Configure Keycloak sign-in for an AWS Application Load Balancer created by AWS Load Balancer Controller by attaching the controller’s ListenerRuleConfiguration to the Gateway API setup and using its authenticate action. This is an AWS controller extension—not a standard HTTPRoute OIDC field. You also need compatible Gateway API and controller versions, a publicly reachable Keycloak issuer, an HTTPS ALB listener, and a Kubernetes Secret containing the OIDC client credentials.
Confirm that your controller and CRDs support this route
The AWS Load Balancer Controller maps Gateway API Layer 7 HTTPRoute and GRPCRoute resources to ALBs; Layer 4 routes use NLBs. Its Gateway API guide identifies controller v2.14.0 or later for ALB Gateway API routes and says the implementation is built for Gateway API v1.6.0. The same guide lists v2.13.0 or later as an overall prerequisite, but that lower baseline is not the route-level ALB requirement.

| Component | What to check |
|---|---|
| AWS Load Balancer Controller | Use v2.14.0 or later for ALB Gateway API routes; confirm the exact release’s documentation and installed CRDs. |
| Gateway API | The controller guide describes its implementation as built for Gateway API v1.6.0. Check compatibility with your chosen controller release before installing or upgrading. |
| AWS Gateway API CRDs | Install the CRDs corresponding to the controller release you deploy; do not assume a moving development-branch manifest matches your controller. |
Install both the standard Gateway API resources and the AWS controller’s Gateway-specific resources. For an ALB Gateway, the required resource kinds include Gateway, GatewayClass, HTTPRoute, GRPCRoute, TargetGroupConfiguration, LoadBalancerConfiguration, and ListenerRuleConfiguration. Keep the controller version, standard CRDs, and AWS custom CRDs aligned.

Do not mix Layer 4 and Layer 7 protocols on one Gateway; the controller guide says that combination is unsupported. Check the release-specific Gateway API installation guide for the matching CRD installation steps rather than copying unpinned manifests.

Give the controller AWS permissions separately from Keycloak credentials
The controller needs AWS API permissions to create and reconcile load balancers and related resources. For EKS, its installation guidance recommends IAM Roles for Service Accounts (IRSA) as best practice; it also describes Pod Identity and node-role permissions. Avoid relying on node-role credentials when possible because those credentials may be available to other pods.
These infrastructure permissions are not the Keycloak client credentials. IRSA authorizes the controller to manage AWS resources. The OIDC client ID and secret authorize the ALB’s authentication integration with Keycloak and belong in a Kubernetes Secret referenced by the listener configuration.

Prepare Keycloak and the ALB’s public HTTPS endpoint
Get endpoint values from the realm
Use the OIDC discovery metadata for the Keycloak realm you will use. Take the issuer, authorization endpoint, token endpoint, and user-info endpoint from that realm’s published metadata; do not guess URL paths or derive them from another deployment. Ensure those endpoint URLs use the externally reachable Keycloak address that the ALB can resolve and contact.

Create an OIDC client in the intended Keycloak realm and obtain its client ID and secret. Configure the client’s allowed redirect URI according to AWS’s current ALB OIDC instructions for the ALB in your deployment. The callback value is specific to the ALB and AWS’s documented flow; do not substitute a generic application URL, localhost address, or an assumed callback.

ALB OIDC requires an HTTPS listener, and the identity provider’s DNS name must be publicly resolvable. An internal-only Keycloak hostname or an HTTP-only listener does not meet those stated prerequisites. Confirm the realm’s public URL, DNS, and client redirect configuration before debugging route reconciliation.
Attach OIDC authentication through ListenerRuleConfiguration
Define the controller extension resource ListenerRuleConfiguration and use its authenticate action to configure OIDC for the relevant ALB listener rule. The action’s schema includes issuer, authorizationEndpoint, tokenEndpoint, userInfoEndpoint, and a Secret reference. It also supports scope, additional authentication request parameters, unauthenticated behavior, cookie name, and session timeout.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Store the Keycloak client ID and secret in the referenced Kubernetes Secret using the clientID and clientSecret entries expected by the controller’s OIDC guidance. Do not put either credential in a public manifest, source repository, or a field intended for endpoint URLs. Check the installed CRD schema and release documentation for the exact resource structure, Secret reference syntax, and namespace requirements before applying a manifest.
Scope defaults to openid; the unauthenticated behavior defaults to authenticate; and the cookie name defaults to AWSELBAuthSessionCookie. The schema sets the default session timeout to 604800 seconds (seven days) and the maximum to 604800 seconds. These are schema defaults and limits, not a recommendation that every application use a seven-day session. Select a supported scope and timeout for your deployment, and verify them against the CRD version you installed.

Treat access to the Secret as a security boundary. AWS’s Ingress OIDC guidance warns that users able to create relevant routing resources in the same namespace can potentially create a path to use the Secret. That warning is documented for Ingress; verify the Gateway API release’s precise RBAC behavior rather than assuming the details are identical. Restrict who can create or modify the relevant Gateway API and AWS extension resources, and who can read the Secret.

- Apply prerequisites: install the version-matched standard Gateway API CRDs, AWS Gateway-specific CRDs, and controller with its AWS permissions.
- Create the authentication inputs: create the Keycloak OIDC client, confirm its public realm metadata and ALB redirect URI, and create the Kubernetes Secret with the client credentials.
- Configure routing: apply the Gateway, route, and
ListenerRuleConfigurationthat associates the OIDC authenticate action with the intended listener rule. Use the exact schema for the installed CRDs. - Check Kubernetes status: inspect Gateway and route status conditions for accepted and programmed state. The controller’s reconciliation documentation says Gateway status can report whether resources were accepted and programmed, along with provisioned load balancer DNS and ARN information.
- Inspect the ALB rule: confirm the listener rule has the authenticate action before forwarding traffic to the target.
- Test the browser flow: request the protected application without an authenticated session, follow the redirect to Keycloak, complete sign-in, and confirm the browser returns to the application. Check the expected session behavior and repeat with a fresh browser session if needed.
If a Gateway or route is not accepted or programmed, resolve its reported condition before treating the problem as an OIDC failure. If reconciliation succeeds but sign-in does not, check the listener action, public endpoint reachability, realm discovery values, Keycloak client redirect URI, and Secret reference. These checks describe an operator validation sequence; no live deployment or end-to-end test is implied.
