If Snipping Tool freezes or crashes on Windows 10, restart the PC, try the app’s Repair or Reset option, and use Windows logo key + Shift + S as a possible capture workaround. These are low-risk troubleshooting steps based on Microsoft’s general Windows guidance; Microsoft does not guarantee they will fix a Snipping Tool crash.
1. Restart Windows and reopen Snipping Tool
Save any open work, restart the computer, and then launch Snipping Tool again. Microsoft lists restarting as an initial step for certain Windows program problems, but that guidance concerns installation, removal, or updating—not Snipping Tool crashes specifically. Treat this as a sensible first check, not a proven fix for this symptom. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance covers that restart step.

2. Try Repair in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select Snipping Tool, then choose Advanced options if it appears.
- Select Repair, if available, and try opening the app again.
Microsoft notes that Repair and Reset controls are not available for every app. If Advanced options or Repair is missing, continue to the next step only if Reset is offered. Microsoft’s Windows app guidance documents these controls.

Return to the app’s Advanced options page and select Reset if Repair is unavailable or failed to resolve the issue. Then reopen Snipping Tool. Microsoft recommends trying Repair before Reset when both are available; its guidance supports using Reset, but does not specify what Snipping Tool preferences or data may be retained.

4. Try the screenshot shortcut
Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft documents that this opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. If the overlay opens while the main app window is stuck, it may let you take a screenshot; the shortcut is a workaround, not a repair for a fully unresponsive app. A captured snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window for editing, saving, or sharing. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions describe the shortcut and capture behavior.
When the problem may be bigger than Snipping Tool
If Windows itself keeps restarting unexpectedly or displays a stop code, troubleshoot that separately from an app-only crash. Microsoft says unexpected restarts can involve hardware, drivers, or software; that does not establish the cause of a Snipping Tool freeze. See Microsoft’s guide to unexpected restarts and stop-code errors.

For a Snipping Tool-only issue, do not jump straight to resetting Windows or reinstalling the operating system. Microsoft advises starting with less disruptive recovery options and warns that some recovery actions can cause data loss. Review Microsoft’s recovery options guidance before considering broader system recovery.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. The end of support is important context, but it does not show why an individual Snipping Tool installation freezes or crashes. Microsoft’s support page states the cutoff.
