Snakebite First Aid: What to Do While Waiting for Emergency Help

For a suspected venomous snakebite, call emergency services immediately, keep the person calm and still, and avoid tourniquets or home remedies. Pressure-bandage advice depends on the snake and local medical guidance.

If someone may have been bitten by a venomous snake, move them away from the snake, call local emergency services, and keep them still. Do not wait for symptoms or try to treat the bite at home. First aid is only an interim measure; urgent assessment at a health facility matters even when the bite looks minor. Advice can vary by region and snake, so follow emergency dispatchers and qualified local medical professionals.

What to do immediately

  1. Get to safety and call for help. Move away from the snake without approaching it. Call your local emergency number or arrange immediate transport to a health facility. Do not drive yourself: dizziness or fainting may occur. The World Health Organization says people who suspect a venomous snakebite should be transported to a health facility without delay. WHO treatment guidance; CDC/NIOSH guidance.
  2. Keep the person calm and still. Minimize movement and exertion. Immobilize the bitten limb with a splint if available, and avoid having the person walk. WHO advises immobilizing the person completely; where possible, use a makeshift stretcher for transport. WHO treatment guidance; CDC Yellow Book.
  3. Remove items that may become tight. Take off rings, watches, bracelets, anklets, and tight clothing near the bite before swelling develops. WHO treatment guidance; CDC/NIOSH guidance.
  4. Watch breathing and responsiveness. If the person is vomiting or becoming drowsy, place them on their left side in the recovery position if it is safe to do so. Monitor their airway and breathing, be ready to follow emergency-dispatch instructions, and tell the dispatcher promptly about any change. WHO treatment guidance; WHO guidance on improving treatment.
  5. Note the snake only from a safe distance. If it can be done without approaching, a photograph or description of its appearance may help clinicians. Do not chase, capture, or handle the snake, and do not delay the call or transport to identify it. CDC/NIOSH guidance; CDC Yellow Book.

What not to do

Should you use a pressure bandage?

Not as a universal rule. Whether pressure immobilization is appropriate depends on the likely snake, its venom effects, and local medical protocol. WHO limits the Australian pressure-immobilization method to bites from neurotoxic snakes that do not cause local swelling; its Q&A says pressure methods are not appropriate for snakes that cause significant local tissue damage. CDC’s Yellow Book likewise says recommendations depend on the snake and local expertise, and notes that pressure immobilization may be considered for neurotoxic venom. WHO treatment guidance; WHO Q&A; CDC Yellow Book.

Ask local emergency dispatch, a poison center, or a qualified clinician whether a pressure bandage is recommended where you are. Do not improvise one based on generic online instructions.

Why prompt medical assessment matters

Snake envenoming can cause paralysis that affects breathing, bleeding disorders and potentially fatal hemorrhage, kidney failure, or severe tissue damage. Antivenom and supportive care require professional assessment; a person cannot reliably determine at home that treatment is unnecessary because symptoms have not appeared or the wound seems small.
