The product page gives 70 dBA at speed 3 and describes the 690 m³/h figure as free-outlet maximum airflow. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish how the hood will perform in a particular installed kitchen.

Check the actual cabinet opening and the cooktop layout before buying. The hood is 900 mm wide, and its undermount installation makes the available cabinet space and the clearances above the hob important. The listed overall dimensions alone do not establish the required cut-out or safe clearance for your particular installation.

- Confirm cabinet dimensions and installation clearances in the manual for the exact market and unit.
- Plan for a 150 mm diameter duct if exhausting to atmosphere, and verify that the route can accommodate it.
- Check local electrical requirements and confirm the unit can be connected as intended.
Smeg lists 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz, and 10 A. The technical sheet allows either ducting to atmosphere or recirculation; the correct installation details and clearances should be confirmed using the market-specific manual rather than inferred from these headline specifications.
Ducted or recirculating: what changes?
In ducted use, the hood exhausts air to atmosphere through ducting. In recirculating use, air passes through carbon filters before returning to the room. Smeg lists both modes, but the specification does not establish that they deliver equivalent extraction in a real installation. Duct route, installation and operating conditions affect practical performance, so compare models using the same test method and distinguish a free-outlet maximum from installed results.

What filter upkeep should you expect?
The three supplied stainless steel filters are grease filters. For recirculation, CHOICE identifies the carbon filter as KITFC152 and reports that two are required, with replacement every four months. CHOICE also lists an annual carbon-filter cost of $259; its listing does not show the figure’s date, so treat it as a reported reference rather than a current price. Is the SHU970X still available and supportable?
CHOICE marks the SHU970X as discontinued. That status does not prove that remaining retail stock is unavailable everywhere. Check local sellers for stock and ask the regional seller or Smeg about service and warranty coverage for the specific unit and purchase date. The product sheet states a two-year parts-and-labour warranty, but regional terms may vary.

A parts lookup page returned “No Parts found” for the model at the time it was checked. That result is inconclusive: it does not show that Smeg or another supplier cannot provide parts. Confirm availability directly rather than using the lookup result as proof that support has ended.

- Airflow figures measured under the same method, and whether they describe free-outlet or installed performance.
- Noise ratings under the same test method and at comparable operating speeds.
- Whether the appliance supports your preferred ducted or recirculating setup and whether your kitchen can accommodate the required ducting.
- Cabinet fit, hob clearances, and electrical requirements using each model’s installation documentation.
- Filter type, replacement interval, current local filter price, and service access.
- Warranty terms for your region and purchase date.

The SHU970X’s published specifications make it a candidate for a 90 cm undermount installation where the cabinet, clearances, and 150 mm duct route suit. Its stated 690 m³/h maximum, 53–70 dBA noise range, and recirculation option are manufacturer figures, not independent performance results. The key ownership check is recirculation upkeep: CHOICE reports two KITFC152 carbon filters with four-month replacement, while current price and availability need confirmation. Because CHOICE lists the model as discontinued, verify stock, parts support, and the applicable warranty before purchase.
