What’s actually slowing this PC down?

On Windows desktop installations, winword.exe is the executable that starts Microsoft Word. A .docx file is a document Word opens—not the program itself. Clicking a document can appear to start Word because Windows launches or calls Word to open it.
What starts Microsoft Word?
Microsoft identifies winword.exe as Word’s startup command. The Start menu, an application shortcut, or a command-line invocation can all start Word by running that executable. As Microsoft puts it, “All startup methods essentially do the same thing: they run the app’s .exe file, even if you don’t actually type the command or even see it.” Microsoft Support: Command-line switches for Microsoft Office products.

How is the program different from a Word document?
winword.exe is the application executable. A .docx or other Word document contains content that the application opens. You can launch Word first and then select a recent document, browse to its location, or use File > Open. Alternatively, double-clicking a document can launch Word and open that document in one action. The document is the input; it does not become Word’s executable. Where is winword.exe installed?
Microsoft lists these common default Office16 locations for Microsoft 365, Office 2024, and Office 2021 on Windows:
| Windows installation context | Example default folder |
|---|---|
| 32-bit Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice16 |
| 64-bit Windows | C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficerootOffice16 |
These are examples for the default locations Microsoft documents, not guaranteed paths for every computer. Installation choices and configuration can differ, so verify the actual location on your machine rather than assuming one of these folders applies. Microsoft Support’s command-line switch guidance.

What can change what Word opens or loads at startup?
Some command-line switches change Word’s startup state or specify content and components to load. They do not make a document or template the application executable.
| Switch | Effect described by Microsoft | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
/n |
Starts a new instance of Word without a document. | Open a separate blank instance. |
/w |
Starts a new instance with a blank document. | Start Word ready for a new document. |
/t |
Starts Word with a document based on a specified template, or opens a file as described in Microsoft’s switch table. | Use a particular template or file at launch. |
/z |
Behaves visibly like /t but also generates both Startup and New events. |
A specialized template-start behavior. |
/a |
Prevents add-ins and global templates, including Normal, from loading automatically and locks settings files. | Isolate startup issues involving add-ins or global templates. |
/l |
Loads a named add-in. | Load a specific add-in. |
/m |
Prevents AutoExec macros from running. | Start Word without AutoExec macros. |
/mMacroName |
Starts Word and runs the named macro. | Run a particular macro at startup. |
/safe |
Starts Word in Safe Mode. | Troubleshoot startup behavior. |
/q |
Suppresses the splash screen. | Change the visible startup presentation. |
/r |
Re-registers Word. | Repair a registration-related issue. |
For example, a shortcut or command can invoke the installed executable with a switch, but the executable path must match the installation on that PC. Microsoft’s switch documentation describes the options and their behavior: Command-line switches for Microsoft Office products.

How do you open Word in Safe Mode?
- Open the Windows Run dialog or a command prompt.
- Enter the full path to the installed
WINWORD.EXE, followed by a space and/safe. For example, if Word is installed in the documented 64-bit default folder, use"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficerootOffice16WINWORD.EXE" /safe. - Press Enter. If the example path does not exist on your machine, use the actual
WINWORD.EXElocation instead.
Microsoft recommends the /a switch as another troubleshooting test when investigating whether add-ins or global templates are involved in a startup problem. It starts Word while preventing those components from loading automatically. Microsoft’s switch reference.
Can templates, add-ins, or macros start Word?
They can affect what Word loads or does after the application starts, but they are not substitutes for winword.exe. A template can provide the basis for a document; an add-in can be loaded by Word; and a macro can automate commands. Microsoft notes that macros can be stored in Normal.dotm for use in new documents. The /m switch can prevent AutoExec macros from running, while /mMacroName asks Word to run a named macro. Microsoft also cautions that templates can store macro viruses, so treat unexpected templates and macro-enabled files cautiously. Microsoft’s switch documentation; Microsoft Support: Create a macro in Word.

Why might a document open read-only or in Protected View?
Starting Word successfully does not guarantee that a document will be editable. Files from the Internet or other potentially unsafe locations may open in Protected View or read-only. Sharing permissions, document restrictions, or administrator policy can also prevent editing. Those conditions concern the file’s trust or access state, not which executable launches Word. Microsoft Support: What is Protected View?; Microsoft Support: Restrict changes to files in Word.
