Study physics and mathematics first. A physics or astronomy degree can be a good route, provided you build a strong foundation in core physics, advanced math and computing. Add astronomy courses and research experience as you progress. If you want to lead independent astrophysics research, expect to pursue graduate study, typically through a PhD.
Build your foundation in physics and mathematics
Astrophysics uses physical laws and mathematical tools to investigate stars, planets, galaxies and the universe. The important choice is therefore not simply whether a degree is called “astronomy” or “physics.” Look for a course of study that develops both subjects deeply, then adds the astronomy, computing and research opportunities that fit your interests. The American Astronomical Society (AAS) describes physics and mathematics as central preparation for astronomy, while noting that degree structures vary between institutions. Physics: the core subject
Start with the standard undergraduate physics sequence. Mechanics gives you tools for describing motion and forces; electricity and magnetism introduces fields and electromagnetic radiation. Thermodynamics and statistical mechanics address heat, energy and the collective behavior of many particles. Quantum physics is needed to understand matter and radiation at small scales. These subjects form a toolkit for interpreting physical systems rather than a set of astronomy facts to memorize.
Laboratory courses matter alongside lectures. They give you practice making measurements, estimating uncertainty, analyzing results and explaining whether evidence supports a conclusion. Advanced physics electives can extend the foundation; the AAS also identifies topics such as atomic and nuclear physics as relevant preparation for graduate study in astronomy. The exact sequence and course names depend on the university. AAS: About a Career in Astronomy · AAS: Planning Your Education

Mathematics: the language of the work
Plan to study calculus, linear algebra, multivariable calculus and differential equations. Calculus helps describe changing quantities; multivariable calculus extends that reasoning to systems with several dimensions. Linear algebra provides methods for working with vectors, coordinate changes and systems of equations. Differential equations are used to express how a physical system changes over time or space.
These are not just prerequisites to get through before “real astronomy” begins. Mathematical fluency lets you express a physical model, solve or approximate it, and understand what its results imply. AAS career guidance characterizes research astronomers as needing extensive mathematical knowledge. The precise course requirements differ by degree program, so compare actual curricula rather than assuming every major with an astronomy label includes the same math sequence. Computing and data analysis
Include computer science or programming courses when you can. Computing complements physics and math: it helps you analyze astronomy data, write code and work with simulations. AAS career guidance describes undergraduate research that can involve code, data analysis and theoretical problems. If your degree plan has room for electives, a programming course is a practical addition; later coursework or research can help you apply those skills to astronomical questions. Astronomy and astrophysics courses
Take astronomy or astrophysics courses to connect your foundational subjects to celestial systems and research questions. These courses can provide context for what the physics is being used to explain, and help you discover which areas interest you. They supplement rather than replace the physics and math sequence: an astronomy program that leaves major gaps in either may be less useful preparation for advanced study than its name suggests.
Astrophysics is housed in different ways across colleges. Some institutions offer a dedicated astronomy or astrophysics degree; others place the subject within a physics department. The AAS directory of college departments offering astronomy-related degrees illustrates that variety. Use department names as a starting point, then check required courses and research options.
Writing and communication
Practice writing clearly and explaining technical ideas to other people. Research involves communicating methods, evidence and conclusions, not only performing calculations. Writing-intensive courses, presentations and reports can build that ability alongside your scientific studies. AAS education and career guidance includes communication among useful preparation for the field. AAS: Planning Your Education · AAS: About a Career in Astronomy

Choose high-school courses that prepare you for college physics
If you are still in secondary school, prioritize mathematics through precalculus when available, plus physics and chemistry. This combination prepares you for the demanding quantitative work in college physics and astronomy. The AAS recommends this grounding for students planning to major in astronomy or physics. Advanced-placement calculus or physics can be useful preparation where offered, but the guidance does not describe either as a universal requirement. AAS: Planning Your Education

Decide between a physics major and an astronomy major by comparing curricula
Both routes can prepare you for graduate astronomy study. A physics major is a strong option when it offers a full physics and math sequence plus astronomy electives or access to astronomy research. An astronomy or astrophysics major can be equally suitable if it includes substantial physics and mathematics. AAS education guidance recognizes both pathways; the course plan, not the title alone, is the key comparison. AAS: Planning Your Education

Before choosing, compare required courses, not just the introductory descriptions on department websites. If you already have a possible graduate program in mind, check its current prerequisites: requirements vary by institution and specialty. The AAS lists astronomy-related departments in different academic homes, so a physics department may have the relevant courses and mentors even if “astronomy” is not in its name. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use this checklist to compare college programs
When looking at actual colleges, check whether the program gives you a practical route through all the preparation you need. Ask an academic adviser or department whether courses are required, offered regularly, open to undergraduates and available in a workable order.
- Physics depth: Can you take mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and quantum physics, including the necessary laboratory courses?
- Mathematics: Is there a clear sequence through calculus, linear algebra, multivariable calculus and differential equations?
- Astronomy access: Are astronomy or astrophysics courses and relevant faculty available, whether through a separate department or physics?
- Computational skills: Can you learn programming and develop data-analysis or simulation experience?
- Research and mentoring: Can undergraduates join projects, work with faculty or apply to relevant research programs?
- Flexibility: If a required course is missing or offered infrequently, are there electives or other ways to meet the prerequisites you will need?
These checks matter more than a program’s label because institutions arrange astronomy degrees differently. They also help uncover practical barriers, such as a course sequence that delays an essential prerequisite or limited access to research. Match the program to your goals and, if you are considering graduate study, confirm requirements with the programs you might apply to. Build research experience during your undergraduate degree
Coursework builds knowledge; research experience helps you learn how to use it on an open-ended problem. When feasible, seek a project through a department, faculty member or undergraduate research program. The work might involve writing code, analyzing astronomy data or exploring a theoretical problem. These activities can also help you discover which subjects or research areas you want to pursue further. AAS: About a Career in Astronomy
Look for an opportunity that fits your preparation rather than waiting until you have mastered every topic. Ask what background the project expects, what training is provided, and how students contribute. A project should give you a chance to practice scientific reasoning and communicate what you did; the exact format and availability depend on the institution. Strong physics, math and computing preparation makes it easier to take on more demanding work as your studies advance.
Plan graduate study around the kind of work you want
For independent research astronomy positions, plan on graduate study and typically a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, physics or a closely related field. Graduate study usually brings more specialized coursework and supervised research, followed by dissertation research. Requirements and research specialties vary across institutions, so consult current admissions pages for programs you are considering. A PhD is not the only possible qualification for every job connected with astronomy. Some telescope-operations, software and other support roles may be available to people with bachelor’s or master’s degrees, depending on the position. Understand what degree numbers do—and do not—tell you
In a September 2, 2026 announcement, the AAS reported nearly 1,000 astronomy and astrophysics bachelor’s degrees awarded annually in the United States, roughly five times the number in 2000. The report draws on 78 U.S. institutions, 66 of which offer undergraduate degrees in astronomy and/or astrophysics. This is a measure of degrees awarded, not an estimate of an individual student’s chance of admission or employment. It describes the U.S. undergraduate landscape; degree availability and career paths differ elsewhere. AAS, “The Astronomy Major Is Booming,” September 2, 2026
