How to get a trusting fox
- Find two adult foxes. Mojang lists taiga, old growth taiga, snowy taiga, and grove biomes as fox habitats. Foxes can appear in groups of two to four. Their red and white variants are associated with non-snowy and snowy biomes, respectively. Mojang’s fox guide describes their behavior and habitats.
- Approach carefully. Foxes are shy and keep their distance. They sleep in dark places during the day and roam at night, so moving cautiously can make it easier to get close.
- Feed each adult fox. Give both a sweet berry or a glow berry to breed them.
- Keep the baby close. The kit trusts the player, but it may follow adult foxes if they move away. Attach a lead to help keep it nearby.
What “taming” means for foxes
Players often search for how to tame a fox, but feeding one wild adult does not turn it into a conventional pet. The practical method is to breed two foxes: their offspring trusts the player and does not run away. Mojang’s 2019 Java snapshot first described this trust behavior, and its current Tiny Takeover page still identifies breeding as the way to obtain baby foxes. Read the original snapshot notes.

Foxes pick up items lying on the ground. If a fox is holding something, offer it a sweet berry: the berry can cause the fox to drop its current item and pick up the food instead. This works because the game treats the fox’s mouth as its main hand for holding items, as Minecraft gameplay designer Cory Scheviak explained in Mojang’s fox behavior article.
Java and Bedrock availability
Mojang’s Tiny Takeover update page lists the update’s release date as March 24, 2026, and says it is available for Java and Bedrock. The page confirms that baby foxes are obtained through breeding. It does not provide a complete edition-by-edition comparison of every fox behavior, so this guide does not assume that every detail is identical between editions.
