To use a song as a Samsung Galaxy ringtone, first save it as a music file on the phone, then choose it in Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone. A track available only inside a streaming app is not a selectable ringtone file.
What you need before setting a song as a ringtone
- A local audio file: Samsung says streaming-service tracks cannot be set directly as ringtones. Download or transfer an ordinary music file to your Galaxy phone. Samsung’s UK guide explains this distinction and notes that music can be loaded through Samsung Music or from a Windows PC: Samsung UK’s ringtone guide.
- A supported format: Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC. Its guide says M4A files need to be converted to one of those formats. Confirm details for your region and Galaxy model if a file still will not appear.
- Permission to use the file: Use a song file you are entitled to download and use as a ringtone. Check the provider’s current terms; Samsung’s guidance does not establish the license for a specific recording or purchase.
An offline download inside a streaming app is still a streaming-service track, not necessarily a music file the ringtone picker can access. Samsung explicitly says tracks played through streaming services cannot be selected directly.

How to get the music file onto your Galaxy phone
Obtain a downloadable audio file from a source that permits the intended use, or transfer a music file you already have. Samsung UK identifies Samsung Music and transfer from a Windows PC as ways to load music. The file must be saved on the phone before you open the ringtone settings; a streaming app’s in-app download does not meet that requirement.
Set the song as your general ringtone
- Open Settings and tap Sounds and vibration.
- Tap Ringtone. If prompted, choose SIM 1 or SIM 2; a single-SIM device may show only one option.
- Tap the + icon to add a music file.
- Select the song stored on your phone. If it is not listed under Tracks, look under Folders or use search in the picker.
- Tap Done.
These are the steps in Samsung UK’s guide, updated 5 June 2026. Menu names can differ by Galaxy model and software version; Samsung New Zealand’s earlier guide uses “Sound and vibration” and notes that screens and menus may vary: Samsung New Zealand’s ringtone guide.

- Open the contact’s information or edit controls, then choose View more and Ringtone.
- Select a built-in tone or tap + to choose a music file, then tap Done.
- Return to the contact screen and tap Save.
Samsung cautions that the ringtone control may depend on the phone and operating system. The contact may need to be saved on the device for the option to appear.
Choose a song segment, if your phone offers it
Some Galaxy ringtone pickers include Play selected highlights only. When enabled, the phone plays a selected portion of the song; when disabled, playback starts at the beginning. Samsung New Zealand describes this control, but it is not available on every model or software version.
