A Mother’s Brain: What Neuroscience Says About Pregnancy and the Maternal Brain

A Mother’s Brain: The New Science of the Neuro-Maternal Revolution is Susana Carmona’s book about the neuroscience of motherhood, published by MIT Press on October 6, 2026. The science behind its subject points to real brain plasticity during pregnancy and postpartum—but structural changes seen on scans are not evidence of brain damage, reduced intelligence, or a guaranteed caregiving benefit.

What is A Mother’s Brain about?

Susana Carmona’s A Mother’s Brain: The New Science of the Neuro-Maternal Revolution is a 192-page hardcover from MIT Press, ISBN 9780262054782. The publisher describes it as a synthesis of research on pregnancy-related changes in hormones, the immune system, and the brain. That description identifies the book’s scope; it is not independent validation of every scientific claim in it. MIT Press’s catalog page lists the book and retailers.

Does pregnancy change the brain?

Research reviews describe pregnancy and the postpartum period as times of pronounced neurobiological change, including structural and functional changes in the human brain. Human imaging studies have reported differences in gray-matter measures, but results depend on when participants were scanned, who was studied, and what was measured. A change in volume or cortical thickness is a measurement—not, by itself, evidence of damage, neuron loss, lower intelligence, or a specific change in behavior.

Animal studies provide more detailed evidence about possible cellular mechanisms. Those findings can help frame questions about human biology, but they should not be presented as mechanisms proven in human mothers. Reviews also stress that human evidence is more limited and that the causes and functions of observed changes remain active research questions. Pawluski and colleagues’ review and Barba-Müller and colleagues’ review discuss these distinctions.

What did one postpartum brain-imaging study find?

A 2022 study compared 78 healthy women scanned one to four days after childbirth with 40 nulliparous controls. It reported regional differences in gray matter and cortical thickness. The researchers did not find that the measured early postpartum gray-matter volume predicted mother–infant attachment scores at three or 12 weeks. They said longitudinal research would be needed to establish the trajectory and biological function of the changes. The study in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience is one result at a particular postpartum time point, not a universal account of every mother’s brain.

Is “mommy brain” real?

The phrase “mommy brain” is too broad to describe the varied changes involved in becoming a parent. Brain plasticity does not establish a uniform cognitive deficit, and the imaging findings described above do not show that a structural difference means poorer thinking. Individual experiences can vary; a scan finding alone cannot determine how someone is functioning or feeling.

Matrescence is a term sometimes used for the transition of becoming a mother. It can help frame motherhood as a major life transition, but it is not a medical diagnosis.

How do brain changes relate to caregiving and mental health?

Reviews describe overlap between brain systems implicated in caregiving and those involved in reward, salience, emotion regulation, and social cognition. These are proposed relationships across systems, not a settled explanation in which one brain region determines attachment or caregiving ability. The 2022 study’s failure to find that early postpartum gray-matter volume predicted later attachment ratings is a concrete reason to distinguish association from causation.

Brain plasticity is relevant to peripartum mental health, and research reviews discuss both possible adaptation and vulnerability. But imaging results do not diagnose a mental-health condition or establish that a brain difference caused one. A brain scan should not be treated as a stand-alone assessment of an individual’s mental health.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say

  • Supported: Pregnancy and postpartum are associated with neurobiological change, and human imaging studies have reported structural differences.
  • Still uncertain: The precise function and trajectory of those changes, how consistently they occur across people, and how particular findings relate causally to caregiving or mental health.
  • Not established by a scan difference alone: Brain damage, neuron loss, reduced intelligence, a diagnosis, or a guaranteed improvement in attachment or caregiving.
  • Different kinds of evidence: Human imaging documents measured patterns; animal research can investigate mechanisms in greater detail. One type should not be treated as interchangeable with the other.
