At 2 AM, start by writing down what should happen, what actually happened, and how to reproduce the difference. Then choose the tool that can expose the missing evidence: diagnostics for issues caught before execution, logs for a record of events, a debugger for live program state, a profiler for slow or resource-heavy behavior, and a test to verify the intended result.
Start with the discrepancy, not the debugger
Write one sentence for the expected behavior and one for the observed behavior. Record the exact error message, input, environment, and recent change if you have them. This turns “it’s broken” into a question you can investigate: which input, state, or step makes actual behavior diverge from expected behavior?

Microsoft’s beginner guide recommends clarifying expected and actual behavior before tracing execution. Its broader overview also treats debugging as more than attaching a debugger: code inspection, analyzers, profilers, and runtime tools all have a role. Microsoft’s debugging workflow and overview of debugging and debuggers explain the distinction.
Make the failure repeatable
Find the smallest sequence of inputs and actions that reliably produces the problem. Change one relevant variable at a time and note what alters the outcome. A stable reproduction gives you a controlled way to inspect the failure and later check whether a correction worked.

This is especially explicit in browser debugging: Microsoft Edge’s guidance begins by finding “a sequence of actions that consistently reproduce a bug.” For JavaScript, Edge’s getting-started guide and Chrome DevTools’ JavaScript guide both put reproduction before investigation.
Choose the method that answers the unknown
| What you know | First method to try | What it can reveal |
|---|---|---|
| A compiler error or clear IDE warning appears before the program runs. | Compiler or IDE diagnostics; inspect analyzer results. | Syntax, type, and other issues detectable before runtime. |
| A reproducible run produces a wrong value or takes an unexpected branch. | Set a breakpoint, step through execution, and inspect variables and the call stack. | Where runtime state or control flow departs from expectation. |
| The issue is intermittent, remote, or difficult to pause at the right moment. | Structured logs, tracepoints, exception details, or captured traces. | A record of events and context that can be reviewed without relying on one live debugging session. |
| A browser page behaves incorrectly or slowly. | Reproduce it in DevTools; inspect the script, console, network requests, and relevant performance tools. | Whether the problem relates to script execution, requests, rendering, or timing. |
| Execution is slow or uses too much memory. | A profiler or memory-analysis tool. | Which measured operation or resource use warrants investigation. |
| You need to state intended behavior or guard against a fixed defect returning. | A focused test or assertion. | Whether the expected behavior is repeatable and remains intact after a change. |
These methods can be combined. A log may narrow the relevant time window; a debugger can expose state inside it; a test can preserve the corrected behavior.
Use diagnostics for problems tools can catch before runtime
When compilation fails or an IDE flags a likely type or syntax problem, begin with the diagnostic itself. Read the full message and identify the file, location, and condition it describes before changing code. Static analysis can also surface issues without reproducing the program’s runtime path.

Do not treat a clean build as proof that behavior is correct. Diagnostics can identify only the kinds of problems their rules detect; a defect that depends on runtime input, state, or external interaction may require a different observation.
Use a debugger when live state or control flow is the missing evidence
Attach a debugger when you can reproduce the failure and need to know what the program was doing at a particular point. Set a breakpoint near where behavior seems to diverge, then inspect the relevant variables and call stack. Step through the next operations to find the first point where execution no longer matches the expected path.
In Visual Studio, a breakpoint pauses execution at a chosen line. Conditional and other breakpoint types can refine when it pauses; Microsoft’s breakpoint guide describes those options. A debugger is useful when you need to inspect execution, but it is not automatically the right first choice for an intermittent failure that disappears when paused or for a performance issue that needs measurement.
Use logs or tracepoints when the event must be captured without pausing
For a failure that occurs in a remote process, happens intermittently, or cannot conveniently be stopped, collect evidence that persists: structured logs, exception details, or traces. Include the context that distinguishes one run from another, such as relevant input, request or operation identifiers, and state changes. Avoid recording sensitive data that is not needed to diagnose the issue.
Visual Studio tracepoints can write information to the Output window without stopping execution or changing source code, according to Microsoft’s breakpoint documentation. In Python, the standard library offers different options for different situations: pdb supports conditional breakpoints, stepping, stack-frame inspection, and post-mortem debugging, while the debugging and profiling documentation covers faulthandler for emitting tracebacks on faults, timeouts, or signals. Those are Python-specific facilities, not commands that apply to every language or runtime.
For browser bugs, inspect the page’s actual execution path
First reproduce the issue in the browser’s developer tools. Use the console for errors and logged values, source debugging for JavaScript execution, network inspection for requests and responses, and performance tools when timing or rendering is in question. The aim is to distinguish a script defect from a failed request, a rendering issue, or a timing-dependent interaction before making a fix.

If the symptom is slowness, high memory use, or another resource problem, measure it rather than guessing from code appearance. A profiler or memory-analysis tool can help identify which operation or resource use deserves attention. Investigate the measured hotspot, make a focused change, and measure again under comparable conditions.

Verify the cause and keep the fix
Once you have a plausible cause, check it at the point the behavior diverges. Make a focused correction, then rerun the same reproduction or a focused test. A successful run is useful evidence only if it exercises the behavior that failed.
Tests and assertions make intended behavior explicit; a tool cannot infer what the program was supposed to do unless that intent is expressed. Preserve a regression test when practical. If a test is not feasible, keep a minimal reproducer, a useful diagnostic log, or a concise note about the root cause so the next incident starts with evidence rather than guesswork.
Quick Recap
A practical 2 AM decision sequence
- Describe the mismatch. Record expected behavior, actual behavior, the exact error, and relevant input or environment.
- Reproduce it. Find a consistent sequence and narrow it to the smallest useful case.
- Match the tool to the unknown. Start with diagnostics for pre-runtime warnings, logs for hard-to-capture events, a debugger for live state or control flow, or a profiler for measured resource cost.
- Test the suspected cause. Observe where behavior diverges, change one thing, and repeat the same check.
- Preserve evidence. Add a regression test or retain a minimal reproduction or diagnostic record.
