Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG all operate across audit or assurance, tax, and advisory or consulting. The clearest differences are usually in a particular country’s service structure and the specific team, role, and client market—not in a universal firm-wide ranking. For a career decision, compare equivalent openings in the same location and service line; for a client decision, verify the local member firm’s offering, sector experience, engagement scope, and independence requirements.

How Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG compare on services

Each Big Four network offers overlapping professional services, but the names and organization of those services vary by country and can change over time. The examples below reflect the specific official pages cited, not a promise that every local member firm uses the same structure.

Firm Service structure shown in the cited source Scope to keep in mind
Deloitte Its Middle East student careers page lists Audit, Consulting, Enterprise Risk Services, Financial Advisory, Tax, and internal support. Deloitte said it planned to align capabilities during FY2025 into Audit & Assurance, Tax & Legal, and two consulting units: Strategy, Risk & Transactions and Technology & Transformation. Labels can change, and the Middle East careers page is a regional example. Deloitte Middle East careers; Deloitte FY2024 announcement
PwC PwC US describes assurance, tax, and advisory, and also calls out audit, business services, advisory, and tax. This is a US example, not evidence that all PwC firms use identical service labels. PwC US careers overview
EY EY Norway presents Assurance, Consulting, Tax & Law, and EY-Parthenon, alongside technology and data and business support areas. The page illustrates a Norwegian career taxonomy; local organization and offerings can differ. EY Norway careers
KPMG KPMG Global reports Audit, Tax & Legal Services, and Advisory. The global revenue release describes these functions but does not provide a like-for-like account of every local offering. KPMG FY2024 global release

In broad terms, assurance and audit work addresses financial reporting and related confidence; tax teams advise on tax matters; and advisory or consulting teams help clients with areas such as risk, transactions, strategy, technology, and transformation. The precise service scope depends on the local firm and engagement. A changing service taxonomy is not, by itself, proof that one network provides a better service.

What the service-line names mean for a career

Service-line labels are a starting point, not a complete description of day-to-day work. Before applying, read the actual role description and ask what projects the local team handles, what a typical week involves, which clients or industries it serves, and how the role fits into the team’s structure.

  • Audit or assurance: Check the role’s focus, client sectors, reporting standards, and any relevant professional qualification expectations.
  • Tax: Establish which tax specialties and jurisdictions the team covers, and whether the work is compliance, advisory, or a mix.
  • Consulting or advisory: Look for the actual specialty—such as risk, transactions, strategy, technology, or transformation—rather than assuming all roles under one label are alike.
  • Internal or business support: Some career pages also list firm-internal functions. Confirm whether a vacancy serves external clients or supports the firm itself.

How to choose a Big Four firm for a career

The available career pages show different regional examples, not a standardized test of employer outcomes. Deloitte’s Middle East student page lists five service paths, describes possible movement between areas without guaranteeing it, and says professional qualifications may be studied. EY Norway describes early-career, graduate, and experienced hiring across its service and support areas. PwC US advertises entry-level careers and a learning and development framework. These are firm descriptions, not independent evidence that one firm offers better learning, progression, or working conditions. Compare like with like

  1. Match the location and role. Compare postings for the same city or market, service line, seniority, and start date. Different local member firms and client markets can make a firm-name comparison misleading.
  2. Check entry route and credentials. Read the stated education, licensing, and qualification requirements for that jurisdiction and role. Do not assume a credential expectation in one country applies elsewhere.
  3. Ask what the work entails. Clarify client mix, project types, expected travel, busy periods, and the balance of client-facing and internal work.
  4. Compare employment terms directly. Ask the local firm about compensation, benefits, working arrangements, learning support, and how performance and promotion are evaluated.
  5. Use your priorities as the tie-breaker. Decide whether you value a particular specialty, broad exposure, a defined qualification route, location, travel pattern, or working arrangement most.

The sources do not establish comparable current pay, hours, promotion rates, benefits, or employee satisfaction across all four firms. A reliable choice therefore requires current local job details and direct answers from the hiring team, rather than a global employer ranking.

Reported FY2024 revenue: useful scale context, not a quality ranking

The firms’ FY2024 announcements offer a rough view of network scale. Their fiscal year ends differ, and the figures are company-reported, so they should not be treated as perfectly synchronized or directly comparable measures of service quality.

Network Reported FY2024 global revenue Fiscal year and other reported scale
Deloitte US$67.2 billion Year ended 31 May 2024; approximately 460,000 people globally. Deloitte FY2024 announcement
PwC US$55.4 billion gross revenue Year ended 30 June 2024; more than 370,000 people; served 86% of Global Fortune 500 companies; 105,549 people joined PwC firms. These are figures reported in PwC US’s FY24 overview. PwC US careers overview
EY US$51.2 billion Global FY2024 revenue; the cited announcement does not give a fiscal year-end date in the supplied figures. EY FY2024 revenue announcement
KPMG US$38.4 billion Year ended 30 September 2024; globally aggregated member-firm revenue and global headcount of 275,288. KPMG FY2024 global release

These totals are useful as context on reported network size. They do not show which firm is best for a given job or engagement, and the differing reporting periods and aggregation conventions limit direct comparison.

How a client should compare the Big Four

For an organization selecting a provider, start with the problem to solve and the local delivery team—not the network’s total revenue. Ask each candidate to identify the member firm that would contract and deliver the work, the relevant sector and technical experience, the proposed engagement scope and team, and any applicable independence restrictions. The networks overlap in broad service categories, but that does not establish that every local office offers the same specialist work or is eligible for every engagement.

For audit-related work in particular, independence rules may restrict whether a firm can provide other services to the same client. Confirm those constraints with the relevant local firm before treating a service list as evidence of availability.
