If your YouTube Live stream has no audio, first check what your encoder is actually sending: confirm the right microphone or desktop source is selected, its meters move, and a local recording made with the same setup contains sound. Then check YouTube’s ingest diagnostics separately from Owncast. The title alone does not establish whether YouTube receives audio directly from OBS or another encoder, through a separate output, or through a server-side route, so verify the actual path before changing settings.
Trace the audio path before changing settings
Owncast’s documented setup explains how to broadcast into Owncast; it does not establish that Owncast is forwarding your stream to YouTube. YouTube also has its own encoder ingest and diagnostics. Find out whether your encoder sends separate outputs to Owncast and YouTube, or whether another service or process handles one of those destinations.

For each output, identify the selected audio source or track, whether audio is enabled, the codec, sample rate, bitrate, and number of audio streams. Do not assume that two destinations share the same source or settings.
Check the encoder and audio source first
- Confirm the source. In OBS or the encoder you use, verify that the intended microphone, desktop audio, or other source is present and selected. Check that its meter moves while sound is playing or while you speak.
- Listen to the encoder preview or monitoring path. If it is silent there, troubleshoot the selected source, mute state, device, and routing before investigating either platform.
- Make a local recording with the same scene and audio routing. Play it back to confirm the recording contains sound. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s sound, routed sources, local archive, encoder errors, and CPU load; when encoder output is healthy, investigate the outbound connection. YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting guidance describes these checks.
- Compare outputs individually. If you send to both Owncast and YouTube, confirm audio is enabled and the intended track is routed to each destination. A working Owncast playback path does not by itself show what YouTube received.

Verify the destination and key
Owncast’s OBS instructions use a custom RTMP service configured with the Owncast endpoint and its matching stream key. Check that the endpoint and key belong to the Owncast server you intend to use; do not substitute YouTube’s stream key or assume this configures a YouTube output. Use compatible audio settings
Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for compatibility. Its FFmpeg example specifies AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. These are Owncast documentation settings, not proof of the settings used by your particular encoder or YouTube output. Check the Owncast streaming guidance when comparing your configuration.
Understand passthrough
Owncast says it passes audio through untouched by default. If the incoming audio is missing or faulty, passthrough can preserve that problem. When passthrough is off for an output variant, Owncast re-encodes that variant’s audio to AAC. This describes Owncast audio behavior; it does not establish that your YouTube stream is routed through Owncast. See Owncast’s audio and streaming documentation.

Use Owncast monitoring only for Owncast-served playback
The admin Stream Performance page reports playback metrics and errors for supported players. The hardware page provides CPU, memory, and disk context. Those observations can help separate an Owncast playback problem from an upstream source issue, but they cannot alone prove what YouTube received. Owncast documents its admin tools at the admin documentation.
Check YouTube’s ingest diagnostics separately
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio. Its published recommendation for stereo is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; it also advises sending one audio stream. Compare these settings against the actual YouTube output, not just the settings for Owncast. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the error text and audio status. YouTube lists missing audio, multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, incorrect sample rates, and bitrate warnings among ingestion problems. Its error guide includes the message “Your encoder is sending no audio.” If YouTube reports no audio, confirm the encoder’s audio option is enabled and only one audio stream is being sent. If it reports unsupported settings, adjust the codec, sample rate, or bitrate it identifies. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
Diagnose by symptom
