Choose WebScrapBook when you want an organized collection with hierarchical folders, notes, editing, and indexed search—especially if its backend-supported features suit your setup. Both capture browser-rendered pages; neither is shown here to preserve an entire website or guarantee that every interactive feature will keep working offline.
What kind of archive do you need?
“Archive a website” can mean saving one page as it appears in a browser, or preserving a multi-page site, its interactions, and how it changes over time. The documented focus of both SingleFile and WebScrapBook is page capture, not a demonstrated full-site crawl or complete record of a site’s behavior.

The key question is how you want to retrieve what you save: as an individual file you can open or share, or as part of a managed, searchable scrapbook. That distinction is more useful than asking which tool is universally better.

SingleFile vs WebScrapBook at a glance
| Need | Better starting point | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| One self-contained HTML page to open or share | SingleFile | It is built around single-HTML output, and its project site says saved pages can be viewed offline without the extension. That does not guarantee live-site interactivity offline. |
| Capture several tabs, selected content, or repeated URL batches | SingleFile | The project documents tab and selection capture, annotations, autosave, and batch URL saving. |
| A tree of saved pages, notes, and full-text search | WebScrapBook | It documents hierarchical collections, notes, editing, and indexing. Some functions require the collaborating PyWebScrapBook backend. |
| Choose among folder, HTZ, MAFF, or single-HTML output | WebScrapBook | Its capture settings also let you choose which page portions and resources to save. |
| Access a collection remotely or distribute a static index | WebScrapBook, if its backend or static-site workflow fits | Remote access and static index are documented; backend requirements apply to all or part of marked features. |
| Preserve full interactivity or an entire site’s request history | Neither is established for this purpose | SingleFile documents script-related limitations, and the available product descriptions do not establish complete site-level preservation for either tool. |
When SingleFile is the better fit
SingleFile is a browser extension and command-line tool for saving a complete page and its resources into one HTML file; it also supports a self-extracting ZIP format. Its project site says the saved page can be viewed offline without installing the extension. This makes it a natural option for keeping a discrete page, sharing a snapshot, or reading saved material without maintaining a separate scrapbook server.

Useful capture and save options
- Save the current page, selected content, or a selected frame; capture multiple tabs.
- Add annotations and use autosave or batch URL saving for repeated captures.
- Choose external destinations such as Google Drive, GitHub, Amazon S3, or WebDAV, and use features such as bookmarks, profiles, and deferred-image loading.
- Check the current extension store listing and settings for the browser and destination you plan to use; availability can vary.
The project README lists Chrome, Firefox (desktop and mobile), Edge, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Waterfox, Yandex Browser, and Opera compatibility. The project site names Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. These lists are not a guarantee that every feature or store installation is available on every operating system or browser version.
What offline viewing does—and does not—mean
SingleFile’s FAQ says scripts are removed by default because they can alter rendering and may not work offline. That can affect dynamic maps, carousels, and expandable or folding titles. Settings can be changed, but enabling scripts cannot make server-dependent functions work without their required services. Resource capture can also be affected by sites that require a Referer header.

The SingleFile project FAQ says the tool is not intended for professional web archiving, particularly in academic settings, and points to WARC-based tools for that purpose. That is the project’s guidance, not an independent standards-body assessment. If you need a formal record of site history or a full crawl, do not treat a standalone page snapshot as a substitute.
When WebScrapBook is the better fit
WebScrapBook is designed around capturing pages for later retrieval, organization, annotation, and editing. Instead of treating every capture only as a separate file, it can organize saved pages in hierarchical scrapbook trees and support notes and full-text search across fields such as title, text, comments, source URL, and timestamps.

Capture and archive formats
WebScrapBook can save to folders, ZIP-based HTZ or MAFF archives, or single HTML. Its configurable capture settings can include or omit images, audio, video, fonts, frames, styles, and scripts. It can capture selected areas, page source before script processing, or bookmarks. Choose the format and resource settings based on how you plan to retrieve the material: a folder or archive is different from one portable HTML file.
HTZ and MAFF files can be viewed with the built-in archive viewer, PyWebScrapBook, or other assistant tools; the listing also says they can be unzipped and opened through the index page.

Know which features depend on a backend
The extension listing marks some capabilities as requiring the collaborating PyWebScrapBook backend. In particular, do not assume remote access, collaboration, or every collection feature is turnkey with the extension alone. Check the feature notes and backend setup requirements for the exact workflow you want before choosing it.

How to choose
- Pick SingleFile if your main outcome is an individual HTML snapshot that is easy to carry, open, or share, and you do not need a managed collection.
- Pick WebScrapBook if your main outcome is a structured archive with notes, annotations, editing, and searchable retrieval, and you are comfortable with any backend setup needed for the features you want.
- Check the page itself. For sites with maps, carousels, login-dependent content, or other dynamic behavior, decide whether a static snapshot is enough. Neither choice should be assumed to preserve the live site exactly.
- Check the preservation requirement. If the need is a multi-page crawl, a durable historical record, or professional web archiving, these page-capture descriptions do not establish that either tool meets it.
ScreenshotNeo as a separate capture option
If your need is to capture a page as an image or PDF through an API rather than maintain a browser-based archive, try ScreenshotNeo first: its stated distinction is that it removes consent banners and other overlays before capture and bills only clean shots. It is a screenshot service, not a replacement for SingleFile or WebScrapBook’s HTML and collection workflows.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a WebP image:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
