That permission gives it the capability to access page data on sites where access is granted; it does not, by itself, show that the extension uploads your data. SingleFile’s project FAQ says page processing happens in your browser and that it does not upload data to third-party servers.
Why does SingleFile need access to all websites?
SingleFile saves a web page, including its styling and resources, as a single HTML file. It can also save selected content, frames, links, and multiple tabs. Its FAQ explains that the tabs and all_urls permissions let it inject the code needed to process a page in any tab; saving several tabs in one click is one example. That broad scope supports an extension designed to capture pages across the web rather than one fixed website.

The permission is a capability grant, not a statement that the extension is constantly examining every page. Mozilla explains that access to all websites could allow an extension to read page content and information entered on pages, including usernames and passwords. That describes what the permission can enable; it does not establish that SingleFile routinely reads such information or sends it elsewhere.

What each permission is for
SingleFile’s FAQ says its requested permissions are defined in its manifest.json and explains their purposes. The browser’s labels and whether a permission is required or optional can vary by browser and release.

| Permission | Purpose described by SingleFile | What the browser capability means |
|---|---|---|
identity |
Connect SingleFile to a Google Drive account. | Supports the relevant account integration. |
storage |
Keep extension settings. | Allows the extension to retain its settings. |
menus / contextMenus |
Add an entry to webpage context menus. | Enables an extension menu item, such as one opened from a page context menu. |

Inject code to process pages in any tab, including for saving several tabs in one click. | Broad host access can expose page content on sites where access is granted. Tab access can also expose tab details such as its URL, title, and icon. |
downloads |
Save pages using the browser’s download mechanism. | Can let an extension save a file through the download manager and access or update download details. |
clipboardWrite |
Copy page content to the clipboard instead of saving it. | Allows writing to the clipboard; clipboard input is a separate permission and capability. |
nativeMessaging |
Use SingleFile Companion to save pages. | Allows communication with a companion program installed outside the browser. |
The Firefox Add-ons listing currently groups required permissions as downloading files and reading or modifying download history, accessing browser tabs, and accessing data for all websites. It lists exchanging messages with other programs, reading or modifying bookmarks, and clipboard input as optional permissions. Check the listing for your browser and installed version, because prompts and classifications can differ. SingleFile on Firefox Add-ons.
Does SingleFile upload saved pages?
SingleFile’s project FAQ states: “As stated in the privacy policy, SingleFile does not upload any data to third-party servers. All the work is done in your browser.” This is the project’s own description of its handling, not an independent audit claim. The broad permission alone is not evidence that data is transmitted.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
There is a separate network detail: the FAQ says saving a page can cause SingleFile to download resources present on that page—such as images, CSS, frame contents, and fonts—that are not displayed or already cached. Downloading page resources into the saved file is different from uploading the saved page to a third party.
How to limit SingleFile’s site access in Chrome
Chrome offers three site-access scopes for extensions. The exact menu wording can vary by Chrome version.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- Open Chrome and select Extensions, then Manage extensions.
- Find SingleFile and open Details.
- Under site access, choose the narrowest option that suits your workflow: When you select the extension, On the current site, or On all sites.
- Use the allowed-sites controls on the details page to add or remove specific sites, if available in your version of Chrome.
With click-to-run access, selecting the extension grants access to the open tab or window’s current site; after that tab or window is closed, you need to select the extension again to turn access on. Current-site access allows automatic access on that site, while all-sites access allows it across sites. A narrower choice means you may need to grant access or interact again when saving from a site the extension cannot currently access. It can also constrain workflows such as processing several tabs across sites.
For Chrome’s current instructions, see Google Chrome Help: Install and manage extensions.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
How to assess the privacy and security trade-off
- Separate permission from behavior. A permission defines what the extension can access under the granted scope; it does not prove how that access is used in every situation.
- Attribute data-handling claims. SingleFile says processing occurs in the browser and that it does not upload data to third-party servers. Treat this as the project’s statement, not an independent verification.
- Choose scope based on use. All-sites access is more convenient for automatic, cross-site and multi-tab saving. Click-to-run or current-site access narrows when the extension can access pages.
- Review the installed version’s prompt. Browser permission categories can change between browsers and releases. Mozilla’s explanation of permission prompts describes potential capabilities, not proof that SingleFile uses every capability in every possible way.
Mozilla’s general guidance on extension prompts is at About permission request messages for Firefox extensions. Chrome also explains permission categories in Permissions requested by apps and extensions.
