You normally do not need to download a separate driver. The operating system still uses a driver internally; “no driver needed” means no manual driver installation is usually required.
What a keyboard driver does—and when you need one
A driver lets the operating system communicate with hardware. Common keyboards use the Human Interface Device (HID) standard, which lets operating systems provide general support for input devices. That built-in support is enough for ordinary key input on most standard keyboards.

Microsoft Learn says, “Vendor drivers aren’t required for keyboards and mice that are compliant with the supported HID Usages and top level collections.” Microsoft’s keyboard and mouse HID documentation explains the qualification: the device must comply with the HID usages and collections Windows supports.

So the practical answer depends on what you mean by “need a driver”: the computer uses driver software, but you generally do not have to locate and install a separate package for basic typing.

Built-in keyboard support by operating system
Windows
Windows includes HID support and system-supplied keyboard mapper drivers. For USB keyboards, Windows Plug and Play enumerates the device and looks for matching identifiers; Microsoft documents an in-box HID-over-USB driver for Windows client editions. In ordinary use, a standards-compliant USB keyboard should therefore work without a manually installed keyboard driver.

macOS
Apple says it provides drivers and services for common HID types, including keyboards. This supports the general expectation that a standard keyboard needs no separate manufacturer driver for basic typing. For a particular model’s extra controls or software, follow the keyboard maker’s current setup instructions; Apple’s cited page is developer documentation, not a consumer compatibility list.

Apple’s DriverKit documentation
Linux
The Linux kernel’s input documentation describes automatic USB HID detection and generic handling for USB keyboards. Its HID transport documentation lists USB and Bluetooth as supported transports. A standard, compliant keyboard generally uses the operating system’s HID and input support; an unusual or nonconforming device may need device-specific handling.

Basic typing is different from model-specific features
A keyboard can type normally while an optional feature—such as a special control or configurable behavior—does not work as expected. That does not automatically mean the basic keyboard driver is missing. A manufacturer utility may provide configuration or proprietary features beyond ordinary key input, but not every keyboard has downloadable software, and the need for it varies by model, feature, and operating system.
HID devices can send input and output reports, including reports associated with keyboard LEDs; manufacturers can also add functionality. These possibilities do not prove that a particular feature requires an extra driver. Check the official support page or manual for the exact keyboard model and your operating system version. Install model-specific software only if the manufacturer identifies it as necessary for the feature you want.

Keyboard layout settings are also separate from a hardware driver: selecting a layout changes how the operating system interprets keys, rather than installing device support.

Check the connection and power before searching for a driver. The steps below are general checks, not guaranteed fixes.

- Check the connection. For a USB keyboard, reconnect it and try another USB port. If it is connected through a hub, connect it directly to the computer if practical.
- Check detection. Restart the computer and see whether the operating system detects the keyboard.
- Isolate the source. Test the keyboard on another computer, or try a known-working keyboard on this computer. This can help distinguish a keyboard problem from an issue with the computer or port.
- Look up the exact model. If the keyboard is detected and basic typing works but a special control does not, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for that model and your operating system version.
A standard keyboard usually does not call for a driver download when it fails to connect. Avoid unofficial driver-download sites and third-party driver-updater utilities as a default fix; first establish whether the keyboard is connected, powered, and detected.
