In SlashGear’s ranking, the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP leads at a stated 185 mph, ahead of the 2006 GTO at 170 mph and the 2002 Firebird Trans Am WS6 at 162 mph. Those figures are not a uniform set of independently verified test results: the list mixes different kinds of evidence, and its top-ranked G8 figure is described as governor-limited without a comparable test account. The ranking below preserves SlashGear’s order and labels the numbers as its reported figures, not a definitive apples-to-apples speed test.
How to read this ranking
Top speed can mean a manufacturer claim, an instrumented road test, a speedometer reading, a governor-limited maximum or a racing record. The sources behind this list do not establish one consistent method for all eleven cars. SlashGear’s figures are therefore useful as a guide to the cars it places among Pontiac’s fastest, but they should not be treated as a controlled comparison. Its article was updated August 30, 2026. SlashGear’s ranking is the source for the order and reported speeds below.

These are top-speed figures, not acceleration rankings. SlashGear also discusses acceleration and quarter-mile performance, but neither is a substitute for terminal speed.

1973 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 455 Super Duty — 104 mph
SlashGear lists 104 mph. Its accompanying text says a 1973 test reached 103.56 mph with a full tank and a stock automatic transmission. The rounded list figure and the more precise test figure describe the same reported result, not two separate measurements.

2009 Pontiac G8 GXP — 185 mph
SlashGear puts the G8 GXP first at a stated 185 mph and describes the speed as governor-limited. The available sources do not independently corroborate that exact result, so it is best understood as the article’s reported figure rather than a verified test result.
What separate Firebird tests establish
Historical road-test references offer firmer evidence for certain Firebirds, while illustrating why model year, engine, transmission and test source matter. Jalopnik recounts the following results from period tests:
- 1979 Trans Am: 132 mph. Car and Driver tested a car with a 400-cubic-inch V8, four-speed manual and 3.23 final drive.
- 1989 Turbo Trans Am: 162 mph radar peak. Motor Trend recorded that peak by radar. Jalopnik also notes a separate Car and Driver result of 153 mph.
- Fourth-generation 30th Anniversary Firebird: 163 mph. Car and Driver’s result, as recounted by Jalopnik, was electronically limited at that speed.
These are distinct test accounts, not interchangeable numbers. In particular, the 163 mph result for a 30th Anniversary car does not establish the top speed of a 2002 WS6 or a 1998 Trans Am. Jalopnik also discusses a reported 206 mph for the Tojan, but flags it as unverified and not stock; it does not belong in a production-car comparison. Jalopnik’s Firebird generation comparison recounts the tests and their qualifications.

Why the Bonneville record is a different category
A modified race car can post a much higher speed than a factory road car, but that does not make it the fastest production Pontiac. Banks Power reports that its 1987 Trans Am GTA was extensively prepared for Bonneville, including twin turbochargers and a 454-cubic-inch engine. The project history reports a 267.618 mph two-way average and a 277 mph timed top speed; a separate Banks account gives a 283 mph terminal speed under rainy conditions. Those figures refer to different measurements and conditions, not the same factory-car top speed.
Bonneville record runs use a return run: the speed from one run down the course is averaged with the run back. Banks reports a 267.618 mph two-way average for its 1986 result and a 268.033 mph record for the 1987 run. The two-way average is the relevant record-style comparison; the timed or terminal peak is a different measure. See Banks Power’s account of the Bonneville car and record method and its Trans Am GTA project history.
