Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum is 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB or larger storage device. Those figures are installation and compatibility floors, not a guarantee of comfortable multitasking. Whether Windows 11 “runs well” depends on the applications you use, browser tabs, updates, available free space, processor, graphics, and whether the computer can be upgraded.
A 4 GB/64 GB computer may start Windows 11, but it can run out of memory or storage quickly. Treat the minimum as a check for eligibility. Judge practical suitability by your workload and by how much memory and free disk space your current system actually has.

Microsoft’s official Windows 11 minimums
Microsoft currently lists these baseline requirements:
| Component | Official Windows 11 minimum | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | The minimum system memory for installing or upgrading Windows 11. |
| Storage | 64 GB or larger device | The minimum capacity of the system storage device, not a promise that 64 GB remains free after installation. |
Microsoft also says that individual features and applications can require more than the operating-system minimum and that performance scales with higher-end, more capable PCs. Consequently, there is no single Microsoft-published RAM number that guarantees a smooth experience for every person.

Memory and disk capacity do not establish eligibility by themselves. Windows 11 also requires a compatible processor, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a suitable display. Microsoft’s PC Health Check app can evaluate an existing Windows 10 computer against those requirements.
Why 4 GB of RAM is only a compatibility floor
RAM is the fast working area Windows and running programs use. When available memory becomes scarce, Windows has to move less-active data to storage. That can make switching between programs feel slow, especially when the system drive is nearly full or is itself slow.
At 4 GB, Windows may be able to boot and run basic tasks, but the same memory must serve the operating system, security components, background services, browser processes, and your applications. A browser with several active tabs, a video call, a document editor, and synchronization software can collectively demand more than a lightly used desktop. The result is not a fixed failure point: one user may be satisfied with simple tasks while another encounters constant slowdowns.

Do not describe 4 GB as a universal recommended configuration. It is the documented minimum. If a computer spends much of its time near full memory usage, adding RAM—where the hardware supports it—can provide more headroom than repeatedly closing programs.

Match memory to the work you actually do
The most useful way to decide whether a Windows 11 PC has enough RAM is to observe your normal workload rather than rely on a generic number. Use this framework:
| Workload | Likely experience at the 4 GB floor | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional web browsing, email, and one lightweight document | May be usable when only a few programs are open. | Whether tabs reload, apps pause, or the system becomes unresponsive when you switch tasks. |
| Many browser tabs, office applications, messaging, and cloud synchronization together | More likely to encounter memory pressure and reliance on the page file. | Task Manager memory percentage, disk activity during app switching, and delayed window responses. |
| Photo, video, audio, engineering, or other large creative projects | Project size and application requirements can exceed the operating-system minimum by a wide margin. | The software vendor’s own requirements and peak memory use while editing or exporting. |
| Modern games or 3D workloads | Windows’ minimum says little about the game’s requirements. | The game’s published RAM, processor, graphics, and storage requirements. |
| Virtual machines, development environments, or multiple demanding applications | Each additional environment competes for the same physical memory. | Memory commitment and paging while all required environments are active. |
To check a real session, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and choose Memory. Check usage while you perform the tasks that matter to you, not immediately after startup. A high, sustained memory percentage accompanied by heavy disk activity or noticeable pauses indicates that your workload needs more headroom, although a single brief spike does not prove an upgrade is necessary.
What the 64 GB storage minimum really tells you
The 64 GB requirement describes the capacity of the internal storage device. It does not mean Windows will leave 64 GB available for programs and personal files. Windows itself, optional components, language files, recovery data, installed applications, temporary files, and updates consume space. Microsoft notes that Windows size and the free space needed for updates vary with several factors.

Available capacity also changes over time. A computer that has enough room immediately after setup can become constrained after installing applications, retaining update files, downloading offline content, or saving photos and videos. Updates may need temporary working space in addition to the final size of the update.

Check actual free space in Settings > System > Storage. Review categories such as installed apps, temporary files, documents, and other users. Storage Sense can automate removal of selected temporary data, but it should not be treated as a substitute for adequate system-drive capacity. Keep personal archives on another location when appropriate, but remember that an external drive does not increase the capacity of the internal drive that contains Windows and its updates.
How to decide whether your current PC is adequate
- Check eligibility first. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check or review the processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, graphics, and display requirements. A memory or storage upgrade cannot correct an unsupported processor or missing security hardware.
- Record installed memory. Open Settings > System > About for the installed RAM figure, then use Task Manager’s Performance > Memory view while working.
- Measure free system-drive space. Go to Settings > System > Storage and note the free space on the drive containing Windows. Check again after installing your normal applications and completing updates.
- Reproduce your peak routine. Open the browser tabs, documents, meeting software, creative tools, or development environments you commonly use. Watch for persistent paging, app reloads, warnings about low disk space, or failed updates.
- Identify the limiting resource. If memory remains nearly full while storage has room, investigate RAM compatibility. If free disk space repeatedly becomes low while memory is acceptable, investigate storage expansion. If both are adequate but performance remains poor, the processor, graphics, thermals, or a particular application may be the constraint.
When a RAM upgrade is possible
Microsoft says some computers below the 4 GB floor may have options to add RAM. That does not mean every laptop or desktop is upgradeable. Memory may be soldered, slots may be occupied, or the motherboard may impose a maximum capacity.
Before buying a module, consult the computer maker’s specifications or service manual and verify:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Whether the memory is replaceable or soldered.
- The memory generation supported by the system, such as the required DDR type.
- The module format, such as a laptop-sized module or desktop module.
- The number of slots and whether one or more are already occupied.
- The maximum capacity and configuration supported by the processor and motherboard.
- Whether installing the part affects warranty or requires professional service.
A compatible kit is model-specific. Do not select a module solely because its advertised capacity matches your target. If the manufacturer does not document an upgrade path, assume that the installed memory cannot safely be expanded until qualified service information says otherwise.

- Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
When replacing or expanding the system drive makes sense
Microsoft also notes that some undersized storage devices can be upgraded. A compatible internal SSD can provide more capacity when the existing drive is replaceable and the computer supports the new device. The correct part depends on the interface, physical form factor, connection, firmware support, and the computer’s service procedure.
Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model before purchasing. Confirm whether the drive is removable, whether a second slot exists, and how Windows and personal data will be migrated. A larger drive solves a capacity problem only if it is installed as the system drive or otherwise gives Windows sufficient internal space; placing files on an external drive does not enlarge the Windows partition.
Compare upgrade options on these axes:
| Question | RAM upgrade | Internal storage upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Primary benefit | More working memory for simultaneous applications. | More room for Windows, applications, updates, and files. |
| Compatibility checks | Memory generation, module format, slots, and supported maximum. | Interface, form factor, capacity limit, and migration method. |
| Serviceability | May be soldered or inaccessible. | May be soldered, proprietary, or difficult to replace. |
| Evidence of need | Sustained high memory use and paging during your workload. | Repeated low-space warnings or insufficient room for updates and applications. |
Copilot+ PC requirements are a separate category
Microsoft lists 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory and a 256 GB SSD or UFS for Copilot+ PCs. Those figures apply to that specific PC category. They are not a replacement for Windows 11’s general 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage minimums, and they should not be presented as a universal promise that every Windows 11 computer needs exactly those specifications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you are evaluating a Copilot+ model, check the complete Copilot+ hardware definition in addition to memory and storage. If you are installing ordinary Windows 11, use the general Windows 11 requirements and your own workload as the decision points.

Common mistakes and practical fixes
Confusing minimum with recommended
Mistake: Treating 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage as a comfortable configuration for every task.
Fix: Label both figures as minimums, then test your actual workload and application requirements.
Assuming 64 GB means 64 GB free
Mistake: Planning to use the entire device capacity for applications and files after installing Windows.
Fix: Check free space in Settings and leave room for variable Windows components, temporary files, and updates.
Buying an incompatible part
Mistake: Ordering a generic RAM kit or SSD without checking the computer model.
Fix: Verify generation, format, interface, slots, capacity limits, and service instructions in the manufacturer’s documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Expecting storage to solve memory pressure
Mistake: Replacing a drive when Task Manager shows that RAM is the persistent bottleneck.
Fix: Identify whether memory or storage is limiting performance before spending money. Paging uses storage, but additional capacity is not the same as additional RAM.
Ignoring other Windows 11 requirements
Mistake: Assuming a PC qualifies because it has 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB drive.
Fix: Check processor support, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot-capable UEFI, graphics, display, and the result from PC Health Check.
Bottom line for choosing a Windows 11 PC
For installation, Microsoft’s floor is 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. For a computer that runs well, those numbers are only the starting point. Choose or upgrade based on the applications you actually keep open, observed memory pressure, real free space on the internal system drive, and the machine’s processor and graphics capabilities. Confirm that any RAM or SSD part fits the exact model, because some systems cannot be upgraded.
