For most people saving a webpage to read or share offline, SingleFile’s ordinary HTML output is the more portable default. Choose MHTML when the browser or application that needs to reopen the file already supports it. Neither format guarantees a perfect offline copy of an interactive site, and neither is a substitute for a professional web-preservation workflow.
What SingleFile and MHTML mean
SingleFile HTML
SingleFile is a browser extension and command-line tool that saves webpages in several formats. Its standard HTML output puts the page and its resources into one HTML file. The project documents extension support for Chrome, Firefox on desktop and mobile, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Waterfox, Yandex Browser, and Opera; actual compatibility can vary with browser versions and site behavior. MHTML
MHTML is a MIME-based aggregate document format for packaging HTML and related resources. RFC 2557 describes MIME encapsulation of aggregate documents, including HTML. RFC 2557
The name can be confusing: “SingleFile” may mean the SingleFile project, whose standard output is HTML, or Microsoft WebView2’s SingleFile save-kind enum, which saves a page as MHTML. The enum label does not mean that every file made by the SingleFile project is MHTML. Microsoft WebView2 documentation

Which format should you choose?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open the file on different browsers or share it with someone whose browser is unknown | SingleFile HTML | The project says its HTML output can be viewed without the extension and without running JavaScript; its documented extension-free viewing support is broader than MHTML’s. SingleFile project documentation |
| Use a browser or application that already opens MHTML | MHTML | It is convenient when the destination software natively supports the format. Confirm support in the actual application before saving a large archive. |
| Search saved page text in a local archive | Either | SingleFile’s format comparison marks page text as indexable in both HTML and MHTML. SingleFile project documentation |
| Extract the page’s resources later | SingleFile self-extracting ZIP | The project says its self-extracting ZIP output is compressed and can be unzipped to extract resources; its comparison does not give ordinary HTML or MHTML this extraction property. SingleFile project documentation |
| Preserve a page for professional web archiving | Neither as the preservation master | SingleFile’s FAQ says it is not a tool used by professional web archivists and points readers toward WARC-based tools. SingleFile FAQ |
The project’s comparison is qualitative; it does not establish controlled file-size or speed benchmarks. Do not assume one format will always produce a smaller file.
What will and will not work offline
Both formats aim to package a page and its resources in one file, but they use different structures. A saved file is a snapshot, not a promise that the site will replay exactly as it did online. In particular, content that had not loaded when you captured the page may be missing, and scripts or network-dependent features may not work without a connection.

SingleFile removes scripts by default because they can change rendering and are not guaranteed to work offline. Its FAQ gives dynamic maps and carousels as examples of features that may not work correctly in a saved page. Turning scripts back on or changing cleanup settings can change what is retained, but cannot make an interactive site reliably self-contained. SingleFile FAQ

- The extension cannot capture a protected page: browser security blocks extensions on some protected domains. Try a permitted page or the browser’s own save option; an extension cannot override the browser’s security restrictions. SingleFile FAQ
- Images are missing: some sites require a
Refererheader to retrieve images. SingleFile’s FAQ says sending it is off by default for privacy reasons; if you trust the site and need its images, review the relevant setting. SingleFile FAQ - Frames or deferred images are absent: the FAQ notes that removing frames or deferred images can leave resources out. Let the page finish loading and review cleanup settings when completeness matters. SingleFile FAQ
- The output is unexpectedly large or processing takes longer: removing unused styles or hidden elements can reduce output, but may affect processing time. The documentation does not provide a universal size or speed figure; results depend on the page and settings. SingleFile FAQ
- The recipient cannot open the file: confirm that their browser or application supports the selected format. If their software is unknown, try SingleFile HTML first; for MHTML, verify support on the destination device before relying on it.
- A map, carousel, or other control is frozen: this is a limitation of a static offline snapshot, not necessarily a faulty save. Keep the original URL for interactive use or choose a preservation workflow suited to your purpose.
Capture a webpage with a browser extension
- Install SingleFile from the extension store for your browser, or use the project’s CLI if you prefer a command-line workflow. Consult the official project page for supported browsers and current usage details.
- Open the page and wait for the content you need to load, especially images or other deferred content.
- Use the SingleFile extension to save the page. Choose ordinary HTML for portability, or select another output such as MHTML or self-extracting ZIP when its specific handling advantages fit your needs.
- Open the saved file in the software that will be used to read it. Check important images, text, and layout while offline; do not assume interactive components will work.

If you need an image or PDF capture rather than an offline HTML archive, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is an alternative for capturing a page, not a replacement for SingleFile or MHTML when you need a webpage archive.

Example cURL request for a screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Can I open an MHTML file in Firefox or Safari?
Support depends on the specific browser and version. SingleFile’s format comparison describes extension-free MHTML viewing as limited to Chromium-based browsers and Internet Explorer, so check the destination software before relying on MHTML. SingleFile project documentation
