How software engineer and software developer differ
In the United States, the titles are not standardized as separate occupations. O*NET lists Software Engineer and Software Developer among reported titles for the same Software Developers occupation. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) likewise describes both roles within software development, while distinguishing the broader view an engineer may take of system and software requirements.
BLS summarizes the work this way: “Software developers design computer applications or programs.” It says software engineers “take a broad view of a project’s system and software requirements, planning its scope and order of work.” That suggests a useful difference in emphasis—not a universal division of duties.
Software developer: delivering applications and features
Developer work can span the full application lifecycle: analyzing user needs, designing applications or systems, recommending upgrades, modeling and documenting software, and supporting maintenance and testing. Some developers write code directly; others work from designs or instructions. The mix depends on the employer and project.

Software engineer: considering the wider system
Where an employer uses “engineer” to indicate broader scope, the role may include system architecture, requirements, reliability, security, and coordination across teams. An engineer may also plan how work is sequenced or guide developers, QA analysts, and testers. These responsibilities are not guaranteed by the title; confirm them in the job description.
IEEE Technology Navigator notes that programming professionals may be called software developers, software engineers, or systems programmers depending on specialization, while sharing responsibility for correctness, security, and maintainability. In practice, one person can do both engineering-oriented planning and hands-on development.

Which title is better for your career?
Choose the opportunity that fits your goals and offers meaningful responsibility. A title that sounds more prestigious does not by itself indicate greater authority, better pay, or a stronger career path.
| What to compare | Engineering-leaning opportunity | Development-leaning opportunity |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | System-level requirements and decisions | Applications, features, and user needs |
| Design ownership | Architecture and broader technical design | Application or feature design and implementation |
| Typical focus | Scalability, reliability, security, and cross-team coordination | Coding, testing, maintenance, and user-facing delivery |
| Authority and seniority | Check whether the role owns decisions or directs others; the title alone does not establish this | Check ownership of product work, implementation, and delivery; the title alone does not establish this |
| Skills and qualifications | Compare stated requirements with your experience; both paths commonly rely on programming and problem-solving | Compare stated requirements with your experience; both paths commonly rely on programming and problem-solving |
| Compensation and advancement | Compare the posted pay, location, level, and promotion path | Compare the posted pay, location, level, and promotion path |
| Technologies and domain | Check the actual systems and technical decisions involved | Check the actual products, users, and implementation work involved |
For an engineering-leaning path, look for explicit ownership of architecture, system design, scalability, reliability, security, or cross-team technical decisions. For a development-leaning path, look for clear responsibility for implementation, testing, maintenance, and delivering software to users. Neither description is inherently more valuable; match the work to what you want to do next.

Do software engineers make more money?
U.S. occupational data does not establish a salary premium for the engineer title over the developer title. The BLS reported a $135,980 median annual wage for software developers in 2025; that figure is for the occupation, not a comparison between titles. Pay for a particular opening depends on factors such as level, responsibilities, location, and employer, so compare disclosed compensation for the actual roles you are considering.
What skills and education do both careers require?
The paths overlap substantially. BLS says software developers typically need a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology or a related field. It also identifies programming background, analytical ability, communication, creativity, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving as important. Employers set their own requirements, so read each posting rather than treating a degree or a title as a universal rule.
O*NET describes the occupation as: “Analyze user needs and develop software solutions, applying principles and techniques of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis.” That shared foundation helps explain why many developers and engineers perform similar work, even when their organizations choose different titles.

For the United States, the BLS projects employment of software developers, QA analysts, and testers to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, with about 106,100 openings per year across that broader group. These are projections for the combined occupational group, not guarantees for an individual, a specific title, or a particular region. They also do not show that one title will grow faster than the other.

How to compare two job postings
- Read the responsibilities first. Mark the duties involving implementation, design, architecture, testing, maintenance, reliability, security, and coordination.
- Check actual ownership. Look for who sets technical direction, makes system decisions, and is accountable for outcomes. Distinguish decision authority from participation.
- Compare the level and path. Review seniority, reporting relationships, promotion criteria, and whether the role leads toward technical leadership or deeper product implementation.
- Compare the practical terms. Evaluate stated compensation, location, required education, technologies, and domain rather than assuming they follow from the job title.
- Ask about unclear boundaries. In an interview, ask how time is split between coding, design, coordination, testing, and maintenance, and what success looks like in the first months.
