NASA’s Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) fully deployed its sail in low Earth orbit on August 29, 2024. The technology demonstration is testing whether a 12U CubeSat can deploy a large solar sail using lightweight composite booms—not proving that the spacecraft has completed every planned propulsion maneuver or can already travel to another destination.
What NASA’s ACS3 mission is testing
ACS3 is a technology demonstration focused on deployable composite booms and the large sail they support. NASA’s primary objective was to deploy the boom-and-sail system successfully from a 12U CubeSat in low Earth orbit. The mission is managed by NASA Ames Research Center; NASA Langley Research Center designed and built the composite booms and sail system. NASA’s Small Spacecraft Technology program funds and manages the mission, while its Game Changing Development program developed the boom technology. NASA’s mission overview identifies NanoAvionics as the spacecraft-bus provider and Santa Clara University’s Robotics Systems Lab as an operations-support partner.

NASA public affairs officer Arezu Sarvestani described the deployment test in an August 26, 2024 update: “One of the primary objectives of this technology demonstration is to test the expanding boom system, which has never been deployed for a solar sail on a spacecraft of this size.” The statement describes the mission’s objective, not a claim that every future use of the technology has been demonstrated.

A solar sail uses pressure from sunlight for propulsion. Photons reflecting from the sail transfer momentum to the spacecraft. This is different from a solar panel: panels generate electrical power, while the sail is intended to produce thrust. NASA made that distinction in its July 2024 ACS3 update.

In that July update, NASA said that after deployment it hoped to test propulsion and maneuverability by raising and lowering the spacecraft’s orbit. Changing the sail’s angle changes the direction of solar-radiation pressure, much as a sailboat adjusts its sail in relation to the wind. Those maneuvers were described as planned; the cited updates do not establish that they were completed or report their results. ACS3’s successful deployment is therefore an important hardware demonstration, not evidence that it has already carried out all of its proposed orbital maneuvers.
How large the sail is
NASA described ACS3’s sail in July 2024 as approximately 30 feet (9 meters) per side, with an area of about 860 square feet (80 square meters). It is supported by four deployable composite booms, each approximately 23 feet (7 meters) long, according to NASA’s ACS3 technology overview. The measurements explain how a CubeSat can carry a large deployed structure: the sail and booms are stowed for launch and then extended in orbit.

- Historical Replica: Enterprise was a 1930 yacht of the J-Class and successful defender of the 1930 America's Cup
- Quality Construction: Model built in solid basswood hull and hand stitched sails rigging

The demonstrated scale is not the limit NASA associates with the technology. NASA says the composite-boom approach could support sails up to 500 square meters (5,400 square feet); follow-on composite boom technologies in development could enable sails up to 2,000 square meters (21,500 square feet). These are prospective capacities, not the size of ACS3’s sail or results already achieved by this spacecraft.
Launch, deployment pause, and later status updates
- April 23, 2024: ACS3 launched aboard a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from Māhia, New Zealand, and was released from the rocket’s kick stage. NASA’s mission overview provides the mission details.
- August 26, 2024: NASA reported that an initial sail-unfurling attempt had paused after an onboard power monitor detected higher-than-expected motor currents. Communications, power, and attitude control were reported as normal while operators analyzed spacecraft data. NASA’s August 26 update describes the pause.
- August 29, 2024: NASA confirmed that the sail was fully deployed after a successful test of the sail-hoisting boom system. Four onboard cameras captured views of the sail and booms. NASA’s deployment announcement confirms the milestone.
- September 5, 2024: NASA said the spacecraft was slowly tumbling as expected under its planned deployment sequence, with attitude control to be re-engaged after characterization. This was a status report at that time, not a statement about the spacecraft’s present attitude. NASA’s mission update describes that phase.
- October 22, 2024: NASA said boom-performance analysis was continuing and noted that one boom had a slight bend that operators were assessing. NASA also said the deployment data was already valuable to future sail missions; the update did not describe the bend as a mission failure. NASA’s October update reports the assessment.
What ACS3’s deployment means for future spacecraft
Deploying a large sail from a CubeSat demonstrates a way to package and extend a broad structure in orbit using lightweight composite booms. That could inform future spacecraft concepts that use solar-radiation pressure for propulsion, including designs that need large sail areas without carrying a conventional propellant load for every maneuver. These are potential applications of the technology; ACS3’s deployment alone does not establish their performance, operational readiness, or suitability for a particular destination.
