LF Live: Mentorship Series is the Linux Foundation’s free virtual webinar series featuring maintainers and community leaders sharing practical knowledge about Linux kernel development and other open-source projects. You can watch past sessions through recordings and slide decks linked from the official series page, and check there for new-session registration alerts.

What the series offers

Launched as a monthly mentoring webinar series in October 2020, LF Live: Mentorship Series features topics that change from session to session. The Linux Foundation describes the format as expert knowledge paired with interactive discussion, with a primary focus on development in the Linux kernel and other open-source projects. See the official series page for its description and session listings; the launch announcement explains the original monthly format. Read the launch announcement.

It is an educational webinar series rather than a conference tied to one annual edition. Sessions are virtual and free to attend, though registration availability varies. The landing page invites visitors to subscribe for alerts when registration opens.

Who may find it useful

  • New contributors can explore how kernel and open-source projects work and learn about contributor workflows.
  • Current maintainers and community members can find sessions on project processes, maintainership and community practices.
  • Kernel and embedded engineers can choose more technically focused sessions on subsystems, tools and development workflows.

Topics and how to choose a session

The catalogue ranges from deep technical topics to broader guidance about contributing and maintaining projects. Examples include Linux kernel development and maintainership, sched_ext and scheduling, LLVM and Clang builds, livepatching, debugging, eBPF and ftrace tracing, memory management, Rust for Linux, testing with KUnit and kselftest, fuzzing, static analysis, SBOM generation, security processes, licensing, embedded Linux, Yocto and KernelCI.

To choose, consider the session’s technical depth, subsystem focus and whether it emphasizes hands-on tools or conceptual orientation. For independent study, check whether the listing includes a recording or slide deck; many past sessions link to one or both.

Who leads the sessions

Listed mentors and moderators include Linux kernel maintainers, engineers, researchers and open-source community leaders affiliated with organizations such as Arm, Meta, Inria, NVIDIA, Google, Oracle, Red Hat, SUSE, Intel and the Linux Foundation. The official page names contributors including Mark Brown, Paul E. McKenney, Julia Lawall, Jonathan Corbet, Shuah Khan, Greg Kroah-Hartman, Andrea Righi, Nathan Chancellor, Liam R. Howlett and Joel Fernandes.
