To download a Yoto card for offline playback, connect the player to Wi-Fi, insert the card and let it play for a few seconds. Then leave the player on, charging and connected to Wi-Fi until the audio finishes downloading. The audio is stored on the player—not on the card itself. In the Yoto app, check Settings → [player] → Audio Download Status before going offline.
What “downloading a Yoto card” means
A physical Yoto card acts as a key that tells a player which audio to play. For ordinary card content, the player streams audio the first time the card is played while downloading it in the background; it then stores the audio internally for offline playback. The card is not a conventional storage device. Yoto explains what its cards are made from, and its offline-playback guidance describes when a connection is needed.

There are several different tasks people may mean by “download”: preparing a card you own for offline listening, putting personal MP3s on a Make Your Own (MYO) card, or linking a digital title to a physical card. These use different steps.

- Connect the player to Wi-Fi. A Yoto Player or Yoto Mini needs Wi-Fi for setup and the first time each ordinary downloadable card is played.
- Insert the card and let it play for a few seconds. This starts playback and the background download. Repeat for every card you want available offline.
- Leave the player on, charging and connected. It can finish downloading in the background. Yoto recommends leaving it overnight before a trip if you need to prepare several titles.
- Check progress in the app. Open Settings, select the player, then choose Audio Download Status. Wait until the titles you need show as downloaded.
- Test before leaving. Disconnect the player from Wi-Fi and try a card whose download is complete.
Yoto’s first-card instructions explain the initial playback process: Playing your first Yoto card. There is no exact download duration established in the guidance, so use the status screen rather than assuming a title is ready after a fixed wait.

Preloading from the library on 4th Generation players
Yoto documents a Green Button playlist option for downloading titles already in the library on Yoto Player 4th Gen and Yoto Mini 4th Gen. Some physical-card purchases may need to be inserted once before appearing in the library. If the library contains more audio than the player can retain, the player can keep more-played titles and make room; an item can download again when played online. For other player generations, use the insert-and-play method above.
Put your own MP3s on a Make Your Own card
Personal MP3s use a playlist-and-link workflow; inserting a card does not copy files onto it. Sign in to Yoto’s web dashboard with the same email address used in the Yoto app.

See Yoto’s instructions for adding MP3 files to a Yoto card. Use only audio you created or have permission to use. Yoto’s Make Your Own guidance notes that copyright rules and rights-holder terms vary by country; owning an audio file does not automatically grant permission to upload or share it.
Link a digital title to a physical card
Yoto Digital Cards can be played in the app or linked to a Make Your Own card. After linking, download the title to the player using the offline steps above. The physical card then acts as a shortcut to the title, and downloaded eligible audio can play offline. Radio and podcast content remains an exception because it streams. Each Make Your Own card links to one title at a time. See Yoto’s pages on Digital Cards and replacing a card with a Make Your Own card.

What works offline—and what does not
- Downloaded card audio: plays from the player’s internal storage without internet.
- Radio stations and podcasts: continue streaming and require an active connection; they do not become offline audio through the download process.
- Yoto app playback on a phone: requires internet on the phone. Playing audio in the app is not the same as downloading it to the player.
- Player settings and online features: some functions may be inaccessible offline. Yoto’s holiday preparation guidance specifically flags settings, day-and-night clock behavior, Yoto Radio, Yoto Daily, and podcast and radio cards.
If a card is not ready offline
- Check Settings → [player] → Audio Download Status in the app to see whether the title is complete or still waiting.
- If it is incomplete, keep the player on, connected to Wi-Fi and charging, then check the status again.
- Confirm that the card played for a few seconds while the player was online; the first play starts the download process.
- Test a completed title with Wi-Fi disconnected before travel. For the app’s download-status instructions, see Yoto’s app guide.
