Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For most news articles, use SingleFile’s normal full-page save with its default cleanup settings, and wait until the article and any images you want have loaded. SingleFile saves the captured page as one HTML file in your browser’s download folder by default. There is no universal news-specific preset: adjust settings only when a particular site or an especially slow save gives you a reason.
Recommended settings for a typical news article
- Save the full page. Use SingleFile’s standard page-save workflow rather than selecting only the article text. That keeps useful page structure with the article. SingleFile also supports saving selected content, frames, and multiple tabs; selected-content saving is appropriate when you specifically want a cropped excerpt instead of the complete page. SingleFile project README
- Wait for the content you need. Check that the article body and relevant images have appeared before saving. SingleFile can load deferred images and iframes, but the project does not specify one wait time that suits every site. The saved file reflects what was available to the capture process. SingleFile features
- Keep default cleanup enabled to start. The FAQ says the defaults are optimized to produce small pages. This is a sensible starting point for ordinary reading copies. SingleFile FAQ
- Save the single HTML file locally. The browser’s configured download folder is the default destination. For a personal offline reference, no remote storage setup is needed. SingleFile project README
Adjust settings when a save is slow or incomplete
If processing is slow
Try disabling HTML content > remove hidden elements and Stylesheets > remove unused styles. The SingleFile FAQ suggests these changes to reduce processing work and CPU use. They may retain more page content and styling, so the resulting file can differ from the compact default output. Disabling frame removal or deferred-image saving may also speed processing, but could leave some resources out. SingleFile FAQ

If an interactive element matters
SingleFile removes scripts by default because scripts can alter rendering and may not work offline. If a specific article depends on an interactive element, the FAQ suggests unblocking scripts and optionally retaining hidden elements, unused styles, and raw page content. Treat this as a site-specific exception, not a general recommendation: preserving scripts does not guarantee that the feature will work without the original site. SingleFile FAQ
If images or embedded frames are missing
Wait for the relevant content to appear, and check the options for loading deferred images and iframes before saving. These resources may depend on the page finishing its own loading process; a setting cannot preserve content that was never available to the capture. If speed matters more than completeness, disabling deferred-image saving is a documented tradeoff, not a fix for preserving every image. SingleFile features

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Use profiles for sites with repeatable quirks
When you have found that a particular publisher consistently needs different settings, save that combination as a profile and configure it to be selected automatically by URL. This avoids changing settings for every article on that site. SingleFile documents profiles, but does not provide a prebuilt profile specifically for news articles. SingleFile features
Choose a format and destination for your archive
SingleFile supports a single HTML file as well as a self-extracting ZIP, and documents destinations including GitHub, Amazon S3, Google Drive, and WebDAV. For a straightforward reading copy, the default local download is simplest. Remote destinations or a separately backed-up drive can help organize a growing collection, but neither is required. Know what an HTML snapshot does—and does not—preserve
A saved file is a snapshot of what the browser extension captured, not a guarantee of the site’s server-side behavior, every live feature, or future revisions to the page. In particular, scripts may not work offline. The FAQ also notes that browser security blocks extensions on certain domains. SingleFile FAQ
SingleFile’s FAQ distinguishes personal page capture from professional web archiving: it says SingleFile is not a tool used by professionals to archive content on the web, especially in academia, and points to tools based on the WARC specification. If you need an archival workflow rather than a convenient personal copy, use a WARC-oriented tool instead of treating a saved HTML page as a formal web archive. SingleFile FAQ

Or skip the browser setup:
If your goal is a screenshot or PDF rather than a self-contained HTML copy, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request capture. Its cleanup can accept cookie and consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. It also has an MCP server for AI agents. The service includes 1,000 screenshots a month free without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For example, save a screenshot of a news article as WebP with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.reuters.com/ -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. This captures an image, not SingleFile’s editable, self-contained HTML archive. ScreenshotNeo is an alternative when a cleaned screenshot or PDF is what you need. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
