SingleFileZ is designed to bundle webpage resources into a self-extracting ZIP-style file, but the available documentation does not provide a controlled comparison with Chrome’s built-in Save Page feature. What survives depends on the page, what has loaded, capture settings, and browser restrictions.
What each method is documented to save
SingleFileZ
SingleFileZ packages a page as a self-extracting ZIP-style file. Its FAQ says it can include images, CSS, frame contents, and fonts, including resources present on the page that are not displayed or already cached. The feature has been merged into SingleFile; self-extracting output is available through SingleFile’s file-format options. SingleFileZ repository and FAQ SingleFile FAQ

Chrome Save Page
The sources available here do not establish how Chrome’s built-in Save Page command handles specific resource types, frames, deferred images, or output formats. That means it would be misleading to claim that Chrome saves less—or that SingleFileZ always saves more—on the basis of this documentation.
Why a saved page may differ from the live page
- Content that has not loaded: Lazy-loaded images and other deferred resources may not be available to capture yet. SingleFile’s FAQ warns that disabling deferred-image saving can leave resources missing.
- Frames and embedded content: SingleFile can capture frame contents, but its FAQ warns that disabling frame capture can cause omissions.
- Scripts and interaction: SingleFile removes scripts by default because they can alter rendering and may not work offline. Maps, carousels, and expandable or folding titles may therefore behave differently in a saved copy.
- Browser restrictions: Extensions can be blocked from saving some domains. Some image servers also require an HTTP Referer header; SingleFile does not pass it by default, for privacy reasons.
- Processing trade-offs: SingleFileZ can take longer to save and open pages. Its FAQ says disabling removal of hidden elements and unused styles may improve speed, while turning off frame capture or deferred-image saving risks missing resources.
These are documented SingleFile/SingleFileZ considerations, not a measured head-to-head result against Chrome. The outcome on a particular site may differ.

File format and offline access matter
SingleFileZ’s self-extracting format is not the same as a plain HTML file. Its FAQ says Chrome requires the extension to open SingleFileZ files from the filesystem. SingleFile’s format documentation distinguishes formats by whether they require JavaScript or an extension, so check the format’s opening requirements before relying on it for sharing or long-term access. For professional web archiving, neither a convenient browser save nor an extension capture should be assumed to provide an archival record. The SingleFile FAQ explicitly says the project is not intended as a professional web-archiving tool and points archivists toward WARC-based tools.

How to decide for your page
- Save the same page with both methods using the browser and settings you actually intend to use.
- Open each saved result offline in the target browser. Check key images, styles, embedded frames, and any content that appeared after scrolling or waiting.
- Test interactions you care about—such as maps, carousels, or expandable sections—rather than assuming a visually complete page will remain functional.
- Record the browser version, SingleFile/SingleFileZ version, settings, and any missing content. Without a controlled test like this, a site-specific result should not be generalized into a universal ranking.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot rather than an offline webpage archive, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request website screenshot API. It is not a replacement for a self-contained saved webpage: it returns an image or PDF, not a browser-ready copy of the site.
