Choose The Island if your server is for beginners. Pick Ragnarok for the most land and a Norse-themed world, Valguero for dense biomes with short travel, Aberration or Scorched Earth for deliberately harsh survival, and Extinction if your priority is late-game PvE. The Center is a free alternative to The Island. Paid maps and reported future releases require a storefront check because prices, launch dates and roadmap details come from secondary sources and sometimes conflict.

The best map for each type of server

The Island: the safest first server

The Island is the default recommendation for new players. It is described as a mid-sized single landmass with satellite islands, relatively short travel and areas that are walkable early in progression. Those characteristics reduce the amount of navigation and logistics a new tribe must solve at once. A private server used for learning taming, building, exploration and basic progression has the clearest starting point here.

Choose The Island when your player group has mixed experience, when you expect people to join without preparation, or when you want a compact world that is easier to understand before moving to a larger or more specialized map. It is also the least complicated choice if you do not yet know whether your community prefers long-distance exploration or concentrated bases.

#1 Best Overall
ARK: Survival Ascended - PlayStation 5
  • ARK: Survival Ascended has completely recreated and redesigned the artwork and worlds of ARK to take advantage of the latest in videogame technology, Unreal Engine 5, using high-end graphics features such as fully dynamic Global Illumination (“Lumen”), so that light bounces realistically of off surfaces and provides realistic reflections, and advanced mesh streaming (“Nanite”) of hundreds of millions of triangles for extreme detail.
  • Advanced new physics systems such as dynamic water so that every creature creates waves, ripples, splashes, and bubbles as they move through fluids, and fully interactive physical foliage where every blade of grass, bush, and tree reacts to characters, explosions, projectiles, and physics objects.
  • ARK: Survival Ascended includes access to all of ARK’s worlds, including Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, ARK Genesis Part 1, ARK Genesis Part 2, and more. The Island is released now, with the subsequent expansion worlds to be added at no additional cost on a regular basis.
  • Thorough Quality of Life revamps in every area: redesigned User Interfaces, dynamic navigation for intelligent creature pathfinding, Wild Babies, Photo Mode, new Camera systems, new Map system, Tracking System, new Structures and Items, new Creatures, and much more.
  • Cross-Platform Modding: Download & play new custom content created by players, including new maps, creatures, items, and game modes, through a dedicated new Mod-bowser directly within the game! Enjoy an endless stream of new ARK content as the creativity and talent of the community is fully unleashed for the first time ever across gaming platforms!

Ragnarok: maximum room and long-range exploration

Ragnarok is reported at roughly 2.5 times The Island’s land area and uses Norse theming. Its scale makes it the strongest choice among the listed maps for a server where distance, territory and extended expeditions are central to the experience. The larger footprint also means that a small group may feel more spread out than it would on The Island.

Several guides call Ragnarok the usual second server. That label is not a published population measurement, but it signals a familiar progression path for players who have outgrown a starter map. If your recruitment pitch emphasizes a large world and you want a map many ARK players already recognize, Ragnarok is the practical default. Confirm the current build and availability for your platform before committing.

Valguero: variety without excessive travel

Valguero is reported at about 63 square kilometres and is described as dense rather than sprawling, with its biomes close together. That combination suits a server whose players want environmental variety but do not want every resource run or meeting to become a long expedition. It is a useful middle ground between The Island’s compact learning curve and Ragnarok’s much larger land area.

Select Valguero when your group values changing scenery and nearby biome transitions, or when your server population is too small to make a very large map feel active. The reported area is approximate and comes from secondary coverage, so treat it as a scale guide rather than a precise technical specification.

The Center: a free island-hopping alternative

The Center is free and mid-sized, but its land is divided into islands separated by water. That layout changes how players plan bases and travel: a group that enjoys crossings and separated territories may prefer it, while a beginner looking for straightforward overland movement may find The Island easier.

ARK: Survival Ascended - Compatible for PS5 - UK PAL
  • Brand new UK Import PAL version. Game in English. UK PSN store account required to use any online features

Choose The Center if purchase cost is decisive and your players specifically want an archipelago-style layout. Because it is free, it is also a low-risk second server for a community that wants to test a different geography without buying an expansion.

Scorched Earth: survival pressure from the environment

Scorched Earth is a desert map where water scarcity and heat are the defining pressures reported by the guides. That makes it a poor default for a completely new group but a strong deliberate choice for players who want the environment itself to be a major opponent.

Use Scorched Earth for a challenge server, a seasonal reset or a veteran community that finds a gentler opening uninteresting. Explain the heat and water expectations in your server rules and onboarding message so newcomers understand that difficulty is part of the map selection, not a server malfunction.

Aberration: a hard underground start

Aberration is an underground map rated hard for new players. Its identity is therefore less about broad, easy travel and more about learning to survive in a constrained and demanding world. It is best reserved for an experienced group or for a server whose stated purpose is high difficulty.

Do not use Aberration as an accidental “first map” simply because the name is available in the map menu. If you are recruiting beginners, make The Island or The Center the onboarding world and reserve Aberration for an optional veteran server.

Studio Wildcard ARK: Survival Ascended (PlayStation 5)
  • Ark graphics and worlds are completely recreated and designed to use the latest video game technology, Unreal Engine 5
  • Advanced new physical systems such as dynamic water and fully interactive physical leaves
  • Design your survivor, shape the trunk and tame, train, multiply and ride dinosaurs in a vivid ecosystem
  • Public online mode for up to 70 players, private multiplayer mode for up to 8 players + local split screen for 2 players

Extinction: an endgame PvE-oriented choice

Extinction is set on a ruined Earth and includes Titans. One guide specifically names it as an endgame PvE pick. That recommendation makes it the clearest choice when the server’s purpose is advanced cooperative progression rather than teaching the fundamentals.

The endgame label is a guide’s assessment, not a universal rule. Use Extinction when your community already understands the game and wants its central theme and Titan encounters to define the server. For a new wipe with inexperienced players, the ruined-world setting and advanced focus can create a steep first session.

Paid maps and newer content

Astraeos

Astraeos is listed as a paid expansion at $14.99 by a secondary source. No definitive storefront price, regional currency treatment, platform availability or complete map description was published. Treat $14.99 as a listing to verify, not a guaranteed universal price.

Before announcing Astraeos as the basis of a paid server, check the official storefront for your platform and confirm that every intended player owns the required content. A map that only the host owns may still create access or joining problems depending on the edition and server configuration.

Lost Colony

Lost Colony is listed at $29.99 by a secondary source, but that figure also requires storefront verification. The available material does not establish a complete world profile, a regional price or a final platform matrix. It should therefore be treated as a purchase decision, not as a map whose features can be promised in a server advertisement.

Genesis Part 1

Sources report that Genesis Part 1, also called “Genesis Ascended Part 1” in some coverage, released in early July 2026. The reported day conflicts: sources cite 2 July, 3 July or 4 July. Transfers were listed to open on 4 September 2026. Because the day disagreement is unresolved, describe it as an early-July release unless you have checked the current official listing for your platform.

If your server depends on transfers, distinguish the content release from the transfer-opening date. A map can be available while transfer rules remain closed or different from what players expect. Verify the current transfer policy before promising an inter-map progression plan.

Dragontopia

Dragontopia is described as a paid expansion, with an Expansion Pass listed at $29.99 in secondary coverage. Day-one dragons were reported as live, while one fan site listed a full map-wide skyworld rollout for 9 December 2026. Earlier roadmaps gave only a late-2026 window.

Those reports do not establish a single reliable launch schedule. If you are planning a Dragontopia server, use “date to be confirmed” in public scheduling until the official storefront or Studio Wildcard channels show the release state you need. Do not charge players or promise a full skyworld on the basis of the fan-site date alone.

Maps with unresolved or future dates

Fjordur

Fjordur has no settled release date in the available reporting. Claims range from December 2026 to an unspecified target date, with other reports placing it in 2027 or later. Older October 2025 dates are out of date and should not be reused in a current server calendar.

Plan a Fjordur community as a waitlist rather than a scheduled launch. Keep your existing server on a confirmed map and announce a migration only after the official date, price and ownership requirements are visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Genesis Part 2

Genesis Part 2 is also unconfirmed. One source lists Q2 2027; another estimates around November 2026 by spacing releases. Neither is confirmed. The disagreement is too large for a dependable wipe date, paid reservation or transfer promise.

Crystal Isles and Atlantis

Crystal Isles is described as a free remaster with no firm date. Atlantis is listed as TBA, with no confirmed launch information. Neither should be the sole foundation of a time-sensitive server plan. Use an available map now and treat these as future possibilities.

A practical method for choosing your server map

  1. Define your players’ experience. For first-timers, start with The Island. If everyone is experienced and explicitly wants harsh survival, shortlist Aberration or Scorched Earth. If the group wants advanced PvE, evaluate Extinction.
  2. Set the travel expectation. Choose Ragnarok when a very large world and long-distance exploration are the attraction. Choose Valguero when you want nearby biome variety. Choose The Island or The Center when you prefer a more manageable footprint.
  3. Set the purchase ceiling. The Island and The Center are identified as free. Astraeos and Lost Colony have reported prices of $14.99 and $29.99 respectively, but those amounts come from secondary listings. Genesis content and other paid expansions require an official storefront check.
  4. Decide whether geography is the challenge. Scorched Earth makes heat and water central. Aberration makes an underground, difficult start central. The Center makes water-separated islands central. Do not pick a map whose defining pressure conflicts with your community’s stated goal.
  5. Account for community familiarity. Guides frequently identify Ragnarok as the common second server. That may help recruitment because players recognize the choice, but no verified population statistics were available. Advertise your actual rules and schedule rather than promising a specific player count.
  6. Confirm availability before paying. Check the official storefront and current Studio Wildcard channels for price, edition, platform, release state and transfer rules. Secondary guides disagree on several dates and prices.
  7. Write the map choice into the server description. State the map, difficulty intent, travel scale, whether it is free or paid, and any transfer restrictions. This prevents a beginner from joining Aberration expecting an easy tutorial or a player from joining Ragnarok expecting a compact world.

Recommended server scenarios

Server goal Recommended map Why it fits Watch for
Learning community The Island Walkable early areas, short travel and a mid-sized single landmass Players may later want a larger world
Free alternative with island geography The Center No purchase cost reported; separated islands create a distinct layout Water crossings become part of routine travel
Large exploration server Ragnarok About 2.5 times The Island’s land area and Norse theming Small groups can feel dispersed
Dense variety Valguero Reported 63-square-kilometre area with biomes close together The area figure is approximate and secondary
Environmental challenge Scorched Earth Heat and water scarcity drive the survival loop New players may find the opening punishing
Hardcore underground survival Aberration Rated hard for new players and built around an underground setting Requires an experienced audience
Advanced cooperative PvE Extinction Ruined-Earth setting and Titans; named as an endgame PvE pick by one guide Not the simplest teaching map
Future-content community Wait for a confirmed map date Avoids promising access to Dragontopia, Fjordur, Genesis Part 2, Crystal Isles or Atlantis before status is verified Roadmap windows and prices can change

Common planning mistakes

Treating a reported date as a guarantee

Genesis Part 1 demonstrates the problem: the month is consistent in the reports, but the day is not. Fjordur and Genesis Part 2 have much wider disagreements, and Dragontopia has both a late-2026 window and a specific fan-site rollout date. Use confirmed storefront information for launch announcements.

Ignoring the difference between map access and transfer access

Genesis Part 1 was reported as released in early July, while transfers were listed to open on 4 September 2026. Keep those milestones separate in your server rules and migration calendar.

Assuming a secondary price applies everywhere

The $14.99 Astraeos listing, $29.99 Lost Colony listing and $29.99 Dragontopia Expansion Pass listing are not established as universal prices. Currency, platform, bundle and regional taxes can change what a player sees. Ask every participant to verify the purchase in the storefront they actually use.

Choosing by hype instead of server purpose

A paid or future map is not automatically better for a beginner. Match the map to experience, travel scale, environmental difficulty and endgame goals first; only then evaluate cost and release status.

Bottom-line decision

For a server you can launch with the fewest assumptions, choose The Island. Move to Ragnarok when scale is the point, Valguero when compact variety is the point, The Center when a free island-separated world is the point, Scorched Earth or Aberration when hardship is intentional, and Extinction when experienced players want an endgame PvE setting. Treat Astraeos, Lost Colony and Genesis content as storefront-dependent purchases, and do not schedule Dragontopia, Fjordur, Genesis Part 2, Crystal Isles or Atlantis until their official availability is confirmed.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
