Silver Peak SD-WAN is the former name and product lineage of the enterprise networking solution now marketed by HPE Aruba Networking as EdgeConnect SD-WAN. Aruba acquired Silver Peak in 2020. In plain terms, SD-WAN uses centrally managed software policies to direct and manage traffic across an organization’s wide area network (WAN). In this platform, Orchestrator manages policies and the network fabric, while EdgeConnect appliances connect sites and handle traffic at the network edge.
What is Silver Peak SD-WAN?
Silver Peak SD-WAN refers to the technology developed under the Silver Peak name and now presented by HPE Aruba Networking as EdgeConnect SD-WAN. The current solution is described as a combination of Orchestrator, EdgeConnect appliances, Aruba Boost, and Advanced Security features. SD-WAN is a software-defined approach to managing WAN connections. Rather than relying only on fixed, device-by-device routing, an organization can set central policies for how applications and traffic should use its network. HPE describes EdgeConnect as an enterprise edge platform; its capabilities and results depend on the deployment, configuration, and applicable product entitlements.

Orchestrator

EdgeConnect appliances
EdgeConnect appliances operate as gateways at network sites. HPE documentation describes routing, security, application visibility and control, and SD-WAN functions. The platform includes physical and virtual appliance forms, allowing deployment choices to reflect site requirements and infrastructure. Business Intent Overlays
Business Intent Overlays are policy constructs for applying application- and business-driven traffic handling across the SD-WAN fabric. They let administrators express how traffic should be treated in relation to application needs and available network resources. Aruba Boost
Boost is an optional WAN optimization technology. HPE describes it as a performance pack for selected needs, including latency-sensitive applications and reducing transmission of repetitive data. Whether it helps depends on the workloads and deployment; it is not a universal requirement for SD-WAN. Advanced Security is listed as part of the current solution. The available product overview does not establish a complete feature inventory, so the exact security capabilities should be checked in current HPE Aruba Networking documentation and against the relevant licensing before deployment. What can EdgeConnect SD-WAN do?
Apply centralized policies to application traffic
Administrators can define business-intent policies centrally and use them to control how applications are handled across the WAN. This describes the platform’s policy model; it does not guarantee a particular application’s performance in every network.
Steer traffic across WAN transports
HPE’s technical guidance describes using combinations of transport services and aligning overlays with application performance needs and available network resources. Support segmentation and security services
HPE documentation lists network segmentation and security services among the platform’s capabilities. The exact functions available to an organization depend on the current product configuration and licensing; confirm those details with current product documentation. EdgeConnect appliances provide application visibility and control. HPE also documents REST APIs and separate appliance- and Orchestrator-level integration points for management, monitoring, configuration, and automation. Appliance integrations expose device-specific information; Orchestrator integrations provide a fabric-wide view that includes topology, overlays, and application policies. HPE documentation says EdgeConnect produces statistics every minute. It contrasts this with a general industry collection interval of five minutes; that comparison is HPE’s characterization, not an independently established benchmark. HPE also cautions that Orchestrator’s REST API is not designed for high-frequency polling of granular statistics or external data replication. Request volume increases with the number of appliances and the granularity of collected data, which can strain Orchestrator resources. What should administrators check before integrating or upgrading?
Review API compatibility before moving to Orchestrator 9.3
HPE says Orchestrator release 9.3 changed REST API endpoint definitions, and those changes are not backward compatible with pre-9.3 endpoints. Before upgrading, identify scripts, third-party tools, and internal applications that use the API, then review them for endpoint changes and test the integrations against the intended release. Match data collection to operational needs
Use the documented statistics and notification mechanisms appropriate to the task: frequent granular API polling can burden Orchestrator, while the Notification Service is intended for streaming aggregated alarms and audit events. Plan integrations around the data required, appliance count, and collection frequency rather than treating the API as a high-volume replication feed. What benefits and limits should you expect?
The documented strengths are centralized policy management, application-aware traffic handling, visibility, integration options, and support for physical or virtual edge appliances. Optional Boost may suit selected optimization workloads. These capabilities can make the platform relevant to enterprises managing distributed sites and multiple WAN connections.
They do not establish universal savings, uptime gains, or speed improvements, nor do the cited vendor materials provide an independent comparison with competing platforms. Actual outcomes depend on network conditions, design, configuration, workloads, licensing, and operating requirements. Current hardware availability, support lifecycle, and deployment costs should be confirmed with HPE Aruba Networking for the organization’s region and intended configuration.
