Why Your Fan Gets Louder and Quieter: Causes by Fan Type

A fan that changes volume may be responding to speed, mode, heat, or restricted airflow. Learn what to check for computer, portable, and ceiling fans—and when to stop and get help.

A fan often gets louder when its speed or airflow increases and quieter when it slows or enters a quieter mode. On a computer, changing noise can also track heat or restricted ventilation. Clicking, rubbing, humming, or electrical crackling—especially from a ceiling fan—can point to a different issue. The sound alone cannot identify the cause, and checks differ for a computer, portable room fan, and ceiling fan.

First identify the kind of fan

Start with what the fan is cooling or moving air through. The same change in volume can be a normal response to a setting on one device and a reason to inspect another.

  • Computer: noise may rise with heat, workload, or restricted ventilation. Keep vents clear and follow the computer maker’s instructions.
  • Portable room fan: check the selected speed and any special mode. In its Cylo51 troubleshooting guide, Vornado Air, LLC says, “Different airflow and sound levels are part of standard operation.” The guide describes its Sleep Mode as reducing airflow and operating noise; this is specific to that model, not a rule for every portable fan. Vornado Cylo51 Troubleshooting Guide
  • Ceiling fan: note whether the sound is smooth airflow or a distinct click, rub, buzz, hum, or electrical crackle. Installation, hardware, and control compatibility can affect what you hear.

Match the sound to what changes

Notice whether the sound changes at the same time as a speed indicator, selected mode, computer workload, temperature, or airflow. If volume rises and falls with speed or mode, that relationship is useful evidence. If the fan’s setting and airflow do not change but a new mechanical or electrical sound appears, check the appropriate guidance below rather than assuming the sound is simply normal.

What you notice What it may indicate What to do
Sound rises with a speed change or airflow A setting or mode may be changing fan output. Vornado documents this behavior for the Cylo51 specifically. Confirm the setting or mode and compare the sound at different settings.
Computer fan grows louder during use or with restricted airflow Heat or limited ventilation may prompt the cooling system to respond. Keep vents clear and follow the computer manufacturer’s guidance.
Ceiling-fan clicking Hunter associates clicking with loose blade or blade-holder screws. Switch the fan off and follow the model-specific manual when checking accessible components.
Ceiling-fan humming Hunter notes that some speed controls or receivers can produce humming. Check model and control compatibility using the fan’s manual or manufacturer support.
Crackling, sizzling, or a popcorn-like odor These can signal an electrical or wiring concern. Stop using the fan, turn off power, and get qualified help.

Safe checks you can make first

  1. Check the setting. Verify the speed, remote setting, or mode. Notice whether the sound changes along with the airflow.
  2. Check airflow openings. For a computer, keep ventilation openings clear and use the device manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. ASUS and Dell both address heat or restricted ventilation in their fan guidance: ASUS troubleshooting for overheating and fan issues and Dell fan troubleshooting.
  3. Look for an obvious external obstruction. For a ceiling fan, switch it off before examining accessible parts. Use the manual for your exact model; do not improvise repairs.
  4. Stop at electrical warning signs. If there is crackling, sizzling, a burning or popcorn-like smell, visible damage, or a wiring concern, stop using the fan and seek help from a qualified electrician or the manufacturer. Turn power off at the breaker before any wiring inspection. Hunter advises turning off power for crackling or sizzling and recommends a certified electrician for wiring-related repairs: Hunter’s noisy ceiling-fan guidance.

Ceiling-fan noise: check the symptom before a part

For a ceiling fan that clicks, Hunter points to loose blade or blade-holder screws as a possible cause. Follow the fan’s manual when inspecting hardware, and do so only with the fan switched off. If the fan wobbles, Hunter lists a blade-balancing kit as one possible step; it is relevant to wobble or imbalance, not a general fix for changing volume, computer noise, or electrical hum.

Humming may involve a speed control or receiver that is not compatible with the fan. Check the manual or contact the manufacturer to identify compatible components. Do not assume that oiling the fan, replacing a capacitor, or buying a controller is appropriate: serviceability and part compatibility vary by model.

When to stop troubleshooting

Do not open a computer power supply or other components unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically support the work. For ceiling-fan wiring or electrical warning signs, leave repairs to a qualified professional. If the sound persists and the safe checks do not explain it, consult the exact model’s manual or manufacturer support; general guidance cannot establish the cause of a particular fan.
