Any suspected snakebite needs urgent medical assessment, even when the wound looks minor or no symptoms have appeared. Call your local emergency number or arrange immediate transport. Keep the person calm and still, remove rings and tight clothing before swelling develops, and do not apply a tourniquet, cut the wound, or suck out venom.
Snakebite effects differ by species, venom and bite location. Pain, swelling, bruising, bleeding, nausea, weakness, tingling, vision changes, breathing difficulty, paralysis or shock can develop. Do not wait for a complete symptom list before seeking care.

Why a suspected snakebite is an emergency
Venom can affect the nervous system, blood clotting, muscles, kidneys, breathing and local tissue. A bite may initially cause little visible damage, while dangerous effects develop later. The absence of swelling, fang marks or immediate pain cannot safely prove that a bite was harmless.

WHO’s fact sheet published September 17, 2026, estimates that snakes bite about 5.4 million people worldwide each year, causing 1.8–2.7 million envenomings and 81,410–137,880 deaths. Those global figures do not predict what will happen after an individual bite; they explain why prompt professional assessment is the safe default.
Snakebite symptoms to watch for
Symptoms vary with the snake, the amount of venom, the bite site and the person’s health. A person may have only some of the signs below. Treat the bite as urgent whether symptoms are mild, severe or still absent.
Local signs around the bite
- One or more puncture marks, scratches or other wounds
- Pain, tenderness or burning at the site
- Redness and swelling, which may spread rapidly up a limb
- Bruising, blistering or bleeding
- Increasing discoloration or tissue damage around the wound
Local appearance is not a reliable test for venom. Some serious bites do not produce dramatic early swelling, and swelling alone does not identify the species or determine whether antivenom is needed.

Whole-body symptoms
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
- Weakness, drowsiness, dizziness or fainting
- Numbness or tingling around the face or in the limbs
- Blurred or altered vision, or trouble seeing
- Muscle twitching, weakness or paralysis
- Trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking
- Rapid heart rate, a weak pulse or low blood pressure
- Unusual bleeding, increased salivation, sweating or an altered taste
U.S. Poison Control notes that allergic-type airway swelling, low blood pressure and breathing problems can also occur. These effects can overlap with other medical emergencies, so do not attempt to diagnose the venom at home.
Red flags that require immediate emergency action
Call emergency services immediately if any of the following occur. If a bite is suspected, however, do not wait for one of these red flags before calling.
- Breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, choking, inability to swallow or rapidly increasing throat or facial swelling
- Progressive weakness, drooping eyelids, trouble speaking or paralysis
- Fainting, confusion, extreme drowsiness, a weak pulse or signs of shock
- Uncontrolled bleeding, blood in vomit or stool, or widespread bruising
- Rapidly expanding swelling, severe pain, blistering or darkening tissue
- Repeated vomiting, severe dizziness or symptoms that worsen over minutes or hours
Tell the dispatcher that a snakebite is suspected, where it happened, when it happened and whether breathing, consciousness or bleeding is affected. If the person becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally, follow the dispatcher’s instructions for emergency resuscitation.

What to do in the first minutes
- Get away from the snake. Move to a safe place to prevent another bite. Do not try to catch, handle or kill the snake. A photograph or description can help clinicians only if it can be obtained safely from a distance.
- Call for medical help. Use the local emergency number or arrange immediate transport to an emergency department. CDC/NIOSH advises not to drive yourself because dizziness or fainting may occur. In the UK, NHS guidance is to call 999 or go to A&E immediately and not drive yourself.
- Keep the person still and calm. Have them lie or sit safely, limit walking and keep the bitten limb as motionless as practical. WHO emphasizes complete immobilization and prompt transport because movement can spread venom through the circulation.
- Remove constricting items. Take off rings, watches, bracelets, shoes and tight clothing near the bite before swelling makes them difficult to remove. Do not delay the emergency call while searching for equipment.
- Record useful information. Note the time of the bite, the body part involved, changes in swelling or symptoms, and any safe description or photograph of the snake. Do not risk another exposure to identify it.
- Follow instructions from local clinicians or a poison center. Advice about washing, bandaging, positioning and pressure techniques differs by region and snake. Keep transport moving even while obtaining telephone advice.
What not to do—and why
- Do not apply a tight tourniquet. It can cut off blood flow and worsen tissue injury. Emergency clinicians, not bystanders, should decide whether any specialized immobilization method is appropriate.
- Do not cut, incise, burn or probe the wound. These actions add tissue damage and infection risk without removing venom.
- Do not suck venom from the wound. Suction does not provide a reliable treatment and can injure the area.
- Do not apply ice, electricity, chemicals or folk remedies. These can damage tissue or delay effective care.
- Do not give alcohol or unprescribed medicines. They may worsen dizziness, bleeding or vomiting and can complicate assessment.
- Do not use a commercial extraction device or consumer “antivenom” kit as a substitute for hospital care. Antivenom is a clinical medicine selected and administered by trained professionals.
Pressure immobilization requires particular caution. WHO describes a specific pressure-bandage approach for selected neurotoxic bites without local swelling and notes that pressure at the bite site may be suitable in some circumstances. Because venoms, species and health systems differ, do not improvise this method unless local emergency or poison-center professionals instruct you.

| United States | Call 911 or use local emergency services; do not drive yourself. U.S. Poison Control is available at 1-800-222-1222. | Use emergency services for breathing problems, paralysis, fainting, major bleeding or other life-threatening signs. A poison-center call must not delay transport. |
| United Kingdom | NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E immediately; do not drive yourself. | These instructions are UK-specific. Use the emergency number and clinical pathway for your own country elsewhere. |
| Other countries | Call the local emergency number and request urgent hospital assessment. | Snake species, available antivenoms and suitable first aid differ widely. Follow local medical advice rather than importing a method from another region. |
WHO guidance is global but deliberately warns that first-aid methods cannot be treated as universal. If you are in a remote area, tell emergency services your exact location, arrange the fastest safe evacuation and keep the person immobilized while waiting.

Assessment at the hospital
Clinicians monitor breathing, circulation, consciousness, swelling, pain, bleeding and neurologic function. They may ask when and where the bite occurred, how quickly symptoms changed and what the snake looked like. Blood tests and repeated examinations can detect clotting problems or muscle and kidney injury that are not obvious from the wound.

A suspected bite remains medically important even when initial tests or symptoms are reassuring. Observation decisions depend on the species found in that region, the bite location, the person’s symptoms and the clinician’s assessment.
Antivenom and supportive treatment
WHO says high-quality snake antivenoms are the most effective treatment to prevent or reverse most venomous effects. The correct product is specific to regional snake venoms and is administered in a clinical setting when the expected benefit outweighs the risks. It is not a consumer purchase or a home first-aid product.

When symptoms are delayed or seem mild
Do not use a symptom-free interval as permission to stay home. Venom effects can evolve, and a person may not notice weakness, vision changes or abnormal bleeding until they are progressing. Keep the person accompanied, still and under observation during transport or while waiting for responders.
Marking the edge of swelling with the time written beside it may help clinicians judge progression if emergency professionals suggest doing so, but it must not delay evacuation. Do not repeatedly walk the person around to “test” the limb, and do not let temporary improvement cancel the medical evaluation.
Special considerations for children
Children can have more severe effects because their lower body mass means the same venom quantity produces a larger dose per kilogram. Treat a child’s suspected bite as an emergency even if the child is quiet, the wound is small or swelling has not yet appeared. Carry or support the child rather than allowing them to walk, and tell responders the child’s age and approximate weight.

A practical decision checklist
- Was there a possible bite or contact with a snake? Start emergency assessment immediately; do not wait to identify the species.
- Are breathing, consciousness, strength, vision, bleeding or swelling changing? Tell emergency dispatch that symptoms are worsening and follow urgent instructions.
- Is the person alone or far from care? Call for help, share the exact location and prevent walking or exertion.
- Are rings, watches or tight clothing near the bite? Remove them before swelling increases.
- Is someone suggesting a tourniquet, cutting, suction or a folk remedy? Do not use those methods; they can cause additional harm and delay treatment.
- Are you relying on advice from another country? Confirm the plan with local emergency services or a regional poison center because pressure and bandaging recommendations vary.
What to tell the emergency team
Provide the bite time, location, body part, symptoms and their order of appearance. Report fainting, vomiting, breathing changes, weakness, bleeding, medicines, allergies and relevant medical conditions. If a photograph or description of the snake was obtained without risk, share it; never delay care to obtain one.
The safest rule is simple: a suspected snakebite is an urgent medical problem, not a wound to monitor at home. Prompt immobilization, rapid transport and professional treatment give the person the best chance of avoiding respiratory failure, severe bleeding, kidney injury and permanent tissue damage.
