Custom 3D-printed casts and splints may make fracture care more comfortable and convenient for some children, but current pediatric studies cover selected injuries and do not show that printed devices are right for every fracture. They are patient-specific clinical devices—not a home-printing project—and the child’s clinician should decide whether one is suitable.
What pediatric studies have found
The most encouraging reports involve selected stable fractures, particularly wrist and forearm injuries. They suggest potential gains in comfort, patient acceptance and everyday function, but the evidence is still limited and does not establish a universal replacement for conventional immobilization.

Stable fractures: a 2025 comparison
A retrospective study compared 106 children with selected stable fracture patterns: 49 received custom 3D-printed casts and 57 received traditional fiberglass casts. The study authors reported that children in the printed-cast group found showering, swimming and sports easier, reported fewer overall functional limitations, and perceived their casts as more durable. Skin irritation was reported in 12.2% of the printed-cast group and 8.8% of the fiberglass group; the difference was not statistically significant. There was one unplanned visit in the printed-cast group and five in the traditional-cast group, also not a statistically significant difference. One child in the printed-cast group lost alignment after not following activity restrictions. Estimated institutional charges were sometimes slightly higher for the printed cast. These findings describe one retrospective cohort, not every child or fracture. Read the 2025 study.

A study of 56 children with selected distal-radius fractures compared custom 3D-printed splints with traditional U-shaped plaster immobilization. Both approaches were reported as suitable for the study’s selected injuries, while patient acceptance was higher for the printed splint. Because this was an exploratory study at one centre, its findings should not be extended to unstable, displaced or otherwise unrepresented fractures. Read the study in Frontiers in Pediatrics.

Earlier pediatric evidence is small
A 2022 case series followed 10 children with distal-radius buckle fractures for 21 days and reported positive results for comfort, containment and mechanical integrity. The authors classified it as Level IV evidence. A 2021 paper also described pediatric printed orthoses as an emerging clinical option with limited clinical evidence. These early reports are useful signals, not proof of broad effectiveness. Read the 2022 case series and the 2021 study.
What a printed cast may—and may not—change
The practical appeal is a custom fit and, in the 2025 stable-fracture comparison, better reported ease with certain activities. That should not be confused with permission to use the injured limb freely. One child in that study lost alignment after violating activity restrictions, underscoring that a device’s design does not remove the need to protect a healing fracture.

(e.g.got cast and bandaged).
- ✅ Easy to Use: With this kids arm cast cover, it can protect your arm, hand, wrist, thumb, fingers or elbow injuries or other injured part on your arm. So, you can shower, bath or take other outdoor activities after recovering from injuries, surgeries, accidents, medical conditions like, rashes, burns, skin problems, wounds and scratches.
- ✅Multi‑Scenario Protection – Shower Sleeve for Arm Cast: Idea for daily showers, baths, and outdoor splashing. However, this arm cast protector for shower kids is NOT designed for swimming – prolonged submersion may compromise the seal. Ideal for keeping casts dry during routine washing and light water play, but please avoid pools, lakes, or the ocean.
Nor does the available evidence prove that skin problems are eliminated: the 2025 comparison found similar observed irritation rates, and a non-significant difference is not proof that risks are absent. The studies also do not establish a general cost advantage; the 2025 cohort estimated that institutional charges were sometimes slightly higher for printed casts.

The evidence supports a cautious answer: selected children in supervised clinical studies used patient-specific printed casts or splints with promising reported outcomes, but the studies are too limited to establish safety and effectiveness for every child, fracture type or care setting. Suitability depends on the specific fracture, its stability and alignment, the child, and the treating clinician’s assessment.

The published work concerns devices made for individual patients in clinical workflows. It does not show that a family can safely design, print, modify or repair a fracture cast at home. Families should discuss any device choice with the clinician responsible for the fracture and follow the clinician’s instructions for activity, fit and follow-up.
What to discuss with the treating clinician
If a clinician raises a 3D-printed cast or splint, use the discussion to clarify how the option fits the child’s particular injury—not as a general contest between materials.

- Fracture and stability: Is this injury similar to the stable or distal-radius fractures represented in the pediatric studies, and is its alignment suitable for the proposed device?
- Fit and follow-up: How will the device be fitted and checked, and what should the family do if it feels uncomfortable, becomes damaged or seems to fit differently?
- Activities: Which activities are allowed during healing? Do not assume that reported ease with showering, swimming or sports means those activities are permitted for this child.
- Skin and comfort: What skin changes or discomfort should prompt a call or an examination?
- Practical and financial details: What is the expected care workflow and charge for this child? One study found estimated institutional charges were sometimes slightly higher, but it does not establish what a particular clinic will charge.
Evidence that should not be mistaken for pediatric 3D-cast proof
A 2024 randomized trial involving 40 people with Colles fractures compared an instant 3D-printed cast with a polymer orthosis and reported favorable short-term outcomes for the printed device. It was not a pediatric study, so it cannot establish effectiveness in children. Read the 2024 trial.
A separate 2025 randomized trial found a removable walking boot noninferior to circumferential casting for pain recovery at four weeks in children aged 9 months to 4 years with toddler’s fractures. That study examined boots, not 3D-printed casts, and should not be treated as evidence for printed devices. Read the toddler’s-fracture trial.
