Use a mix of public disclosures, commercial research, and your own customer-facing records to understand competitors. Start with a specific decision or question, choose sources suited to it, and corroborate consequential claims: a pricing page, job post, review, or database entry is evidence to assess, not automatically a verified conclusion.
The three source families to use
Public sources
Competitor websites, press releases, annual reports, regulatory filings, job postings, patents, customer reviews, social media, trade publications, and industry events show what organizations disclose or visibly do. They are often inexpensive to access, but finding and interpreting relevant evidence takes time.

Commercial sources
Analyst reports, market databases, company-reference data, paid news services, and monitoring platforms may provide structured coverage, historical context, or benchmarks. They cost money, and their methods, coverage, definitions, and framing shape the evidence.
Internal sources
CRM records, deal notes, sales calls, win-loss interviews, customer-success and support conversations, and input from frontline teams can explain why buyers choose or leave alternatives. They may reflect a limited sample, inconsistent record-keeping, or internal assumptions.

Do not depend on just one family. Public materials may reflect competitor messaging, commercial sources use provider-specific methods, and internal notes can preserve your own organization’s blind spots. Cross-checking helps expose those limitations.
Where to look and what each source can tell you
| Source | Useful for | Interpret with care |
|---|---|---|
| Competitor product, pricing, and help pages | Positioning, offers, feature descriptions, packaging, and visible changes | These pages state company claims. Check availability and market context, and record when you viewed them. Contify’s source guide |
| Press releases and company news | Announced launches, partnerships, funding, and leadership changes | An announcement may confirm work already underway. Compare it with earlier signals and dated evidence. Contify’s source guide |
| Annual reports, financial filings, investor materials, and earnings discussions | Public-company financial disclosures, business segments, stated risks, and management’s account of the business | Availability depends on company status and jurisdiction. Attribute forecasts and company statements rather than presenting them as established outcomes. Contify’s source guide |
| Job postings and hiring patterns | Possible investment in functions, technologies, customer segments, or regions | A vacancy is an indirect signal, not proof of a planned launch or strategy. Patterns over time are more informative than one posting. Contify’s source guide |
| Patent databases | Disclosed inventions and technical activity | A filing does not establish commercial intent, product readiness, or launch timing; relevance varies by sector. Contify’s source guide |
| Customer reviews, forums, and social media | Customer language, recurring complaints, perceived strengths, and brand discussion | Posts and reviews are self-selected and may not represent the full customer base. Look for repeated themes and independent corroboration. Contify’s source guide |
| Trade publications, associations, and events | Sector developments, specialist reporting, expert commentary, demonstrations, and industry concerns | Separate reported facts from commentary, and check whether independent coverage repeats a claim. Contify’s source guide |
| Government statistics and regulatory portals | Market context, category demand, labor and economic signals, and formal regulatory disclosures | Match geography, definitions, reporting period, and industry classification to your question. Contify’s source guide |
| Analyst reports and market studies | Market sizing, forecasts, industry benchmarks, and competitor comparisons | Check scope, definitions, date, and method before comparing figures from different publishers. Contify’s source guide |
| CRM, deal notes, sales calls, and win-loss interviews | Buyer alternatives, objection language, decision criteria, and reasons for wins or losses | Internal samples may be incomplete or shaped by how teams record conversations. Compare segments and outcomes. Contify’s source guide |
| Commercial company-reference data | Structured company profiles, financials, ownership links, patents, transactions, and news | Check coverage, geography, provenance, update timing, and provider definitions. Moody’s company-reference data is one example of a paid offering in this category, not a universal fit. Moody’s; Moody’s company-reference data |
Choose sources by the decision you need to make
Write the question in decision terms before collecting mentions. For example: “How has this rival changed pricing in our target region?” or “Why are qualified buyers choosing another supplier?” Contify likewise frames source value around the strategic questions a business needs answered: Contify’s guide to competitive-intelligence sources.
- Offer and positioning changes: Keep dated copies of the competitor’s product, pricing, and announcement pages. Compare changes with customer reviews and conversations.
- Financial strength or public commitments: Use applicable filings and investor disclosures, and verify the company identity and reporting period. Not every competitor has public-company filings.
- Possible capability or expansion: Monitor hiring patterns, patents, regulatory records, and industry coverage. Label these as inferences until independently confirmed.
- Customer preference and churn: Combine review themes with CRM, support, sales, and win-loss evidence. Each captures a different, potentially biased slice of experience.
- Market size or category movement: Consult analyst research and official statistics, checking that the market definition and time period match your comparison.
For consequential claims, keep the exact source or record identifier, access date, geography, relevant time period, and a note separating observation from interpretation. Public material can leave an audit trail another researcher can revisit; commercial data may add depth but still requires scrutiny of its coverage and methods. Contify’s source guide

- THIS IS AN EXPANSION TO STAR WARS OUTER RIM: This is not a standalone experience. You will need a copy of the Star Wars Outer Rim base game in order to play with this expansion.
- TAKE TO THE STARS AND BECOME A LIVING LEGEND: You’ve made a name for yourself in the Outer Rim, but there is still Unfinished Business. Hyperlanes through the Core Worlds hold the promise of untapped opportunities. The market is flush with new merchandise, from valuable cargo to tools of the trade. Just watch your step; the latest crop of bounties is even deadlier, and your rivals are looking to take you down!
- STRATEGY GAME: The goal of Outer Rim is to be the first player to reach ten fame, but the path to notoriety can be different for every scoundrel. Cross paths with the various factions patrolling the Outer Rim, bring in iconic Star Wars characters dead or alive for bounties, or make a fortune delivering illegal cargo, dodging patrols and encounters across the galaxy.
- UNFINISHED BUSINESS: This long-awaited expansion is packed with more of everything the game has to offer - characters, ships, gear, bounties, jobs, encounters, dice and more! Two new tiles allow players to cross the galaxy by passing through the Core Worlds, and the new “favors” and “ambitions” change up how the game is played. Fire up your engines—it’s time to get down to business.
- NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: Star Wars Outer Rim is a strategy board game for 1 to 4 players and is suitable for ages 14 and older. Average playtime is approximately 3 to 4 hours.
Compare sources before paying for coverage
- Question fit: Does this source answer the decision at hand?
- Directness: Is the evidence a company disclosure, a customer account, a third-party estimate, or your interpretation?
- Coverage: Does it include the companies, geography, industry, and competitor set you need?
- Recency and history: How often is it updated, and can you track change over time?
- Auditability: Can a colleague trace the claim back to its source and reproduce the observation?
- Cost and effort: Is a public search adequate, or is structured paid research worth its cost and setup time?
There is no universally best source: the answer depends on the question, evidence type, coverage, and resources available. Provider claims about standardized or historical data should be assessed against those needs. Contify; Moody’s

For a visible change to a product, pricing, or announcement page, a dated screenshot can preserve what you observed instead of relying on memory or a page that later changes. A do-it-yourself workflow is to open the public page in a browser, capture the relevant viewport or full page, save the image with the URL and date, and record any interpretation separately from the observation. Keep the capture and source details together in the same evidence record.
