No: the Nikon D5100 is a DX-format camera, not a full-frame (FX) camera. Nikon lists its sensor as 23.6 × 15.6 mm; Nikon’s FX format corresponds to the traditional 35 mm frame size.
How do you tell whether the D5100 is full frame?
Check the sensor format, not the lens mounted on the camera. Nikon’s D5100 specifications identify the camera as DX and list a 23.6 × 15.6 mm CMOS sensor with 16.2 million effective pixels. Nikon describes FX as the format matching a traditional 35 mm still-image frame in its DX and FX format explanation.

Nikon introduced the D5100 as a DX-format digital SLR in its April 5, 2011 announcement. Its camera format is therefore DX regardless of which compatible lens is attached.

Nikon’s D5100 manual gives an approximate 1.5× effective angle-of-view conversion for DX. This describes how much of a scene the camera captures compared with the angle of view associated with the same focal length on a 35 mm/FX format camera. It does not change the lens’s physical focal length.

For example, a 50 mm lens on the D5100 gives an angle of view comparable to approximately 75 mm on a 35 mm/FX format camera (50 × 1.5). The lens remains a 50 mm lens.
Will an FX lens make the D5100 full frame?
No. Nikon says a full-frame NIKKOR lens can be attached to a DX camera, but the DX camera’s smaller sensor still determines the captured image. The angle of view is approximately 1.5× narrower than on FX for the same focal length. An FX lens does not change the D5100’s sensor format.

Quick format comparison
| Camera or format | Sensor format and size | Angle-of-view note |
|---|---|---|
| Nikon D5100 | DX; 23.6 × 15.6 mm | Approximately 1.5× DX angle-of-view factor |
| Nikon FX | FX; corresponds to a traditional 35 mm still-image frame | Reference format for the DX comparison |
The D5100 also uses a Nikon F mount and SD, SDHC, or SDXC media, but those specifications do not determine whether its sensor is full frame.
