mean every application setting or feature is supported in that language. Adobe also says AI Assistant for webpages is limited to English-language webpages. Check the current technical requirements for the feature and language you plan to use.

Prompts and selections have size limits
Adobe lists a maximum prompt or question length below 500 characters. Text selections must be below 8,000 characters and confined to a single page. If you need to explore a long passage, break the question into smaller, page-specific prompts.
Visual information needs direct inspection
Adobe says AI Assistant does not support images or complex vector graphics. If a key point appears in a scan, chart, diagram, or other visually encoded content, inspect that page directly instead of assuming the assistant has interpreted it. The documented text workflow is most useful when the information you need is expressed as readable text.
#1 Best Overall

- Edit text and images and reorder and delete pages in a PDF.
- Convert PDFs to Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files while preserving fonts, formatting, and layouts.
- Easily create, fill, and sign forms.
- Password-protect documents or redact sections of a PDF to keep sensitive information secure.
Access and usage allowances
Acrobat’s generative AI features involve cloud processing, according to Adobe’s usage policy dated April 15, 2026. The policy describes limited complimentary requests and full access through plans that include AI Assistant. For individual and team tiers that include the feature, Adobe lists 1,000 requests per user per month; throttling may apply. Enterprise access is also subject to throttling, and Adobe reserves the ability to update limits. Plan inclusion and usage terms can change, so check Adobe’s generative AI usage policy and the current plan details before choosing a plan based on expected use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When this workflow is a good fit
- Good fit: You need an outline or help locating a specific point in an eligible, text-based PDF, and you can verify the answer in the cited passage.
- Use with care: The document is in a supported language but your application setting or chosen feature may not be; confirm the separate language requirements.
- Look at the source directly: The answer depends on scanned pages, images, or complex vector graphics, or the file is protected, restricted, too large, or outside the page limit.
- For several sources: PDF Spaces can bring PDFs, links, and text into one workspace, but check the supporting source for each answer.
Adobe describes the feature as a way to understand a document’s purpose, structure, and key ideas, and its Help Center says AI Assistant answers PDF questions with source citations. Those are product descriptions, not independent measures of accuracy or time saved; no specific productivity gain is established here. The original PDF remains the authority for consequential decisions.
