For a smart-home device, use the SmartThings steps below; for Galaxy software, use Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
Choose the update you mean
- SmartThings app: updates the app on your phone.
- SmartThings device firmware: updates supported connected devices, such as certain sensors, outlets, and buttons.
- SmartThings Wifi hub firmware: uses a hub-specific setting.
- Galaxy phone or tablet software: can be updated with Samsung Smart Switch on a computer.
The steps below are based on Samsung U.S. support instructions. Menu labels and availability can vary by device model, app version, software version, carrier, and market. Check the support instructions for your exact smart switch model before assuming its firmware can be updated through SmartThings.

Update the SmartThings app
Samsung’s U.S. instructions give two ways to check for an app update.
From SmartThings
- Open SmartThings and tap Menu (the three horizontal lines).
- Tap Settings, then About SmartThings.
- Tap Update if the option appears, then follow the prompts.
From the Google Play Store
- Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps & device, then Updates available.
- Tap Update beside SmartThings if it is listed.
Samsung’s instructions: Update the SmartThings app.

Update supported SmartThings device firmware
For supported sensors, outlets, and buttons, Samsung’s documented route is to open the device’s information in SmartThings. The option is not available for every device or at every time.
- In SmartThings, select the relevant home or location, then choose the device.
- Tap More options (three dots), then Information.
- Tap Firmware update if it appears and follow the on-screen steps.
If Firmware update does not appear, Samsung says no update is available through this route at that time. A device may briefly go offline while firmware installs. Do not assume this path applies to every smart switch model; consult its model-specific support instructions.

A SmartThings Wifi hub has a separate firmware settings path. This procedure is specific to the hub, not a general update method for other smart switches.

- In SmartThings, tap Devices and select the Wifi hub.
- Tap More Options, then Settings.
- Open Device firmware updates and confirm that Automatic update is selected.
Samsung’s instructions: Update the SmartThings Wifi hub and connected devices firmware.
Update a Galaxy phone or tablet with Smart Switch
If you meant Samsung’s desktop Smart Switch application, it can offer a software update for a connected Galaxy phone or tablet.

- Install and open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy device to the computer with its USB cable and wait for Smart Switch to detect it.
- Select Update if offered and follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the device until the update finishes. The device reboots when the process completes.

If a SmartThings device is unresponsive
An update is not the only possible cause of an offline or incorrect device status. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking power and connectivity, and checking for SmartThings or the device’s native-app software updates. Treat resetting and re-adding a hub as troubleshooting rather than a routine firmware-update step. Samsung says that after a hub is reset and added again, closing and reopening SmartThings makes the app check the hub firmware.
