A browser restriction can stop an extension on certain domains; a local file may require a separate permission. If a file downloads but is incomplete, or downloads successfully but will not open, those are different problems with different fixes.
Check whether the browser is blocking the page
Browsers prevent extensions from running on some protected domains for security. The SingleFileZ FAQ gives the general explanation that “For security purposes, browsers block web extensions on certain domains.” Chrome Web Store and Mozilla add-on pages are examples; other Mozilla domains may also be affected. If SingleFileZ fails only on an extension-store page, try saving an ordinary webpage as a comparison. Do not try to bypass the browser’s protection. SingleFileZ FAQ; SingleFile troubleshooting.

Check whether the page is a local file
If the page you want to process is already saved on your device, Chromium-based browsers may require the extension’s “Allow access to file URLs” permission. Open the browser’s extension management page, find SingleFileZ, and enable that permission if available. This setting concerns local files; it does not remove restrictions on protected websites. Try the maintainer’s general troubleshooting sequence
When the cause is unclear, test in this order, changing one thing at a time:

- Try saving in an incognito or private window. The browser may require you to allow the extension in private mode; the menu label and behavior vary by browser.
- Reset SingleFile’s options to their defaults.
- Restart the browser and retry.
- Disable other extensions and test again. If that fixes it, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a conflict.
- If the issue persists, report it with a short description and reproducible steps.

If saving is slow, reduce processing work selectively
SingleFileZ’s default options favor smaller saved pages, and some optimizations can take extra time and CPU. Its FAQ suggests trying these settings:

Change one option at a time and compare the resulting file. The FAQ also mentions disabling frame removal or deferred-image saving, but warns that doing so can leave some frames or images out. Use those settings only when you have checked the output and accept the trade-off. SingleFileZ FAQ.

Refererheader for image requests. SingleFile documents an option to pass that header after this error; check the current option label in the version you use. - Canvas images or video snapshots absent: browser security restrictions can prevent capturing their image representations.
- Maps, carousels, or other features do not work: scripts are removed by default, so interactive behavior may not survive in the saved page.
- Frames or deferred images absent: check whether the corresponding removal or deferred-image settings are enabled before changing them.

If the saved file will not open, check its format
First establish whether the download completed. If it did, but the result will not open, the issue may be the file format or the browser’s handling of local files rather than the save operation. SingleFileZ’s FAQ documents special requirements for its self-extracting ZIP format, including JavaScript being enabled and Chrome’s restrictions on opening such files from the filesystem. It describes different behavior for Firefox and Safari, but these browser-specific details can change. Check the current SingleFile FAQ and its File format settings before following old version-specific steps; serving the file from a web server can avoid filesystem restrictions mentioned in the FAQ. Why newer guidance points to SingleFile
The SingleFileZ repository states, “SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile.” It directs users who want self-extracting files to SingleFile’s File format option and says existing settings can be imported. As a result, current guidance may be under SingleFile rather than a separately maintained SingleFileZ project. SingleFileZ repository.
