Before using a strategy chart, check the table’s rules—especially its blackjack payout and whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17. One deck does not automatically mean better odds.
How single-deck blackjack works
In blackjack, you compare your hand with the dealer’s. Number cards count at face value, face cards count as 10, and an ace can count as either 1 or 11. A hand is “soft” when an ace can count as 11 without making the total exceed 21; it is “hard” when it cannot.

A natural blackjack is an ace and a 10-value card in your first two cards. If your total exceeds 21, you bust. If neither you nor the dealer busts, the higher total wins; equal totals are a push, meaning the wager is returned. The exact payout and options such as doubling or splitting depend on the table’s rules.

“Single deck” describes the number of decks used, not one universal set of rules. For example, Danske Spil’s documented game uses one 52-card deck and shuffles it after every hand. In that game, the dealer hits soft 17, the player may split once, may double on 9, 10, or 11, and cannot surrender. A natural blackjack pays 1.5 to 1 unless the dealer also has one. Those are rules for that particular game, not defaults for every single-deck table. Danske Spil’s single-deck rules

How to use a basic-strategy chart
Basic strategy is a lookup: find your hand and the dealer’s visible card, then follow the action shown for that combination. Depending on the chart and table rules, the action may be to hit, stand, double, or split. A chart is a decision guide for the specified rules, not a guarantee of winning.
- Identify the table rules. In particular, find out whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17. Also note the blackjack payout and which doubles, splits, and surrender options are allowed.
- Choose the matching chart. Wizard of Odds publishes separate single-deck charts for games where the dealer stands on soft 17 and where the dealer hits soft 17. Select the one that matches your table.
- Locate your hand and the dealer’s up-card. Use the chart’s labels to distinguish hard totals, soft totals, and pairs. Follow the instruction at their intersection.
- Check for composition-specific exceptions. Some decisions can depend on the exact cards in your hand, not just the total. Wizard of Odds lists composition-dependent exceptions alongside its single-deck strategy material.
- Confirm the action is permitted. A chart cannot make an unavailable option legal: if your table restricts doubling or splitting, follow the table’s rules.
Wizard of Odds’ single-deck strategy charts include both soft-17 versions and related composition-dependent information.

Check these rules before you wager
- Blackjack payout: Confirm what a natural blackjack pays. A one-deck game can still have a less favorable payout than another table.
- Soft 17: Check whether the dealer hits or stands on a soft 17, then use the corresponding chart.
- Doubling: Find out which starting totals can be doubled and whether doubling after a split is allowed.
- Splitting: Check which pairs may be split and whether resplitting is allowed.
- Surrender: Confirm whether the option exists; some games do not offer it.
- Shuffle practice: Find out when the deck is shuffled. If it is shuffled after every hand, there is no continuing undealt shoe between rounds.
Rules can also depend on location. For example, New York’s cited regulation generally sets a 3:2 natural-blackjack payout, but its provisions for games using one or two decks allow a 6:5 minimum or another amount approved by the commission. This is a New York rule example, not a global standard. New York’s blackjack regulation

Not by itself. Deck count is only one part of the game; payout and play rules matter too. A single-deck label does not establish that a table is more favorable, and it does not promise a profit.

PokerStars Casino gives example house-edge figures of 0.17% for one deck and 0.46%, 0.60%, 0.64%, and 0.66% for two, four, six, and eight decks, respectively, under its comparison assumptions. It also reports that changing a blackjack payout from 3:2 to 6:5 can add 1.36% or more to the house edge. These are that publisher’s comparison figures, not universal results for every table. Insurance and even money
Wizard of Odds advises against insurance and even money in the strategy situation it describes. For its one-deck example, it reports a 5.9% house edge on insurance; that figure belongs to that source’s stated example, not every blackjack game. The source’s single-deck strategy discussion
