How to Discover Indie Games and Smaller Studios on Xbox

Use Indie Selects for curated recommendations, ID@Xbox for broader independent-game browsing and Xbox demo festivals for limited-time hands-on previews.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fastest way to find independent games on Xbox is to start with Indie Selects, Xbox’s player-facing hub for curated independent games. Then use ID@Xbox to browse more games from independent developers, and watch for time-limited demo collections when Xbox runs an Indie Selects Demo Fest or a similar event.

These routes overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Indie Selects is editorial curation for players; ID@Xbox is the program through which independent developers bring games to Xbox and self-publish; demo festivals are temporary opportunities to try selected games before release. The guide below shows how to use each route without assuming that a featured game, menu label or event will remain available.

Start with Indie Selects for curated recommendations

Open the live Indie Selects page when you want a short, changing list rather than the entire Xbox catalog. Xbox describes the hub as a dedicated destination for curated independent games. Its selections are made by Xbox staff and are organized into weekly collections, rotating themed spotlights and monthly selections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact games on the page are not permanent. A title highlighted this month may disappear from the featured view when the next collection arrives, so use the live hub as your current reference instead of relying on an old article or screenshot. If a game interests you, open its current Store listing from the hub while it is still easy to find.

Finding the hub on an Xbox console

  1. From the Xbox dashboard, open Store.
  2. Choose Games.
  3. Look for the Indie Selects destination or use the Store’s search to locate it.
  4. Open a game’s listing to read its current description, platform information and availability before deciding what to do next.

Xbox documented the Store, then Games route when Indie Selects launched. Store layouts can change by console generation, account region and software update, so the direct web address is the safer evergreen path. The available Xbox documentation does not establish one identical navigation sequence for every console generation, Xbox on PC, mobile app or country.

How to read a curated collection

Use the collection’s theme and the game pages together. A weekly list is a quick way to narrow the field, while a themed spotlight can reveal games connected by a particular style or idea. Monthly selections provide a broader editorial snapshot and may explain why staff chose the games. The collection is a recommendation layer, not a statement that every independent game on Xbox appears there.

Xbox’s current FAQ says the weekly collection focuses on games outside Game Pass. That does not mean every Indie Selects game is outside Game Pass: themed collections may sometimes include Game Pass titles. Check the individual Store listing for the current way to access a game rather than inferring its subscription status from the Indie Selects label.

Understand what ID@Xbox is—and what it is not

ID@Xbox is Xbox’s program for helping independent developers bring games directly to players and self-publish on Xbox platforms. Its discovery page displays games associated with the program, making it useful when you want to browse beyond the small set chosen for a particular Indie Selects collection.

The distinction matters when you are deciding where to look:

  • Indie Selects: a curated, player-facing destination with rotating weekly, themed and monthly recommendations.
  • ID@Xbox: a developer and publishing pathway, plus a player-facing page that displays a selection of associated games.

The games shown on the ID@Xbox page are a selection, not evidence of a complete catalog of every independent studio or every ID@Xbox release. A game can be associated with ID@Xbox without being in the current Indie Selects collection, and a changing Indie Selects feature should not be treated as a permanent ID@Xbox index.

When ID@Xbox is the better starting point

Use the ID@Xbox page when you already know a studio or genre and want to explore a wider set of independent releases. It is also useful after you finish browsing Indie Selects: compare the two pages to see whether other games catch your attention. Because neither page promises a complete, unchanging list, use them as discovery surfaces and verify the current Store page for any game you plan to play.

Choose the discovery route that fits your goal

Route Best for What to keep in mind
Indie Selects Quick, curated recommendations Weekly themes and featured games rotate; the current list is on the live Xbox hub.
ID@Xbox Browsing a broader selection of games from independent developers The displayed games are a selection, not proof of a complete catalog.
Demo Fest collections Trying a game before deciding whether to follow or buy it Events have date windows; demos may be unfinished and availability can vary by country.

There is no requirement to choose only one route. A practical sequence is to use Indie Selects for an editorial shortlist, ID@Xbox for additional browsing, then a demo event when one is running and a game offers a playable build.

Use demo festivals to try games before release

Xbox sometimes creates dedicated Store collections for demos, giving players a way to sample upcoming independent games. These collections are event-based, not a permanent menu. Watch Xbox announcements and the Store for a current event rather than assuming that a past festival remains available.

What the June 2026 Demo Fest shows

The June 2026 Indie Selects Demo Fest ran from June 4 through June 30, 2026. It offered more than 30 demos across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Xbox on PC. That number describes that specific event and date range; it is not a count of all indie games or all demos on Xbox.

Because the event window has ended, do not present those demos as continuously available. A future festival may use a different date range, lineup or platform mix. When an event is live, open its Store collection and check each game’s listing rather than relying on a general event description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret an early demo correctly

Xbox’s announcement cautioned that these are early looks at games still in development. The final versions can differ at launch, and availability by country can change while developers continue polishing their work. Treat a demo as a preview of a project, not a guarantee of final content, performance, release timing or regional access.

  • Read the demo’s current Store description for supported platforms and region restrictions.
  • Expect unfinished elements or changes between the demo and the released game.
  • Record the event’s closing date if you want to return to a title; a collection may vanish when the event ends.
  • Use a demo to decide whether a game merits further attention, not as proof that the final product will be identical.

Use Xbox Wire roundups as an editorial second layer

The Store hub is the place to check the current collection, but Xbox Wire articles add context. The January 2024 launch article explains why Xbox created Indie Selects and documents the original dashboard route. It also includes the rationale from ID@Xbox Marketing Manager Glenn Gregory: “we love games made by independent developers, and we want more people to discover them, buy them, and play them!”

Monthly roundups can help when a broad collection feels difficult to scan. For example, the June 2026 Indie Selects article provides editorial context for that month’s choices. Such articles are useful for understanding what a selection is trying to highlight, but they are dated snapshots. Follow the link to the live Indie Selects hub before treating a named game or lineup as current.

A two-stage reading method

  1. Read the roundup to understand the staff’s explanation and the collection’s theme.
  2. Open the live Indie Selects page to see what is currently featured.
  3. Open the individual Store listing for the game’s present availability, platform support and access options.

This method separates editorial explanation from volatile Store information. It also avoids assuming that a game remains featured simply because it appeared in an older Xbox Wire post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable Xbox discovery routine

Use this routine whenever you want to find smaller studios without committing to one particular genre or release date.

Step 1: Check the live Indie Selects hub

Start at Xbox.com/IndieSelects or reach the destination through Store and Games on the dashboard. Scan the weekly collection first for a focused shortlist, then look at any current themed spotlight or monthly selection. Because these lists rotate, do this step again when you return weeks later rather than saving an old list as if it were permanent.

Step 2: Shortlist games without over-interpreting the label

Open the games that match your interests and note their current Store details. Indie Selects tells you that a game has been curated; it does not by itself establish that the title is included with a subscription, available in every country or supported on every Xbox device. Use the game’s own listing for those decisions.

Step 3: Broaden the search through ID@Xbox

Visit ID@Xbox after the curated pass. Browse the games displayed there for independent developers you did not encounter in Indie Selects. Remember that the page is a displayed selection rather than a complete directory, so an absence from the page is not evidence that a studio has no Xbox release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Watch for a live demo collection

When Xbox announces an Indie Selects Demo Fest or another demo-focused collection, check its start and end dates. During the window, open the collection and inspect each demo’s listing. Outside the window, treat the event as historical and return to the live Store and Indie Selects pages for current options.

Step 5: Use editorial notes to narrow your next visit

Read a relevant Xbox Wire monthly roundup when you want to understand why a group of games was selected. Then return to the live hub so your final shortlist reflects the current collection rather than the article’s publication date.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming Indie Selects is a complete indie catalog

It is not. Indie Selects is curated, and its contents rotate. Use ID@Xbox and the Store’s current listings to broaden the search.

Confusing ID@Xbox with a recommendation list

ID@Xbox describes a developer and publishing program. Its player-facing page displays associated games, but it does not promise that every participating game appears there or in Indie Selects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a demo festival as permanent

The June 2026 event ended on June 30, 2026. Future events may be announced, but a dated collection should never be presented as continuously available.

Assuming every featured game is outside Game Pass

The current FAQ says the weekly collection focuses on games outside Game Pass, while themed collections may include Game Pass titles. Check each Store listing for the game’s current access conditions.

Expecting identical menus on every device

Xbox documented Store, then Games for the dashboard, but interfaces can differ by console generation, Xbox on PC, mobile app and region. If the menu is different, use the live web hub and Store search instead of following an outdated screenshot.

Reading a demo as a final review

In-development demos can differ from final releases, and country availability can change. Use them as limited previews and verify the final Store listing later.

What to check before you install or buy

  • Current availability: confirm that the Store listing is still accessible in your country.
  • Platform: check whether the game supports your Xbox console model, Xbox on PC or more than one platform.
  • Access terms: do not infer Game Pass inclusion or purchase requirements from a collection label.
  • Build status: if the item is a demo, expect development changes.
  • Timing: note whether you are viewing a live collection or an article describing an earlier month or event.

These checks take less time than trying to reconstruct a vanished collection from an old roundup. They also keep the distinction clear between a staff recommendation, a developer-program listing and a temporary playable preview.

How the three routes work together

Indie Selects is the most direct starting point for a player who wants curated independent games now. ID@Xbox expands the search to a broader displayed selection connected with independent developers. Demo festivals add hands-on evidence when a time-limited event is running. Xbox Wire roundups explain editorial reasoning but should be paired with the live hub for current information.

Use the live Xbox pages as your source of truth for what is currently featured, and treat dated announcements as context. That approach lets you discover smaller studios without promising that a particular game, menu placement, subscription status or demo will remain unchanged.

Plan around changing collections

Discovery on Xbox works best as a recurring habit rather than a one-time search. Weekly collections can change before you return, themed spotlights can replace one another, and monthly staff selections are snapshots of a particular period. If you maintain a personal shortlist, save the game’s Store page or name and revisit the listing instead of saving only the collection page. This makes it easier to tell whether a game is still available, moved out of the featured view or now has different access terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a low-effort routine, check Indie Selects at the beginning of a month, scan ID@Xbox whenever you want a deeper browse, and watch Xbox announcements for a demo event. You do not need special equipment or a physical edition to follow these steps. A console or Xbox on PC with access to the Store, or a web browser for the live pages, is sufficient; the specific interface and available titles can still depend on account region and platform.

How to compare two games you discover

Once a collection gives you several candidates, compare the individual Store listings rather than the placement of their tiles. Confirm the supported platform, current availability in your country and whether the listing is for a full release or an early demo. Then read the description and any current access information. This is especially important when one title came from the weekly collection and another came from a themed spotlight: their appearance in the same hub does not establish identical subscription or purchase conditions.

If you found a game through ID@Xbox, record the studio name and search that name again later. The program page is useful for discovery, but its displayed selection can change and is not a complete index. If the studio does not appear on a later visit, that alone does not show that its game left Xbox.

Why dates matter

Dated Xbox Wire posts are valuable for explaining how Indie Selects works and for documenting special events, but they should not be used as live catalogs. The January 24, 2024 launch explanation and the June 2026 monthly and Demo Fest posts describe what Xbox highlighted at those times. The June 4–30, 2026 festival’s more-than-30-demo figure belongs only to that event. Always pair an older article with the current hub and the game’s Store listing before recommending it to someone else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently overlooked details

  • A curated feature is not a completeness claim: many independent games will not be in the current Indie Selects view.
  • An ID@Xbox association is not a guarantee of placement in Indie Selects or on the ID@Xbox discovery page.
  • The weekly Indie Selects collection generally emphasizes games outside Game Pass, but themed collections can include Game Pass titles.
  • A demo event can end even while a participating game remains in development, and a demo’s country availability can differ from the final release.
  • The documented Store > Games route is useful, but it is not a promise that every device shows the same labels.

Keeping these limits in mind prevents the most common discovery errors: promising a title is still featured, calling a temporary demo permanent, or treating a program page as a definitive list of every smaller studio on Xbox.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the quickest way to find indie games on Xbox?

Open the live Indie Selects hub at Xbox.com/IndieSelects or find it through Store and Games on the dashboard. It is Xbox’s curated starting point for independent games, with weekly collections, themed spotlights and monthly selections.

Is ID@Xbox the same thing as Indie Selects?

No. ID@Xbox is Xbox’s program that helps independent developers bring games to Xbox and self-publish. Indie Selects is a player-facing editorial collection. The two are related, but neither page should be treated as a complete catalog of the other.

Are all Indie Selects games included with Game Pass?

No. Xbox says the weekly collection focuses on games outside Game Pass, while themed collections may sometimes include Game Pass titles. Check each game’s current Store listing for access terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I still play the June 2026 Indie Selects Demo Fest demos?

The event ran June 4–30, 2026, so that collection was time-limited and should not be presented as continuously available. Check the current Store and Xbox announcements for later demo collections.

Are Xbox indie demos finished versions of the games?

Usually they are previews of games still in development. Xbox cautions that final content can differ at launch and that availability can vary by country. Use the demo as an early sample, not a guarantee of the final release.

Do I need special hardware or a physical game to discover Xbox indies?

No physical product is required. Use the Xbox Store on a supported console, Xbox on PC or the live web pages. Platform support and regional availability are listed on each game’s current Store page.

Why did a game disappear from Indie Selects?

The hub rotates weekly collections and themed spotlights, and monthly selections are snapshots. A game leaving the featured view does not by itself mean it left Xbox. Search for its current Store listing or look for it through ID@Xbox.
