If the Text actions button is missing in Snipping Tool, first take a new screenshot and open it in Snipping Tool. Then check for app updates, restart Windows, and try the app’s Repair option; use Reset only if needed. Microsoft explains what Text actions does, but does not publish a universal cause or guaranteed fix for a missing button.
What Text actions does—and where to find it
Text actions is Snipping Tool’s optical character recognition (OCR) control. After you capture and open a snip, it can detect text in the image so you can copy it, and it offers quick redaction for email addresses and phone numbers. Microsoft says recognition runs locally on your device. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

To check the right place, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, capture a new area, and open the resulting capture in Snipping Tool. The feature is associated with an opened capture, not simply the initial screen or a different image viewer. If you are looking at an old screenshot, make a fresh snip before troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTry these fixes in order
1. Update Snipping Tool, then restart
- Open the app-update route available on your PC and check for updates to Snipping Tool.
- Close Snipping Tool and reopen it. Capture a new snip and check whether Text actions appears.
- If it is still missing, restart Windows and check again.
Microsoft recommends checking for updates and restarting as general update troubleshooting, but does not say these steps specifically restore Text actions. See Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guidance.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
2. Repair the app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select Snipping Tool > Advanced options. If the option is available, choose Repair.
- Open Snipping Tool, capture a new snip, and check for the button.
Repair is a general Windows app-troubleshooting step, not a Microsoft-confirmed Text actions fix. Some desktop apps do not offer Repair or Reset. Microsoft’s instructions are at Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.
3. Reset only if Repair did not help
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Snipping Tool > Advanced options.
- If Reset is offered, read the Windows prompt before proceeding. Reset may remove the app’s data or settings.
- Afterward, reopen the app and test with a new capture.
What version history can—and cannot—tell you
Microsoft announced Text Actions for Snipping Tool version 11.2308.33.0 in a Windows Insider rollout on September 14, 2023. A later rollout note covered Release Preview Insiders with version 11.2308.37.0 and higher. These are dated rollout details, not a current minimum-version guarantee or a complete eligibility chart for every PC. The announcement is in the Windows Insider Blog.

Do not confuse this OCR control with Click to Do. Microsoft’s separate Click to Do documentation says its Snipping Tool entry point requires version 11.2411.20.0 or later; that requirement is for Click to Do, not proof of the minimum version for the original Text actions button. See Microsoft’s Click to Do documentation.
Microsoft’s public Text actions instructions do not specify a current Windows build, Snipping Tool version, language-pack condition, or edition matrix that accounts for every missing-button case. A missing control by itself therefore does not identify its cause.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates or security fixes under that support lifecycle. That date does not, by itself, establish that Text actions was removed or unavailable on Windows 10. The cited lifecycle fact appears on Microsoft’s Windows support page.
If the button is still missing
Record your Windows version and build, along with the Snipping Tool version, then report the issue to Microsoft Support or through Feedback Hub. Those details can help identify the configuration without assuming a cause. The Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish system-file commands, registry edits, unofficial OCR downloads, or reinstalling Windows as routine first-line fixes.

Other ways to capture the screen
If you need a screenshot while diagnosing the app, Windows logo key + Shift + S starts a Snipping Tool capture. On supported devices, Windows logo key + PrtScn captures the screen; Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on devices without a PrtScn key. These are capture shortcuts, not replacements for OCR. See Microsoft’s Print Screen shortcut guidance.
