Is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn a Promising Mass Effect-Style RPG for Newcomers?

Osiris Reborn has Mass Effect-like combat and crew systems, but mixed previews leave its storytelling and final quality unproven. Newcomers can follow its mercenary-and-conspiracy premise without prior knowledge of The Expanse.

Yes—with a substantial pre-release caveat. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn has the recognizable ingredients of a Mass Effect-style action RPG: third-person cover combat, companions who help in battle, a crew to lead, and choices with consequences. You do not need to know The Expanse to understand its basic setup, but neither the premise nor early previews can guarantee that the finished game will deliver Mass Effect-level storytelling. As of October 7, 2026, the game remains in development, and hands-on impressions disagree about how well its parts come together.

What is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn?

Owlcat Games is developing and publishing The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as a single-player, third-person action RPG set in The Expanse universe. The player creates a captain with an Earther, Martian, or Belter background and works as a Pinkwater Security mercenary. A shore leave on Eros becomes a lockdown and draws the crew into a wider conspiracy.

The game’s action and crew systems are the clearest basis for the Mass Effect comparison. Steam describes cover-focused gunplay, abilities, two companions accompanying the player in the field, support from other crew members, and real-time commands. Xbox Wire also highlights companion “Exploits” used in combat and decisions that affect missions. These are announced features; their depth and execution in the final game remain to be seen. Xbox Wire’s overview explains the combat and companion pitch.

Why does it look like Mass Effect?

The comparison is a useful shorthand for the format, not a promise of equivalent quality. Both games invite players to think about cover shooting alongside companion support, crew relationships, and consequential decisions. For Osiris Reborn, those similarities are supported by the announced systems and preview footage—not by evidence that its writing, characters, or role-playing choices will match Mass Effect.

#1 Best Overall
Unstable Games Here to Slay Base Card Game
  • Fast-Paced Adventure Game: Enjoy 30-60 minutes of fantasy-themed strategy as you build a party and face off against monsters, great for game night with friends, teens, and adults.
  • Build Your Party: Collect heroes, slay monsters, and use items and magic to create winning strategies and become a hero in this role-playing card game.
  • Easy to Learn Gameplay: Easy-to-learn mechanics make this card game ideal for adventuring with families, friends, and on game nights with ages 10 and up.
  • High-Quality Components: Includes illustrated cards, custom dice, and smooth gameplay elements that make each session engaging and replayable. A great pick for fantasy and tabletop fans.
  • Expand Your Game Collection: Grow your lineup of card games with expansion packs like Warriors and Druids, Berserkers and Necromancers, Here to Sleigh Holiday, and the Here to Slay Vinyl Mini Figure Blind Boxes.

It helps to judge the game across separate parts rather than treating “Mass Effect successor” as a single test:

  • Combat: Does cover shooting feel satisfying, and do companion abilities and commands add meaningful tactical choices?
  • Role-playing: Do dialogue and decisions give the captain a distinct identity and produce consequences across the story?
  • Crew: Do relationships and characterization make the crew matter beyond their combat utility?
  • Presentation and pacing: Do the writing, cinematics, and mission flow make the action and story feel cohesive?

Official descriptions establish that several of these systems are planned. They do not yet establish how much role-playing depth the full campaign offers.

What have previews said about the game?

Preview impressions are mixed, and both reports concern in-development builds rather than the final release.

PC Gamer’s April 2026 preview

After playing a demo, Robin Valentine described the core combat as solid but not especially inspiring and noted that the mission offered limited role-playing context. The preview was cautiously positive overall, concluding: “So, too soon to declare the second coming of Mass Effect just yet, but Osiris Reborn is definitely promising.” That is an assessment of the preview build, not a review of the finished game. Read PC Gamer’s hands-on preview.

TechRadar’s October 2026 preview

Tom Regan’s October 3 hands-on report was more critical: after a 90-minute demo, TechRadar found the experience underwhelming and questioned whether its writing, cinematic presentation, and action could meet the standard set by Mass Effect. That reaction is one preview writer’s response to one demo, not a settled consensus. Read TechRadar’s hands-on report.

Together, the previews suggest a game with a legible premise and promising systems whose storytelling and moment-to-moment execution still need to prove themselves. The disagreement is a reason to keep expectations measured, not a verdict on the finished RPG.

Can you play it without knowing The Expanse?

The available official descriptions give newcomers a straightforward entry point: a mercenary captain, a crew, a crisis on Eros, and a conspiracy spanning the solar system. Xbox Wire identifies The Expanse as both a book and television franchise, but neither it nor the Steam listing says that prior knowledge is required. The sources do not establish a formal continuity or canon guarantee, so it is safest to treat the game as set in the shared universe without assuming exactly how it connects to every existing story.

When and where is it planned to release?

As of October 7, 2026, Steam lists a planned Q2 2027 release, while Owlcat and Xbox Wire describe the window as spring 2027. No exact launch date is established in these sources. The announced platforms and access plans are:

Platform or access Announced plan
PC Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG
Consoles Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5
Subscription Planned day-one Game Pass availability; Xbox Wire specifies Game Pass Ultimate
Release timing Planned for Q2 2027 on Steam; also described by Owlcat and Xbox Wire as spring 2027

These are announced plans, not guarantees that timing, platforms, or subscription availability cannot change. Steam currently lists the game as not yet available and provides a wishlist option. Check the Owlcat’s official news for current announcements.

A closed beta was announced for April 22, 2026, for eligible Founders who purchased the Miller’s Pack or Collector’s Edition through the official site. Owlcat said it would include a full mission and be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. The reviewed announcements do not establish whether those packs or beta access remain available on October 7, 2026, so check the current official terms rather than assuming you can still buy in. Owlcat’s announcement page is the official place to check for updates.

Should newcomers keep it on their radar?

If you want a crew-based sci-fi action RPG and are drawn to cover combat, companion abilities, and decisions with consequences, Osiris Reborn has a credible pitch—and its premise is understandable without franchise knowledge. If what you want is proven Mass Effect-caliber writing or a finished-game recommendation, the evidence is not there yet. The game is unreleased, and its current previews range from cautiously optimistic to distinctly disappointed.
