Its published key hierarchy uses XChaCha20-Poly1305-IETF and Argon2id, and NordPass says your Master Password and encryption and decryption keys never reach its servers. Those are vendor claims about the design—not proof that every component is secure or protection against every threat. NordPass also names an independent Cure53 audit, but the available feature page does not provide the report’s date, scope, findings, or remediation details.
How NordPass says it protects your passwords
NordPass’s security documentation describes a sequence of keys rather than a single password-to-vault encryption step. The process below is NordPass’s own account of its architecture; it is not independent verification of the implementation.

- It creates a Master Key. NordPass says Argon2id, a password-based key derivation function, and a 16-byte salt derive a Master Key from the Master Password.
- It protects the private key. The service says each user has public and private encryption keys. The private key is encrypted locally with XChaCha20-Poly1305-IETF.
- It unlocks the key hierarchy. NordPass says the Master Key decrypts the private key. The private key then decrypts a data encryption key, which protects the vault contents.
- It encrypts data before cloud upload. NordPass says encryption happens on the device and that the private key is wiped from memory when the app locks.
NordPass Support states: “Your Master Password, encryption, and decryption keys never reach our servers.” That is the company’s statement about its service, not an independently established finding.

What independent verification is available?
NordPass’s official feature page says the service has successfully undergone an independent security audit by Cure53. The page information available here does not supply the full current report, its date, the systems and versions in scope, findings, or remediation details. The audit claim is relevant, but it is not enough on its own to determine what was examined or whether the results apply to every current app, platform, and part of the infrastructure.
When comparing password managers, look for the report itself and check its publication date, scope, findings, and remediation status. An audit is a point-in-time assessment of defined components, not a blanket guarantee of future security.

Which extra protections and data types does NordPass support?
A Tom’s Guide review published October 3, 2026 reports that NordPass supports multi-factor authentication with one-time-password apps and U2F hardware keys. That establishes support at the category level; it does not confirm compatibility with a specific security-key model. Check the current setup guidance before buying a key.
NordPass’s feature documentation describes vault storage for passwords, passkeys, credit card details, and other data. Storing more than passwords in a vault may be convenient, but the same account and device security considerations apply to everything stored there.

What to check before choosing NordPass
The published encryption description and audit claim are only part of a practical comparison. Verify the details that affect how you will use and recover the account:
- Audit evidence: Find the report date and scope, and check what it says about findings and fixes.
- Account MFA: Confirm which methods are currently supported for your account and whether your preferred hardware key is compatible.
- Platforms and autofill: Check coverage for your devices and browsers, then test how autofill behaves on the sites and apps you rely on.
- Recovery and lockout: Read the current account-recovery and lockout instructions before storing credentials. The sources cited here do not establish the complete recovery process.
- Plan and region details: Confirm device limits, features, and regional pricing directly before subscribing. Current pricing and geographic differences are not established here.
NordPass’s security documentation describes its cryptographic design; its feature page names the Cure53 audit; and its support article about server storage contains the statement about keys not reaching its servers. For a comparison, use primary documentation where available and distinguish product claims from what an audit report actually verifies.
