In Save Page WE’s options, enable Merge duplicate CSS images. The extension describes this option as a way “to reduce the saved file size.” It applies to duplicate images referenced by CSS; it is not a general image-compression setting.

How to configure Save Page WE for a smaller file
- Open Save Page WE’s options and turn on Merge duplicate CSS images.
- Choose Basic Items if you need the leanest preset and can accept its omissions.
- If Basic Items leaves out something important, choose Custom Items and select only the additional resource classes you need. For example, add all HTML images if images that are not currently displayed matter to you.
- Save the page, open the resulting HTML file, and check that the content you expect to use offline is present.
Why one saved page can be much larger than another
Save Page WE stores the current HTML and referenced resources in a single .html file. External stylesheets become internal stylesheets; frame contents and external scripts use data URIs or srcdoc; and binary resources such as images, fonts, audio, and video are embedded as Base64 data URIs. Including more resource types can therefore increase the amount of data in the file.

The documentation says CSS images referenced repeatedly within a frame are stored once in that frame, while CSS fonts and HTML images, audio, and video are stored once for each reference. That makes resource selection and duplicate CSS image merging relevant, but it does not establish a predictable file-size reduction for any particular page.
Preserve what you need for offline use
- Images: Basic Items includes currently displayed HTML and CSS images, but not necessarily every image in the page. Custom Items can add all HTML images or all CSS images.
- Audio, video, and embedded files: Standard Items includes these classes; with Custom Items, add only those you need.
- Lazy-loaded content: Save Page WE has separate options to scroll or shrink a page to load content and to load lazy images in existing content. Enabling them may capture more content and increase the saved file.
- Frames and scripts: Cross-origin frames may not always be saveable, and scripts in cross-origin frames are never saved. Do not rely on a smaller settings selection to overcome those limitations.
- Hidden elements: Options control elements hidden by the page or other extensions. Removing unnecessary content may help avoid saving it, but the documentation does not quantify the size effect.
What to expect—and what not to assume
Save Page WE’s documentation identifies duplicate CSS image merging as a size-reduction option, but it does not publish a typical percentage, benchmark, or size comparison among the presets. The result depends on the page and the resources selected. Treat Basic Items as a way to include fewer resource classes, not as a promise that every saved page will shrink by a particular amount.
