If Hindi looks wrong in a SingleFile copy, first compare it with the original webpage. If the live page is already wrong, the problem is in the page’s text, font, or rendering—not in the save. If only the saved HTML is wrong, test SingleFile’s font-removal options and isolate browser or extension conflicts. A font change cannot repair every encoding or Unicode-text problem.
First identify where the Hindi changes
- Open the original webpage in the same browser and check the affected Hindi text.
- Open the saved SingleFile HTML and compare the same passage.
- If possible, open the saved file in another browser or on another system.
If the original is broken too, SingleFile did not introduce the original defect. The page’s author may need to correct its text, CSS web font, or fallback behavior. If the original looks right but the saved copy does not, focus on the capture’s styles and fonts, then test browser settings.

Tell missing glyphs from broken text or shaping
A Hindi display problem is not automatically an encoding problem. The Unicode Consortium identifies three broad possibilities: incorrect text encoding or sequences, a limitation or bug in software, or a limitation or bug in the font. Unicode Consortium: Display Problems?

- Empty boxes or fallback-looking characters: a font may lack the needed Devanagari glyphs, or the intended web font may not be available.
- Recognizable letters that join or position incorrectly: the browser’s shaping support or the text’s Unicode sequence may be involved.
- Different characters, question marks, or garbled text: check whether the page’s text or encoding is wrong rather than assuming a missing font.
These clues narrow the possibilities; none proves a cause by itself. Unicode notes that Devanagari vowel letters should use their prescribed Unicode characters. For example, U+0906 “आ” is not equivalent to U+0905 “अ” followed by U+093E “ा”. A font download cannot correct a malformed character sequence. Unicode display guidance
Test SingleFile’s font options
When the source page renders correctly but its saved copy does not, inspect SingleFile’s font-related settings before changing system fonts. Its help documents options for removing unused fonts and alternative fonts. SingleFile’s Firefox release history includes fixes involving incorrect font removal that could make saved text appear in another font, as well as changes to selecting embedded font sources. - Save the page in a private or incognito window, where extensions may be disabled or limited according to your browser’s settings.
- Reset SingleFile’s options and save a fresh copy.
- Restart the browser and open the original and saved page again.
- Disable other extensions temporarily, then repeat the save to check for a conflict.
- If the problem remains, record the browser and version, operating system, source URL, and whether the live page differs from the saved copy. Include a reproducible example when reporting the issue.

When to contact the webpage author
If Hindi is wrong on the live page, or the page’s remote CSS font fails across the environments you tested, contact the site author. The author controls the source text and web-font implementation. Unicode recommends CSS web fonts as the way for web content to control which fonts are used. Unicode Consortium guidance
Unicode identifies Devanagari as a script used for Hindi in The Unicode Standard, Version 16.0 (2024). That context does not establish the cause of any individual page’s display problem.

Does installing a Hindi font always fix a bad SingleFile copy?
No. A font can help with missing glyph coverage, but it will not fix malformed Unicode text or a software shaping limitation.
Does SingleFile’s self-extracting ZIP encoding note apply to every saved HTML page?
