To get better at focusing on one thing at a time, pick a single priority, set aside a defined block for it, reduce interruptions you can control, and jot down stray reminders instead of following them immediately. Treat this as a practical habit to try—not a proven way to build a general-purpose attention skill. Studies show that switching tasks can carry costs, but they do not establish that routine single-tasking reliably improves workplace productivity.
What task-switching costs—and what they do not mean
Changing tasks can take time because the mind has to adjust to a new set of rules and goals. The previous task can also continue to compete for attention. In ordinary work, there may be an additional step: remembering where you left off and deciding when to return. The American Psychological Association describes these costs and notes that their importance depends on what the situation demands: “Problems arise only when switching costs conflict with environmental demands for productivity and safety.” APA: “Multitasking: Switching costs”

That is why the useful goal is to reduce avoidable switching, not to ignore a colleague, customer, or alert when the work requires a timely response. A task change is not automatically a mistake; its cost matters in context.
Does practicing focus train a general attention “muscle”?
“Single-tasking is a muscle” works as a metaphor for practicing a routine. It is not a demonstrated finding that doing one task at a time reliably strengthens a broad attention faculty or raises productivity across people and settings. Task-switching experiments measure performance on specific tasks, and practice effects on those measures do not by themselves prove transfer to everyday work.

Practice can change some switching-task results
A 2017 laboratory study used six successive practice sessions of a task-switching paradigm. Early in practice, a longer preparation interval reduced switch costs for digit tasks; later, that benefit disappeared. The authors interpreted the pattern as consistent with improved preparation efficiency for non-perceptual task processes. This is evidence about a trained experimental task, not a test of whether a daily single-tasking habit improves general focus. Frontiers in Psychology study (2017)
A 2020 study likewise found that practice appeared to reduce reaction times overall and switch costs to an asymptotic level, while congruency effects and their modulation remained remarkably constant. In other words, practice changed some measured components, not all of them. Psychological Research study (2020)

A large-scale analysis using data from an online cognitive-training platform examined practice effects in cued task switching across adulthood. Its subject was performance on switching measures; it does not establish that ordinary one-task-at-a-time work causes broad real-world benefits. Large-scale task-switching practice analysis (2019)

A 2025 study in Cerebral Cortex assigned children aged 8–11 to intensive task-switching training (72 participants), intensive single-task training (74), or passive control (41). Mixing costs decreased initially in both training groups, but only the task-switching group maintained those improvements at the end of the nine-week training. The result concerns children completing specific experimental tasks; it should not be generalized to workplace focus in adults. Cerebral Cortex study (2025)

How to try single-tasking in everyday work
One low-friction approach is to make the next work block easier to protect, without treating it as a guaranteed productivity fix. A 2026 Atlantic personal account describes choosing one daily priority, using phone focus controls or putting the phone away where feasible, and writing other reminders in a notebook. These are practical ideas to experiment with, not results from a randomized trial. The Atlantic account (2026)
- Choose one priority. Name the task you intend to work on next. A specific outcome is easier to return to than a vague instruction to “focus.”
- Set a defined work block. Choose a span that fits the task and your responsibilities. The sources do not establish a universally best duration.
- Reduce interruptions you control. Where your role allows, silence nonessential alerts, use a phone focus control, or put the phone out of reach. Do not suppress channels needed for urgent or safety-critical work.
- Capture distracting reminders. Write down a thought or follow-up to revisit rather than switching tasks just to keep it in mind.
- Return deliberately. When the block ends—or a necessary interruption occurs—use the written priority and reminder to decide what to resume or handle next.
How to tell whether the habit is helping
Judge the experiment by the problem you wanted to solve, not by an assumption that focus has been permanently “trained.” If interruptions were pulling you away, notice whether you can complete the selected task with fewer avoidable breaks. If the work itself requires rapid responses, a strict no-interruption block may be a poor fit; the aim is to manage switching in line with the demands of the job. The available studies do not provide a universal productivity percentage or prove that these everyday steps increase output for everyone.
