To turn off the narrator in Minecraft, use the control for your edition: in Java Edition, go to Options > Chat Settings > Narrator and select Off. In Bedrock Edition, open Settings > Accessibility and turn off UI narration, chat text-to-speech, or both, depending on what is speaking.

How do I turn narrator off in Minecraft Java?

  1. Open Minecraft: Java Edition and select Options.
  2. Select Chat Settings.
  3. Find Narrator and set it to Off.

Minecraft Help describes this setting as controlling the in-game narrator for chat messages. See Minecraft’s Java Edition accessibility instructions.

How to turn off narrator in Minecraft Bedrock

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Turn off the narration control matching what you hear: UI text-to-speech for menus, chat text-to-speech for messages, or both if needed.

Bedrock treats menu/UI narration and chat speech as separate controls. Menu wording and navigation can vary by platform and language. Minecraft’s Help page for Bedrock Accessibility is localized in Portuguese and notes that machine translation may be imperfect; if labels differ, look for the corresponding narration controls under Accessibility. See Minecraft’s Bedrock accessibility instructions.

Use the Bedrock chat narration shortcut

On a keyboard, press Ctrl+B to toggle Bedrock chat text-to-speech during a session. This shortcut applies to chat speech; it is not documented as a way to disable all menu narration or as a Java shortcut. If speech continues, turn off the relevant option in Settings > Accessibility.

If Minecraft narration keeps coming back

  • Menus are read aloud in Bedrock: Turn off UI narration in Settings > Accessibility. If it switches back on when the game starts, check whether a platform screen reader is enabled in your device’s accessibility settings. Minecraft says an enabled platform screen reader can automatically enable menu UI narration at startup.
  • Chat is read aloud in Java: Check Options > Chat Settings > Narrator and set it to Off.
  • Chat is read aloud in Bedrock: Disable chat text-to-speech in Accessibility settings, or use Ctrl+B on a keyboard to toggle it for the current session.
  • You cannot tell which voice is speaking: Disable the relevant in-game narration setting, then check whether the remaining speech comes from your device’s screen reader rather than Minecraft. The documented instructions do not provide a complete diagnosis for every platform.

Minecraft’s accessibility overview explains that its games include accessibility menus and identifies Bedrock text-to-speech features. Read the Minecraft accessibility overview.
