Google Home could be part of the problem, but a failed color command does not prove it is to blame. First check whether the bulb supports color and can change it in the manufacturer’s app. Then check the Google Home setup and its connection to the light maker’s service.
First check whether the bulb supports color
Google Home can change colors only on lights that support multiple colors. Check the exact bulb model’s packaging or the manufacturer’s specifications. A bulb designed for white light cannot become a color-changing bulb through a different voice command.

Compatibility matters too. Google identifies products marked Made for Google, Works with Google, or Matter-enabled as compatibility cues. Check the model and connection method against your own setup; some lights use a hub or bridge.

Test the light in its manufacturer’s app
Open the app made by the bulb’s manufacturer and try selecting a clearly different color. This separates a bulb-side problem from a Google Home control problem:

- Color does not work in the manufacturer’s app: Check the bulb’s capability, settings, power, and manufacturer guidance. If the bulb is white-only, or the manufacturer confirms a fault, Google Home cannot fix it.
- Color works in the manufacturer’s app: The bulb can change color, so investigate the connection between Google Home and the manufacturer’s service.
Check setup and network connections
Confirm that the light, Google speaker or display, phone, and any required bridge are powered, set up, and online. Where the setup uses Wi-Fi, check that the speaker or display and lights are on the expected network. Also make sure the Google Home app is using the account linked to the Google device.
If a bridge is part of the system, verify that it is powered and connected as expected. A light that is offline or not correctly set up may not respond even when its model supports color.

Try a specific color command
For a light with multiple colors, Google documents the command: “Hey Google, turn [light name] green.” Use the exact name of one light rather than assuming every light in a room has the same capabilities.

If the command still fails but the manufacturer’s app changes the color, check the third-party service link in Google Home. Google’s troubleshooting guidance points to relinking a third-party account when connected lights are missing or cannot be reached. Relink only when the symptoms point to that connection; it will not add color capability to a white-only bulb.

Choose between repairing the connection and replacing the bulb

Community replies sometimes suggest syncing devices or power-cycling equipment. These are community-recommended steps, not guaranteed fixes. If you try them, do so after checking the bulb’s capability and app behavior, and consult the manufacturer’s instructions for safely restarting its equipment.
