Short answer: a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) and a recurring deposit (RD) both let you contribute regularly, but they are fundamentally different. An SIP is a periodic-investment method for buying units in a selected mutual-fund scheme, so its value moves with the scheme’s net asset value (NAV) and can fall. An RD is a bank term-deposit contract whose interest, maturity value and early-closure conditions are set by the bank’s terms. Neither is automatically “better”; the appropriate choice depends on your time horizon, tolerance for loss, need for access, costs and after-tax outcome.
This comparison applies to India and focuses on ordinary open-ended mutual-fund SIPs and bank RDs. Check the current scheme information document and the bank’s deposit disclosure before investing.

What an SIP and an RD actually are
SIP: a method applied to a mutual-fund scheme
The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) defines a Systematic Investment Plan as a method in which a fixed amount is invested in a mutual-fund scheme at fixed intervals, such as monthly, instead of investing a lump sum. The SIP itself is not a separate guaranteed-return product. Each instalment purchases units of the chosen scheme at the applicable NAV.
That distinction matters. The contribution date and amount may be predictable, but the value of the units is not. A debt, hybrid, equity or other scheme has its own portfolio, risk level, expenses and dealing rules. The result of the SIP therefore depends on the scheme and the path taken by its NAV, not merely on the fact that the contribution was monthly.

RD: a recurring bank term deposit
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) treats recurring and cumulative deposits as forms of term deposit: money is committed for a stated period under the bank’s deposit contract. You pay the agreed instalment schedule, and the bank applies the interest and maturity rules disclosed for that product.
An RD is therefore a deposit agreement rather than a market investment. The bank’s quoted rate, instalment frequency, maturity calculation, missed-payment rules and premature-closure policy govern the outcome. Those terms can differ between institutions and products, so one bank’s RD cannot be used as a universal example for all RDs.
Core differences at a glance
| Question | SIP in a mutual-fund scheme | Bank recurring deposit |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A periodic contribution method for investing in a selected mutual-fund scheme; units are bought at applicable NAVs. | A recurring or cumulative bank deposit classified by RBI as a term deposit. |
| What drives value? | The scheme’s NAV, portfolio holdings, expenses, distributions and market conditions. | The bank’s stated interest rate, instalment schedule and maturity rules. |
| Can principal fall? | Yes. Mutual-fund schemes are not guaranteed or assured-return products; loss of principal is possible. | The applicable outcome follows the deposit contract. Do not assume identical conditions across banks; read the institution’s terms. |
| How is the return described? | Market-linked and scheme-dependent. Past performance does not assure future performance. | Interest and maturity value are determined by the bank’s disclosed terms; no single current rate applies to every RD. |
| Access before maturity | Open-ended units are generally redeemable on business days, subject to scheme rules, settlement timing and any exit load. | Premature closure may be available, but the bank may reduce interest or apply a disclosed penalty. |
| Main checks before opening | Scheme category, risk, portfolio, expense ratio, exit load, redemption rules and tax treatment for your holding period. | Quoted rate, maturity calculation, instalment and missed-payment rules, premature-closure policy and applicable tax treatment. |
Risk: market exposure versus deposit terms
Why an SIP can lose money
Mutual-fund NAVs fluctuate. When the securities held by a scheme fall in value, the NAV can fall and the value of your accumulated units can be below the amount invested. A SIP spreads purchases over time, which can mean buying more units when prices are lower and fewer when prices are higher, but it does not remove market risk or guarantee a profit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRisk is determined by the selected scheme. An equity-oriented scheme, a bond-oriented scheme and a hybrid scheme do not carry the same exposure. Before setting up an SIP, read the scheme’s risk information, investment objective, portfolio composition and relevant charges. The word “SIP” alone tells you nothing about whether the underlying portfolio is conservative or highly volatile.
What “safer” means for an RD
An RD’s predictability comes from its contract: the bank states the interest and maturity terms, and the product is not repriced each trading day like a mutual-fund NAV. That does not mean every deposit offer has the same conditions. The institution, tenure, rate, account rules and early-withdrawal provisions all matter.

RBI rules allow banks to set penalties for premature withdrawal and require the applicable penal rate to be disclosed. Verify the current RBI directions and the bank’s own product disclosure rather than relying on a generic statement that all RDs are penalty-free or identical.
How to compare risk honestly
Do not compare an SIP’s possible market loss with an RD’s quoted interest as though they were two versions of the same product. They expose you to different uncertainties. For an SIP, ask how much NAV volatility and potential principal loss you can tolerate. For an RD, ask whether the bank’s terms provide the predictability you need and what happens if you must close early.
Returns: why there is no universal winner
SIP returns are not a fixed rate
An SIP does not have one promised annual return. Your result depends on the scheme’s NAV at every purchase and at redemption, the time each instalment remained invested, scheme expenses, any exit load and the tax treatment that applies to your holding period. Historical returns can help describe what happened in the past, but AMFI’s risk disclosure makes clear that mutual-fund schemes are not guaranteed or assured-return products.
RD returns depend on the bank and schedule
An RD’s maturity value is calculated using the bank’s stated rate and the timing of instalments under that product. The rate may vary by tenure, depositor category or other conditions. A current rate for one bank is not evidence of the rate offered by another, and this comparison does not assert a universal current rate.
Why “which gives higher returns?” is an incomplete question
A meaningful comparison must specify at least:
- the same contribution amount and dates;
- the investment or deposit period;
- the exact mutual-fund category and scheme assumptions;
- the RD bank’s quoted rate and maturity schedule;
- scheme expenses, exit load and any bank penalty;
- tax treatment for the investor and holding period; and
- whether the SIP figure is an illustration or an actual historical result.
Without those inputs, saying that SIPs always outperform RDs—or that RDs always do better—creates a false certainty. A market-return assumption is not a forecast, and an illustrative SIP value must never be presented as guaranteed.

Liquidity: withdrawal permission, timing and cost
How quickly an open-ended SIP investment can reach you
For an open-ended mutual-fund scheme, you generally redeem units rather than “withdraw an SIP.” You can stop future instalments separately from redeeming units already held. AMFI’s general explanation says settlement can range from the next business day for liquid or overnight schemes to roughly three or four days for other schemes, depending on the scheme and applicable settlement conditions.
Those are general ranges, not a promise for every fund or every day. The scheme’s documents and the applicable cut-off and settlement rules determine when the redemption proceeds are credited. An exit load may also reduce the amount if units are redeemed within the scheme’s specified period.
How an RD’s early access works
An RD is designed to run to maturity, but the bank may permit premature closure under its disclosed policy. Closing early can mean receiving less interest than the original maturity calculation and may involve a penal rate or other charge. The exact consequence is product-specific.
Before opening an RD, find the section that explains premature withdrawal, partial withdrawal if offered, recalculation of interest, and any minimum holding condition. Do not treat “can be closed early” as equivalent to instant, cost-free liquidity.
Liquidity questions to answer before choosing
- Could you need the money on a particular date, or can the contribution remain untouched until maturity?
- Is next-business-day access relevant, or would a three-to-four-business-day settlement still meet the goal?
- Would an exit load or premature-RD penalty materially reduce the amount you need?
- Are you stopping only future SIP instalments, or do you also need to redeem existing units?
- Does the selected scheme or bank impose conditions that make the apparent access less flexible than expected?
Costs and tax: compare the net result
SIP costs to inspect
Check the mutual-fund scheme’s expense ratio and any exit load. Expenses are reflected in the scheme’s NAV, while an exit load can apply when units are redeemed under the scheme’s stated conditions. The category and holding period can also affect the tax treatment. A complete tax answer requires the current rules and your circumstances; do not infer the tax result from the SIP label alone.

RD costs and tax checks
For an RD, review the bank’s quoted interest, maturity calculation and premature-closure policy. A penalty or lower rate on early closure changes the effective outcome. Tax treatment must also be checked under the current rules applicable to you; this comparison does not establish one universal RD tax result.
Use after-tax yield, not the headline number
SEBI advises investors to compare risks and expected yields after adjusting for tax, while also considering safety, returns and liquidity. Apply that test to both products. A higher pre-tax figure may not produce the higher amount you can actually use, and a lower-volatility option may be more suitable for a goal where a loss at the withdrawal date would be unacceptable.

When an RD may fit the question you are asking
An RD deserves consideration when your priority is a known deposit structure, a defined maturity date and terms you can inspect in advance. It may be easier to plan around a stated bank rate than around a fluctuating NAV. You still need to verify the bank’s financial-product terms, early-closure consequences and tax treatment.
When an SIP may fit the question you are asking
An SIP may be worth comparing when you can accept market fluctuations and want exposure to the return potential of a suitable mutual-fund scheme over a time horizon that matches that scheme. The method encourages regular investing, but it does not make a volatile scheme conservative. Select the scheme based on its objective, portfolio and risk level—not merely because the instalment amount is convenient.
When neither should be selected without more work
Pause before deciding if the goal has no defined date, the money may be needed immediately, the possible loss is unacceptable, or you have not checked costs and taxes. In those cases, identify the required safety, access and time horizon first, then compare products that actually meet those constraints.

A practical SIP-versus-RD decision process
- Define the goal and deadline. Write down the amount needed, the date and whether the date is flexible. A short, fixed deadline leaves less room to recover from an adverse market move.
- Set your loss tolerance. Decide whether seeing the invested value below the contributions would make you abandon the plan. If that possibility is unacceptable, a market-linked SIP may not match the requirement.
- Specify the access requirement. Separate stopping future SIP instalments from redeeming existing units. For an RD, identify whether early closure is allowed, how interest is recalculated and what penalty applies.
- Collect the exact documents. For the SIP, obtain the scheme information document, risk information, expense ratio, exit-load schedule, redemption and settlement details. For the RD, obtain the bank’s rate sheet, maturity illustration, instalment rules and premature-closure disclosure.
- Compare like with like. Use the same contribution dates and period. Use the actual RD rate and schedule. If you model an SIP, label the return assumption as hypothetical and non-guaranteed; do not call it a forecast.
- Adjust for costs and tax. Include scheme expenses, exit load, any RD penalty and the current tax treatment relevant to your holding period and status.
- Stress-test the decision. Ask what happens if the SIP NAV is lower when the goal arrives, if you need the money sooner, or if the RD must be closed early. Choose only after the less favorable but plausible outcome still fits the goal.
- Review rather than automate blindly. A standing instruction can make contributions regular, but it does not replace checking whether the scheme, bank terms and goal remain appropriate.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling an SIP a guaranteed monthly-return plan
The regular instalment is guaranteed by your instruction, not the investment result. NAVs can rise or fall, and principal can be lost.
Assuming every RD pays the same rate
Rates, tenure rules and penalties are product-specific. Compare the actual bank disclosures rather than a generic RD table.
Confusing liquidity with a zero-cost exit
Open-ended units may be redeemable, but settlement takes time and an exit load may apply. An RD may permit premature closure, but the interest or penalty can change the proceeds.

Historical performance describes an earlier period and does not assure future results. Any forward-looking number must be identified as an assumption, not a prediction.
Ignoring the scheme behind the SIP
The SIP label does not reveal whether the portfolio is equity, debt, hybrid or another category. Read the scheme’s risk and portfolio information.
Comparing before-tax figures only
SEBI’s framework calls for comparing expected yields after tax and considering safety, returns and liquidity together. A headline rate is only one input.
Bottom line: choose the trade-off, not the label
An SIP offers regular access to a chosen mutual-fund scheme, with market-linked value, scheme-specific risk and potentially faster access than a maturity-bound deposit when the scheme permits redemption. An RD offers a bank-defined deposit contract, with interest and maturity terms that are more predictable but with early-closure conditions that can reduce the proceeds.
