Yes—you can still install Android apps from outside Google Play. For a regular APK on Android 8.0 or later, allow the specific browser or file manager opening it to install unknown apps. Google’s newer advanced flow for apps from unverified developers adds a one-time setup and 24-hour security delay, but it does not end sideloading. The steps and warnings depend on your Android version, installation route and, for the 2026 verification rollout, your country and app store.
Install an APK using Android’s standard flow
On Android 8.0 and later, there is no single system-wide “Unknown sources” switch. Instead, grant permission to the app that will open the APK—often your browser or file manager. Menu names can vary by phone maker, so use Settings search if the path below does not match your device.

- Download the APK from a source you have independently checked. Be cautious of unsolicited links or instructions to install an app.
- Open Settings and search for Install unknown apps. On many phones, you can also find it under Apps or Security.
- Select the app you will use to open the APK, such as your browser or file manager, then enable Allow from this source or the equivalent setting.
- Open the downloaded APK and review Android’s warning. Continue only if you trust both the app and its source.
- After installation, consider turning off that source’s permission if you no longer need it.
On Android 7.1.1 and earlier, the older process used a system setting called Unknown sources. The exact location depends on the device software. Use Google’s advanced flow for an unverified developer
Google’s advanced flow is intended for installing apps from developers who have not completed its verification process. It adds safeguards and a delay; it does not make an app safe or verify that the developer is trustworthy.

- Turn on Android Developer options.
- Go to Settings > System > Developer options.
- Turn on Allow apps from unverified developers.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Google’s FAQ says the setup includes confirming that nobody is coaching you, restarting the phone and reauthenticating, then waiting 24 hours.
- After the wait, return to confirm with biometrics or your device PIN. Choose whether to keep the advanced flow enabled for seven days or indefinitely.
- When installing the app, read the remaining unverified-developer warning. Choose Install anyway only after independently checking the app and its source.
Developer options do not need to remain enabled after the advanced flow has been set up. Google says ADB installations are not subject to the 24-hour wait. See the Android developer verification FAQ for the safeguard sequence and ADB clarification.
What Google’s 2026 verification changes mean
Google’s developer verification program links apps to verified developers. Its advanced flow is the user path Google describes for installing apps from unverified developers with added safeguards. The change adds friction and warnings; it is not a worldwide ban on installing apps outside Google Play.

The initial enforcement phase is scheduled to begin on September 30, 2026 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, on certified Android devices running Android 7 or later. Google says the initial scope covers these participating stores:

For that initial phase, Google says direct sideloading and stores not on the participating list are not covered by the initial enforcement. Its materials say unregistered apps can still be installed through ADB or the advanced flow. Google plans broader global expansion in 2027 and beyond, but rollout dates and scope can change. In practice, whether the initial protections apply depends on several factors together:
- Country: Is the device being used in one of the four initial countries?
- Device: Is it a certified Android device running Android 7 or later?
- Store: Is the installation coming through one of the participating stores?
- Developer and route: Is the developer verified, and is the app being installed from a store, directly as an APK, or using ADB?
Do not assume every country, store or sideload is already affected in the same way. Google’s March 30, 2026 announcement quotes Matthew Forsythe, Director of Product Management at Google: “We’re committed to an Android that is both open and safe.” Read the Android Developers announcement for Google’s explanation of the program.

Check an app before installing it
Permission to install an app is not evidence that the app is safe. Google recommends installing apps from verified developers. Treat pressure to install as a warning sign: if someone claiming to represent a bank, support service or delivery company tells you to bypass a warning, stop and contact the organization through its official website or a phone number you have independently verified. Do not follow instructions from an unsolicited caller or message.
