To get more product reviews, ask actual customers consistently, make it simple to leave honest feedback, and publish reviews transparently. These practices can help you build a fuller body of customer feedback, but the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) does not report a proven increase in review volume from these specific tactics. The goal is more genuine reviews—not a higher rating achieved by screening out unhappy customers.
1. Ask actual customers in a neutral, consistent way
Send a clear request to customers who have used or experienced the product. The FTC advises marketers not to solicit reviews from people who have not used or experienced what they are reviewing. See the FTC’s guide to soliciting and paying for online reviews.

Use the same basic approach across your customer base rather than choosing only people you expect to be pleased. The FTC has identified selectively asking customers in high-satisfaction regions as a problematic example. Asking only customers who report a positive experience to post publicly can similarly skew the picture shoppers see. The FTC discusses selective solicitation in its Endorsement Guides FAQ.
There is no universally established best channel or send time in the FTC materials cited here. Choose a practical, consistent point after delivery or use, and follow the rules of the platform where reviews will appear. Avoid repeated or intrusive requests.

Can you offer a discount for a review?
An incentive must not be expressly or implicitly tied to a positive rating or sentiment. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule prohibits incentives for five-star reviews, including reviews on third-party platforms; disclosing the incentive does not make a five-star condition acceptable. An incentive that is not sentiment-conditioned may still require a clear disclosure, and the review platform may ban incentives altogether. Check the FTC’s Rule questions and answers and the platform’s current policy before offering anything.
2. Make it easy to leave an honest review
Give customers a direct, uncomplicated route from your request to the relevant review form. Identify the product clearly and invite specific, useful feedback—for example, what the customer used it for, what worked, and what could be better. This is a practical way to reduce friction, not a tactic with a measured conversion lift established by the FTC sources.

Do not send customers through a satisfaction question that directs happy customers to a public review page while routing unhappy ones to private feedback. That kind of review gating can make the public review set misleading. You can still offer customer support or collect private feedback, but do not use those channels to prevent legitimate criticism from reaching the public review process.
3. Publish and manage reviews transparently
Show genuine positive and negative reviews, and do not present the collection in a way that gives shoppers a distorted impression. The FTC’s guide for platforms featuring online customer reviews advises publishing all genuine reviews rather than excluding negative ones, and warns that prominently featuring positive reviews can be misleading.

Moderation is not automatically improper. Businesses can take reasonable steps to identify fake reviews or remove content that violates clearly stated policies. Use a process grounded in those policies, rather than removing criticism simply because it is unfavorable. Where a reviewer has a material connection to the business or received an incentive, disclose it clearly when required. Explain relevant collection, rating, and display practices so customers can understand what they are seeing.
The FTC’s 2023 announcement of updated advertising guides emphasized the harms of deceptive reviews. Then-Chair Lina M. Khan said: “Fake reviews not only waste people’s time and money, but also pollute the marketplace and divert business away from honest competitors.” Read the FTC announcement.

What to check before choosing a review tool or platform
A review tool can help send requests, collect feedback, and manage display, but its features do not replace your responsibility for honest solicitation and publication. Compare options using these questions:

- How are requests triggered and sent, and can you apply a consistent process?
- Can genuine negative reviews appear alongside positive ones?
- How does the service flag suspicious reviews and explain moderation?
- Can it disclose incentives or other material connections where relevant?
- Can shoppers understand how ratings are calculated and displayed?
- Does it work with your store and the destination platform, including that platform’s review rules?
FTC guidance is U.S. federal guidance, not a substitute for checking the rules of each review platform or the laws that apply in other countries. The FTC also explains that businesses should not use contract terms to bar or penalize honest reviews in its Consumer Review Fairness Act guide.
