SIF vs Mutual Funds vs PMS: Which Investment Structure Fits Your Needs?

A practical India-focused comparison of mutual funds, SIFs and PMS, covering SEBI’s SIF rules, the ₹10 lakh aggregate threshold, liquidity, derivatives, costs and a document-by-document selection checklist.

There is no universally best choice among a conventional mutual fund, a Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) and Portfolio Management Services (PMS). The suitable structure depends on the mandate you want, the amount you can commit, how much liquidity you need, your tolerance for losses and complexity, and the quality of the specific scheme or provider. Labels alone are not enough.

SIFs sit within the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) mutual-fund regulatory framework but have distinct strategy and eligibility rules. The general entry threshold is ₹10 lakh in aggregate across an investor’s SIF strategies at PAN level, with an exception for accredited investors. Mutual funds have scheme-level terms, while PMS arrangements must be assessed provider by provider. Use the comparison and document checklist below before investing.

At a glance: how the three structures differ

Question Conventional mutual fund Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) Portfolio Management Services (PMS)
Regulatory setting A pooled mutual-fund scheme with its own mandate and offer documents. A strategy operating under SEBI’s mutual-fund framework, with SIF-specific rules and permitted strategy categories. A SEBI-regulated portfolio-management arrangement whose current requirements must be checked in primary documents.
Entry eligibility Check the particular scheme’s subscription rules. ₹10 lakh aggregate across all SIF strategies held at the investor’s PAN level. Accredited investors are exempt from this threshold. Regular mutual-fund investments at the same asset-management company do not count toward the SIF-only threshold. The current minimum was not established in the material available for this guide. Confirm the latest SEBI rules and the provider’s documents rather than relying on an old number.
Portfolio flexibility Bound by the scheme mandate, permitted instruments and risk disclosures. Defined equity-oriented, debt-oriented and hybrid strategy categories permit specified exposures. Ask the provider exactly what the mandate permits and whether any customization is available.
Derivatives and short exposure Read the scheme mandate and disclosures. Eligible exchange-traded derivatives may be used for limited unhedged exposure. The 2025 SEBI circular permits up to 25% of net assets for purposes other than hedging and portfolio rebalancing, subject to its conditions. Verify the individual mandate and current regulatory terms; do not infer permitted exposure from the PMS label.
Liquidity Confirm the scheme’s redemption terms, dealing days, notice requirements and any applicable restrictions. Redemption frequency is strategy-specific. The offer document may set notice periods or other conditions; daily liquidity must not be assumed. Confirm the provider’s dealing, withdrawal and notice terms in writing.
Costs Use the scheme’s current documents to identify every stated charge. Compare the strategy’s stated costs with its benchmark and permitted exposures. Obtain the current fee schedule and understand how every charge is calculated. No single PMS fee figure should be assumed.
Benchmark Use the scheme’s named benchmark and objective. Use the strategy’s stated benchmark and objective. Check the mandate’s benchmark or reference measure, if one is specified.
What to inspect first Mandate, benchmark, costs, risk, portfolio disclosures and redemption terms. Information Document, offer terms, threshold, exposures, derivatives language, benchmark, risk disclosures and redemption conditions. Provider mandate, account arrangement, fees, liquidity, reporting and current SEBI requirements.

This table is a due-diligence framework, not a claim that all products within a category have identical risk, cost, tax treatment or liquidity.

What exactly is a Specialized Investment Fund?

SEBI introduced the SIF framework through its mutual-fund regulations. It allows specified equity-oriented, debt-oriented and hybrid strategies that can have a different risk and exposure profile from a plain-vanilla scheme. The framework took effect on April 1, 2025, following SEBI’s February 27, 2025 circular on the regulatory framework for SIFs.

An SIF is therefore a regulatory structure, not a return promise. A strategy can be more complex, use a wider set of permitted exposures or offer a different dealing schedule without being more likely to make money. The result still depends on the portfolio, implementation, costs, market conditions and the investor’s ability to tolerate losses.

The ₹10 lakh threshold and how aggregation works

For a non-accredited investor, the general threshold is ₹10 lakh in aggregate across SIF strategies at the investor’s PAN level. It is not a separate ₹10 lakh minimum for every strategy. For example, ₹6 lakh in one SIF strategy and ₹4 lakh in another would reach the aggregate threshold, subject to the products’ own subscription rules.

Regular mutual-fund holdings with the same asset-management company do not count toward this SIF-only threshold. Conversely, switching from one SIF strategy to another does not make the threshold a per-strategy test: the relevant question is the aggregate SIF investment recorded at PAN level under the applicable rules.

SEBI’s circular exempts accredited investors from the general threshold. Accreditation does not remove the need to read the strategy documents, understand liquidity restrictions or assess loss capacity.

Permitted exposures and the 25% derivative limit

SIF strategy categories define the exposures a strategy may take. One important rule is that eligible exchange-traded derivatives can be used for limited unhedged exposure. The 2025 SEBI circular permits unhedged exposure of up to 25% of net assets for purposes other than hedging and portfolio rebalancing, subject to the circular’s conditions.

That figure is a regulatory ceiling for the specified use; it is not a statement that every SIF will use derivatives, reach the limit or produce a particular return. Before subscribing, identify whether the strategy actually uses derivatives, why it uses them, how losses are controlled and where the exposure is disclosed.

Liquidity is decided by the strategy, not the SIF label

SEBI permits SIF subscription and redemption frequency to reflect the investment strategy and requires the offer document to disclose the terms. One SIF may have a different dealing schedule from another. Check the exact frequency, cut-off or notice requirements, settlement timing, gates or other restrictions in the strategy’s documents. If the money may be needed on a known date, match that date against the documented redemption process rather than assuming daily liquidity.

Documents that establish what an SIF does

Start with the strategy’s Information Document and offer terms. They should let you answer:

  • What is the investment objective and permitted asset mix?
  • Which instruments and exposures are allowed, including any derivative or unhedged language?
  • What benchmark is used, and how is performance expected to be compared?
  • What are the principal risks, concentration limits and risk-o-meter information?
  • What are the subscription, redemption and notice terms?
  • What costs are disclosed, and how often are portfolio and performance details reported?

SEBI published formats for SIF Application and Investment Strategy Information Documents (ISID) on April 11, 2025. AMFI’s SIF Investor Corner, checked on October 13, 2026, is a useful place to locate investor information, portfolio disclosures, annual reports and monthly fact sheets. Treat the strategy’s current documents as controlling if a summary page and the offer terms differ.

How conventional mutual funds fit into the comparison

A conventional mutual fund gives you exposure to a pooled scheme whose investments are governed by that scheme’s stated objective and mandate. The category name is only a starting point: two schemes with similar labels can have different benchmarks, permitted instruments, concentration limits, risk levels and costs.

Read the mandate before comparing returns

Identify the scheme’s objective, asset allocation range, benchmark and risk disclosures. Then check whether the actual portfolio is consistent with those terms. A return number without its benchmark, time period and risk context cannot tell you whether the scheme fits your needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the scheme’s dealing and redemption terms

Do not generalize liquidity from “mutual fund” to every scheme. Confirm dealing days, cut-off rules, settlement timing, exit conditions and any scheme-specific restrictions. The practical test is whether the documented process can meet your cash-flow needs, including during stressed markets.

Compare the complete cost picture

Use the latest scheme documents to identify all stated charges and compare them with the service and mandate you are receiving. Compare like with like: a narrowly defined strategy and a broad diversified scheme should not be judged only by a single headline cost or a short-term return.

How PMS differs from pooled funds and SIFs

PMS is a portfolio-management arrangement in which the investor engages a provider under a specific mandate and account structure. The practical details can vary materially between providers, so the PMS label does not answer questions about customization, custody or holdings, fees, liquidity or permitted instruments.

Verify the mandate and account arrangement

Ask for the current written mandate and determine who makes investment decisions, what restrictions apply, how positions are recorded and how statements are delivered. Ask whether the service is discretionary or non-discretionary if the provider offers both, and understand what authority you are granting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rely on an outdated PMS minimum

The current PMS threshold was not independently established for this comparison. Before acting, confirm the latest eligibility requirement directly against current SEBI rules and the provider’s documents. The same caution applies to fees: obtain the current schedule and ask how fixed, variable or transaction-related charges are calculated.

Test liquidity and reporting in advance

Obtain the withdrawal, notice and settlement terms in writing. Review the sample reporting format, valuation frequency, portfolio statements and risk reporting. A service that can tailor a mandate may still be unsuitable if its liquidity process or reporting does not match your needs.

Compare the structures on the questions that matter

1. Can you meet the entry requirement without weakening your finances?

If you cannot meet the ₹10 lakh aggregate SIF threshold and are not an accredited investor, an SIF is not available to you under the general rule. Do not borrow, liquidate an emergency reserve or concentrate assets merely to cross a threshold. For mutual funds, check the specific scheme’s subscription terms. For PMS, verify the current requirement rather than using a remembered figure.

2. Is the strategy understandable enough to monitor?

You should be able to explain the objective, benchmark, main exposures, loss scenarios and exit process in your own words. If you cannot, pause and request clarification. Complexity is not a substitute for suitability.

3. How much liquidity can you actually give up?

Map planned withdrawals, emergency reserves and liabilities against the documented redemption or withdrawal schedule. SIF frequency varies by strategy; mutual-fund terms are scheme-specific; PMS terms are provider-specific. A lower expected need for cash does not justify ignoring notice periods or dealing restrictions.

4. What risks are you accepting?

Read the risk disclosures for concentration, credit, interest-rate, equity, derivative, liquidity and operational risks that apply to the product. For an SIF, pay particular attention to whether eligible derivatives can create unhedged exposure and how the strategy manages it. For PMS, ask how the mandate controls concentration and whether changes require your approval.

5. Is the benchmark an appropriate yardstick?

Compare a strategy with its own stated benchmark and objective, over consistent periods and after the stated costs where the documents provide that information. Do not use a popular market index as a substitute for the product’s designated benchmark.

6. Have you separated facts from performance marketing?

No performance statistic from an original publisher was established for this comparison. Past or projected returns should not be treated as evidence that one structure will outperform another. Focus first on mandate, risk, liquidity, eligibility and costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Have you checked tax advice separately?

A current, product-by-product tax comparison was not established here. Tax outcomes can depend on the instrument, transaction, holding pattern and the investor’s circumstances. Obtain current tax advice before acting, and do not infer tax treatment from the structure’s name.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the job for the money. Write down the objective, time horizon, required liquidity and maximum loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan.
  2. Set an eligibility screen. Check the scheme’s subscription rules, the SIF ₹10 lakh PAN-level aggregate rule and accredited-investor exception where relevant, and the current PMS requirement from primary documents.
  3. Collect the controlling documents. Use the mutual-fund scheme documents, the SIF Information Document and offer terms, or the PMS mandate and provider agreement. Do not make a decision from a presentation alone.
  4. Build an exposure map. List asset classes, concentration limits, derivatives, short exposure, leverage language and any restrictions. For an SIF, verify whether the 25% unhedged derivative ceiling is relevant to the strategy’s actual design.
  5. Stress-test liquidity. Write down when you may need the money and compare those dates with redemption or withdrawal frequency, notice periods, settlement and any restrictions.
  6. Calculate the full stated cost. Record every disclosed charge and the basis on which it is calculated. Compare products with similar mandates rather than comparing labels.
  7. Check monitoring and reporting. Confirm the benchmark, portfolio disclosure schedule, annual reports, fact sheets, risk-o-meter information and the process for receiving updates.
  8. Document unanswered questions. Ask the fund house or PMS provider for written answers. If a material term remains unclear, treat that uncertainty as a reason to wait.
  9. Review after investing. Monitor whether the portfolio still follows its mandate, whether liquidity remains acceptable and whether your own financial circumstances have changed.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating ₹10 lakh as a per-strategy SIF minimum

The general SIF threshold is aggregate across SIF strategies at PAN level, not a separate ₹10 lakh ticket for every strategy. Confirm how the investment is recorded before assuming that adding a second strategy creates another threshold.

Mistake: counting ordinary mutual funds toward the SIF threshold

Regular mutual-fund investments at the same asset-management company do not count toward the SIF-only threshold. Keep the categories separate when checking eligibility.

Mistake: assuming every SIF is daily-liquid

Redemption frequency follows the strategy’s disclosed terms. Read the offer document, including notice periods, before committing money that may be needed quickly.

Mistake: turning a regulatory limit into a return forecast

The 25% unhedged derivative limit describes permitted exposure under specified conditions. It says nothing about whether a strategy will use the full amount or what return it will produce.

Mistake: selecting by label instead of mandate

“Mutual fund,” “SIF” and “PMS” are starting points for research. The actual objective, benchmark, exposures, costs, liquidity and reporting terms determine the investor experience.

Mistake: quoting an old PMS minimum or fee

Eligibility and fee details can change. Use current SEBI and provider documents, and record the date of the terms you reviewed.

Mistake: ignoring the benchmark and risk disclosures

A product can appear attractive in isolation while taking risks that do not fit your plan. Read the benchmark and risk sections alongside the objective and portfolio disclosures.

Where to verify information

For SIF rules, consult SEBI’s “Regulatory framework for Specialized Investment Funds (‘SIF’)” circular dated February 27, 2025, which took effect April 1, 2025. SEBI’s April 9, 2025 clarification confirms the subsequent notice, while the April 11, 2025 ISID-format document explains the information-document framework.

For investor-facing SIF material, AMFI’s SIF Investor Corner provides access to portfolio disclosures, annual reports, monthly fact sheets and risk-o-meter information. Check the current version and date of every document.

For a mutual fund, the scheme’s current offer and disclosure documents are the primary reference. For PMS, use current SEBI requirements and the provider’s written mandate, fee schedule, account terms and reporting examples. If a numeric threshold or fee is not present in a current primary document, do not repeat it as fact.

Bottom line

Choose the structure whose documented mandate, eligibility, risk and liquidity fit your circumstances—not the structure with the most sophisticated name. A conventional mutual fund may be the straightforward route when its scheme terms match your needs. An SIF adds a ₹10 lakh aggregate PAN-level threshold for most investors, defined strategy categories and potentially more complex exposures, including permitted unhedged derivative exposure subject to SEBI’s rules. PMS requires especially careful provider-level checks because its current threshold, fees, account arrangement and liquidity terms must be verified from current documents.
